Humor: USMC Letter from Iraq Back Home to West Virginia – image 1Dear Ma & Pa,I'm good. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt & Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch at the Wheeling creosote plant by a dang mile. Tell them to join up quick before maybe all of the places is filled.I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m., but am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt & Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay or rattlesnakes to kill. Practically nothing in the way of real work. Men got to shave, but it ain't so bad, on account they git warm water.Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc, but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, chicken fried steak, huevos rancheros and other regular food. But tell Walt & Elmer you can always sit between two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you till noon, when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route" marches, which the Platoon Sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys gets sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice, but awful crowded -- nothing like West Virginia.
The Sergeant is like a schoolteacher. He nags some. The Captain is
like the school board. Majors & Colonels just ride around & frown. They don't bother you none. This next will kill Walt & Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. Don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a squirrel and it don't move. And it ain't shooting back at you, like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is to lay there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes -- imagine that!Be sure to tell Walt & Elmer to hurry & join before other fellers get into this set up & come stampeding in.Your loving daughter,
Susan

I read this with a little frustration. Poking fun at good ol' West Virginia. But after reading, that just about hits the nail on the head. But after all, West Virginia is my home state, and that could apply to almost anyone that lives here.

wd:I live in a region also noted for its "Hillbilly's", and we get it quite often too. The fact is though, we're fierecely independant, talk like hicks, love the mountains, and make few bones about it. And indeed some of our women are tougher than pine knots. (Example: I know one that stands near 6', weighs in about 190 lbs, and can arm wrestle with the best of the men! She's a hick-talkin' college degree graduate that's a supervisor in a poultry processing plant, and recently when confronted by an obstinate male worker, she physically removed him as she fired him!)I suspect our culture is quite similiar to yours: May be a bit rough shod at times, but the ability of the regionals to survive is amazing. Plus, when someone is in need or having a crisis, they come out of the woodwork to try to support or help in any way they can.As for me, I don't mind at all being "common folk" and being classified as from a "Hick town" or region. There's some mighty good "hicks" around these parts, and I suspect likewise in WV.Andre Ming

>The last line "Your loving daughter" slays me!
>Yeah Marc its a new world isn't it?BTW, Jessica Lynch (The POW who was rescued from the Bagdad Hospital) is from rural West Virginia....From all accounts she gave a pretty good accounting of herself in the fire fight that preceeded her capture...I wouldn't mess with the "Mountain Folk"!
It could hurt!

I had a bud who was a major history buff and wrote an alternate WWII history story that involved German forces landing in the Gulf states and having a bit of serious trouble down in them Louisiana bayous with the cajuns.Gary S
