This happened a while back, but I have a pal thats a conductor up in IL and he told me that some of the Amtrak passenger trains were not activating signals. But all of the trains had the ugly P32/42 engines in the lead. Something had to do with the cab electronics. Also the speed had a part in it. Signals thats timed for 50mph would not activate properly with a train moving at 79mph. What I mean by signals are the grade crossing gates and lights. I wonder how did the BNSF deal with this. Now this might have been a rumor but he just passed it on to me. Did anyone else hear this.

RE: BNSF Problem With Amtrak

Yes that would be scarry. A woman was arguing with her husband on the cell phone and didnt pay any attention to the gates and drove right through the gates and got t-boned by the Texas Eagle at 76mph.
That was sad. But they said the gates were a little slow coming down because they were not timed for that speed. Family tried to sue because of that, but to no luck at all.

RE: BNSF Problem With Amtrak

I can tell you right now..if the crossing protection is not set for 20 seconds of warning time minimum, then BNSF IS in violation of the FRA rules and regs set forth for grade crossing protection. If those signals are not giving the proper warning time..then someone is in (or will soon be)deep dodo. (I was a signal maintainer in another life...a bad life I might add)Someone is going to get killed because of this. The first thing BNSF needs to address is a speed order throught ALL those crossings where the minimum warning time is not set...this MUST be done ASAP. ...got to slow those trains down. Then it is a matter if going out and digging up the "cans" and moving them out to a distance where the warning time is sufficiant (more than 20 seconds)Also re-adjusting the motion sensor equipment to read out to the new distance. (I'm sure BNSF is using MS2000/3000 equipment)Keep us posted..I'd like to hear the outcome of this one...P.

RE: BNSF Problem With Amtrak

Really a train has no buisness going over 70mph over public grade crossings, passenger or not. Want to get there in a hurry, fly. It makes no sense for Amtrak to haul ass up and down the rails at 80mph.
Speed is part of the reason a Amtrak derailment is usually fatal. And some of the track conditions they run on (especially here in Arkansas), and if I were a engineer, Id be scared to do 75+mph. But I will keep it updated as I learn about it.

RE: BNSF Problem With Amtrak

Paul is correct.Signal timing is as important as track condition when setting speed limits. We set up the crossings on the NYSW west of Butler,NJ for 60mph passenger.NJT was,and still is,talking about commuter service on the NYSW so we built the crossings with that in m ind. With the Harmon crossing processors, you always got the same warning time,50mph or 10mph.
