Sep-28-01, 03:47 AM (EST) "BNSF Merger" Ok, I know this is off topic, but does anybody know why the BN Merged the the SF? I'm a big Burlington Northern fan...mostly because of my grandpa who was an engineer for the CB&Q and then after the merger for BN. He retired in 1981, he took me to the railroad yards in Alliance Nebraska quite often. When i was 5 he took me and 2 of my cousins and my dad to an area just outside of town where a coal train was sitting. On the front were 4 or 5 GE C30-7's and we got to go into the cab and i got to blow the horn. it was absolutly AWESOME!!! Anyway i was really disappointed when i first saw those ugly orange diesels after the merger, and i never got the full story of why the two mergedJust CuriousJoel Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-28-01, 09:12 AM (EST) 1. "RE: BNSF Merger" A lot of guys with MBAs convinced the folks that run both lines that they could make more money if they closed all the branch lines and just ran 1 or 2 LONG lines across the country. They don't understand that eventually, they have limited the places freight can go so much, that the business is gone as well, along with the nostalgia of railroading. We are left with too many trucks, not enough trains.

Sep-29-01, 01:37 AM (EST) 2. "RE: BNSF Merger" It could also have to do with the bigger the fish the fewer the number of fish that can swallow you up or put you out of business.A lot of companies tend to go through a vicious cycle of mergers or they go bankrupt.Look at the financial industry. Banks are merging all the time. I used to work for a banking system they had a 'conversion' aka merger about once a year. Finally they merged with another banking system and took their name because it was more pleasing and available in all markets. It looks like a better option for management to be bought out by a competitor, where everyone gets a fighting chance at keeping their jobs. Than it is to file for bankruptcy protection.Plus once the competetor gets bigger, you have to get bigger too or you just can't compete anymore. The real loser is the public. There is less competition, less choices, and less service.

Sep-29-01, 02:59 PM (EST) 3. "RE: BNSF Merger" Well another reason, BN could not afford to be shut out of southern California. UP had already taken over WP, SP was in trouble, but SF was OK. Since the ICC killed the SPSF merger, it made since for BN to merge with a healthy SF, with left UP to dance with SP Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-02-01, 02:27 AM (EST) 8. "RE: BNSF Merger" Negative. I used to work for First Bank System (a former MN corporation) now known a US BANK CORP. (I think that was the name they go by now.)Any way I stopped working for them in the mid 90's, after I got divorced and moved back to California.

Oct-01-01, 06:07 AM (EST) 6. "RE: BNSF Merger" I can't say for sure, but i would suspect that UP eating up vast portions of the US railroads has a little something to do with it!----- BUZZ Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-02-01, 00:51 AM (EST) 7. "RE: BNSF Merger" hey atleast the merger kept the BN and the SF, and down here in So Cal we still have regular painted SF units with the occasional BNSF. but it's still a helluva lot better than the U.P. S.P. "merger". with the elimination of anything SP. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-02-01, 02:59 AM (EST) 9. "RE: BNSF Merger" You got that right! I still get some occasional great shots of old SF and BN paint schemes in the consists that go by my house.Don't see too many EMD GP-60M's (sf #147) around here, but atleast they aren't painted yellow.Message Areas - "BNSF Merger" – image 1Pardon the compression. And the BNSF nameplate is easily painted over. If someone ever makes a GP-60 model.CHECK OUT MY LATEST...
