Sep-13-01, 11:36 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" i knew something like this was going to happen. i just didnt expect it so soon, or so horrible. i was getting used to the small terrorist attacks killing maybe 100 or 200 people. i had thought the uss cole attack was a huge tradgedy, but this one i wasnt, and probabbly the whole world wasnt, prepared for. and seeing those palestinians dancing and cheering and passing out cakes and candy just stirred my anger even more. living in what seems to be the worlds most hated country has got me a bit uneasy, but seeing all the support we are getting from other nations is comforting, i just wish they would give us help clearing all the debris faster. so far they have about 200 confirmed dead in DC, and about 60 in NYC, but sadly those are just small fractions of the totals. i have so much more to say, but im still in shock and deep saddness over what has happened.

Sep-13-01, 02:45 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" The depth of sadness is overwelming, I can't express it. And I believe we are in for even more sadness as the days grind on. I feel a big hole in my heart - all I can do is hug my wife'n' kids - How can you explain to an Autistic child - so that they can understand-( hell, I don't even understand the depths of hatred those bastards must've felt for US).
I am not so angry yet- I guess I'm still in shock or somethin, but I feel little anger. I know our country will go hot'n'heavy on those responsible and many people are going to die. And I fear an escalation of retribution, leading to even more mass destruction and horrific death-tolls. I am sorry - I know this is really not the forum for this - Nels, forgive me. But I was asked how I felt on this post. And, well, I am struck to the heart as we all are!
I am not normally a flag waver, but I will fly my country's flag every day until all the responsible parties are broght to justice.Message Areas - "Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" – image 2TIM Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

The fear of further retribution is valid, but musn't deter us from destroying terrorists and host nations.I'd rather be dead than live under their gun. It's time to show terrorist nations what terror really is. Sep-14-01, 02:34 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" The following editorial by Leonard Pitts, appearing in the Miami Herald, gives voice to what I (and perhaps many of us) feel but have difficulty articulating. I thought I'd share it...
Leonard Pitts, The Miami Herald Published
Wednesday, September 12, 2001We'll go forward from this moment It's my job to have something to say. They pay me to provide words that help make sense of that which troubles the American soul. But in this moment of airless shock when hot tears sting disbelieving eyes, the only thing I can find to say, the only words that seem to fit, must be addressed to the unknown author of this suffering. You monster. You beast. You unspeakable bastard. What lesson did you hope to teach us by your coward's attack on our World Trade Center, our Pentagon, us? What was it you hoped we would learn? Whatever it was, please know that you failed. Did you want us to respect your cause? You just damned your cause. Did you want to make us fear? You just steeled our resolve. Did you want to tear us apart? You just brought us together.Let me tell you about my people. We are a vast and quarrelsome family, a family rent by racial, social, political and class division, but a family nonetheless. We're frivolous, yes, capable of expending tremendous emotional energy on pop cultural minutiae -- a singer's revealing dress, a ball team's misfortune, a cartoon mouse. We're wealthy, too, spoiled by the ready availability of trinkets and material goods, and maybe because of that, we walk through life with a certain sense of blithe entitlement. We are fundamentally decent, though -- peace-loving and compassionate. We struggle to know the right thing and to do it. And we are, the overwhelming majority of us,people of faith, believers in a just and loving God. Some people -- you, perhaps -- think that any or all of this makes us weak. You're mistaken. We are not weak. Indeed, we are strong in ways that cannot be measured by arsenals.IN PAIN
Yes, we're in pain now. We are in mourning and we are in shock. We're still grappling with the unreality of the awful thing you did, still working to make ourselves understand that this isn't a special effect from some Hollywood blockbuster, isn't the plot development from a Tom Clancy novel. Both in terms of the awful scope of their ambition and the probable final death toll, your attacks are likely to go down as the worst acts of terrorism in the history of the United States and, probably, the history of the world. You've bloodied us as we have never been bloodied before. But there's a gulf of difference between making us bloody and making us fall. This is the lesson Japan was taught to its bitter sorrow the last time anyone hit us this hard, the last time anyone brought us such abrupt and monumental pain. When roused, we are righteous in our outrage, terrible in our force. When provoked by this level of barbarism, we will bear any suffering, pay any cost, go to any length, in the pursuit of justice. I tell you this without fear of contradiction. I know my people, as you,I think, do not. What I know reassures me. It also causes me to tremble with dread of the future. In the days to come, there will be recrimination and accusation, fingers pointing to determine whose failure allowed this to happen and what can be done to prevent it from happening again. There will be heightened security, misguided talk of revoking basic freedoms. We'll go forward from this moment sobered, chastened, sad. But determined, too. Unimaginably determined.THE STEEL IN USYou see, the steel in us is not always readily apparent. That aspect of our character is seldom understood by people who don't know us well. On this day, the family's bickering is put on hold. As Americans we will weep, as Americans we will mourn, and as Americans, we will rise in defense of all that we cherish. So I ask again: What was it you hoped to teach us? It occurs to me that maybe you just wanted us to know the depths of your hatred. If that's the case, consider the message received. And take this message in exchange: You don't know my people. You don't know what we're capable of. You don't know what you just started. But you're about to learn.Message Areas - "Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" – image 4 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-15-01, 01:26 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" My biggest quetion is "When will we strike THEM"? It is a terrible sight to see the carnage on U.S. soil. We should have finished Desert Storm by getting Sadam Hussein and all his cohorts. We had the means available then and did nothing after the 100 hour war. I say find out who did it and ELIMINATE them! No "Bring them to justice" as the news media keeps saying. They lost their rights in my mind when they did what they did.Swift and total military action is warranted. Our immigration policy is flawed by allowing these terrorists to even enter the country and live here among us. Thanks, regards to all, Bob.

