My ISP logs me off during a large download if I'm not using other internet sites. It leaves a message saying connection idle or inactive. Any ideas? Thanks, Roger D.

That's actually your OS, not your ISP. It's basically saying it's seen no input from you, so it disconnects you.You should be able to disable that in your internet options in the control panel.-Jeff

It could also be your ISP, depending on who it is. Back in the dark early days of my online life, I had Netzero. It would most certainly log you off during a download, unless you were present at the computer to click a "remain logged on" window that popped up.

Then Netzero is almost certainly part of your problem, and there isn't anything in your OS settings you can change to help you out. Your only options are to stand by and monitor the download, while clicking on other sites every once in a while to make sure it sees you as active.
Or, like you suggested, you can go back to AT&T. I went from Netzero to AT&T a couple years back, and couldn't believe the difference. Netzero is just crap, to put it bluntly. If dial-up is your only option, I'd highly suggest grabbing AT&T as an ISP. If I had to go back to dial-up, it'd be AT&T.
And while we're at it, if DSL is even a remote option for you, look into it. I got DSL less than 8 weeks ago, and OMG, it's changed my MSTS life. Assuming you have the hard drive space to store everything, DSL just opens the door to limitless routes, stock, routes, activities, routes, cabs, routes, sounds, and did I mention, ROUTES? I can't believe I suffered through dial-up limitations for so long. Downloading at 80K/sec is pure heaven for me.
Good luck,
Pop

>Who is your ISP? Errrmmmm.... That is your OS, not your ISP as I mentioned to rjd.Are you trying to tell me that netzero was logging your keystrokes? If you are downloading something, you are definitely not idle as far as your ISP is concerned. Your ISP has absolutely no way of knowing (unless they've put a trojan on your system) if you are at your computer while you're downloading or not. And they most definitely can not cause a "remain logged on" window to pop up.If your ISP wants to log you off, you will simply be disconnected. Then your dial-up adapter will show a message saying "connection terminated by peer" or "connection timed out". It's your OS. I promise. I can guarantee that changing ISP's had absolutely no impact on whether this window comes up for you or not LAHDPOP.-Jeff

>"I can guarantee that changing ISP's had absolutely no impact on whether this window comes up for you or not LAHDPOP."
Yes, it most certainly did. The window that poppped up was a Netzero window. If the Netzero servers aren't actively monitoring your actions, that's fine, I'll buy that. In which case, the "trojan" is part of the Netzero software bundle. Either way, they consider a download as idle time, if you're not doing anything else. To keep a download going, you must either do some navigating in a different browser window, or respond to the pop-up by clicking "stay online." It's their way of limiting your download abilities. You've got to really want the download, and be willing to monitor your computer the whole time. That discourages large downloads, and enables them to offer their crappy services to more people, using less bandwidth. Trust me, I used them for 2 years or more (back when it was still free), and it was maddening.
All that being said, I'll admit there might be a way to hack the Netzero software into allowing downloads without interruption, but I never tried it. Pop

Click to send message via ICQ

I don't know what windows you are using, but when I had dial-up I used a program "Dunce" which you could set to click the "Stay connected?" window. And yes this was ISP, not OS. They would pop it up every 2 hours just like clock-work.

Simpler solution: Set Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express to send/receive every 5 minutes or less, this will keep your connection alive...Rob
