I notice at many sites sites (including here) XP/IE6 will autodownload the file you selected into the Temp Internet FIles folder, I know about the "save target as" but thats not always a option everywhere you go, is they're any way to disable the autodownload garbage so I can select where I want something saved at?

RE: XP question regarding downloading

What your describing is the way Internet Explorer, (all versions for all OS's), is designed to function. When your downloading a file from the internet with IE, the IE temp files folder is used as a temp holding place for the downloaded files until the download is complete. When the download completes, IE moves the complete file to the users specified folder for that download. This feature is especially helpful with a dial-up connection and large download files. You can sometimes resume an interrupted long download if the whole file will fit in your current IE cache file.

RE: XP question regarding downloading

Another option is to right click on I accept Start download and select save Target As. You can then specify the folder it goes to

RE: XP question regarding downloading

Dennis,
If you ever check the "don't ask me again" button, even by mistake, it will do exactly as is happening to these guys... Then it downloads it completely without asking you and opens WinZip and you have to save it using the <F7> function in Winzip...
The only way to stop it is a registry hack and I am at the grandkids right now so don't have it with me.....Chuck Schneider

RE: XP question regarding downloading

Thanks Chuck for the clarification. I haven't run into that one before, probably because I've always answered all of the prompts correctly.

RE: XP question regarding downloading

To get Winzip back to normal go to folder options (on Tools menu in XP not sure about other OS's) click File Types find WinZip on the list, click Advanced and make sure the box 'Confirm open after download' is checked. You will now have the option of where to save downloads.Bill