Sep-15-01, 01:46 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" After seeing the carnage on the "Highway of Death" in 1991's war to free Kuwait, I became anti-war. I knew that we had to do what we had to, but seeing that , what a horrific eye-opener- no pumped up glory there.BUT NOW, after seeing and hearing what I saw on CNN.com and Radio( I Killed my cable 3 years ago), I believe the only recourse is total annihilation of all terrorist weeds, seeds, and off-shoots; NO QUARTER, NO IFS AND OR BUTS! The time for discussion is over.
As Bugs would say..."Of Course You Know This Means WAR!"Message Areas - "Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" – image 6

Sep-15-01, 03:48 AM (EST) 8. "Exactly: the US should have finished the job with Iraq..." As the war against Iraq was coming to an end, and the US decided kind-heartedly not to go all the way, and eliminate mr Saddam Hussein and his fellow partners-in-crime, my dad said that the US were fooled and would learn the hard way. I know he was right, because he grew up in Nazi-Germany, and knows how deceptive dictators like Saddam Hussein can really be:-they never learn
-they never give up
-they don't care about human life, including their country men.The Gulf war teached us, how little mr Saddam Hussein cares about his own people-why would he respect the lives of the US?I personally believe, this guy is behind the World Trade Center terrorist-attack.1. It happened shortly after Bush was elected. When keeping in mind that it was also a Bush who lead the attack agains Iraq, you undestand how much that man must hate your president.2. As someone already said on this forum, the terrorist attact didn't make the americans learn nothing else, but the hatred of those who did it. Maybe that was his point. Evil revenge.3. Only Saddam Hussein is crazy enough to believe, he's unbreakable, and can do anything he wants. Luckily, we know he's wrong. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-16-01, 10:50 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Exactly: the US should have finished the job with Iraq..." If Sadam Hussein is responsible I say LEVEL Iraq. Get him and all his cohorts like we should have done once before. We should have taken him captive to stand trial for his war crimes in a World Court, or killed him, and should have completely destroyed any war making capabilities he had. That includes chemical, biological and nuclear facilities. His communications and command and control structures were damaged but not completely taken out. He still had troops, tanks, and other warmaking equipment. I am a loyal Republican but I blame ex President Bush and Colin Powell for not completing the job the first time! If the evidence shows Sadam Hussein was involved finish the job! Get behind President Bush and hope that he does what should have been done by his father, if Iraq was involved in this carnage! <Bob>

Sep-17-01, 02:48 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" Seeing as I just went through a tropical storm, and the subsequent 52 hour power outage it caused me, I've had a lot of time to think in the last few days. I already come into all of this with a perspective different than a lot of people, since I do not have any beliefs in the patriotism department. What Tuesday was, to me, was a crime against civilization. I don't care about the symbolism of who and what was attacked.. it was an attack.I see a lot of finger-pointing already beginning, mostly in the media. Someone has to find someone to blame. Blaming the intelligence community.. blaming the airlines.. blaming the government as a whole. I say blame the human race. We are not nearly so advanced as we'd like to believe, if we still have large groups of people in this world who would so easily commit such acts as casually as you or I would change our shirts. 4,000+ dead is 4,000+ dead, whether it's in New York, Los Angeles, Tampa, Houston, Ontario, Tokyo, Sydney, Moscow, Paris, Jerusalem, Rome, Singapore, Havana, Miami, Yeehaw Junction, or whereever. Many want to declare war on terrorism.. I think, most of the same people "declared war" on drugs, and it didn't get them very far. (in other words, it was all a bunch of talk and chest-pounding) Declare war on sheer blinding ignorance.. declare war on mindless hatred.. declare war on those who have no more conscience than the average doorknob.. declare war on those who would keep the human race down by not letting go of those things that have almost destroyed us in the past. Yes, it might involve killing many of them.. but sad to say, that's about the only act that many of them will understand. Making "resolutions of resolve" is meaningless to them. Waving a flag, singing songs, and burning candles is meaningless to them. If that's what a person has to do for themselves to get them through this, that's fine.. just don't fall under the illusion that it means anything to the people who caused this.I could say a lot more, but it would risk tapping into deeper feelings that go way beyond all this. It's better left for another day. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-17-01, 12:27 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Attack on The United States...How does it strike you?" I see your point that it's useless now to lay blame and point fingers at those areas we failed at, we must learn from it.I also see your point that waving flags, singing songs, burning candles is an empty gesture -TO THE TERRORISTS. BUT it means EVERYTHING to AMERICANS (and to every soul that loves freedom and civilized behavior)This is not about America the country, but about America the people! The America that is in All of Us, in our hearts and minds. These sub-humans that call themselves holy warriors will NEVER understand this. It is THEIR ignorance, hatred, senseless brutality, and lack of concience that must be dealt with once and for all or we will always be in their power.
I am not a war-monger, I find no satisfaction in the whole business, but our country was attacked in a most cowardly, dastardly and senseless way.
I recieved this email today, originally written by an 18- year old, and I think what he says holds alot of truth....
An email from Charles Brennan, 18 year old
An open letter to a terrorist: Well, you hit the World Trade Center, but you missed America. You hit the
Pentagon, but you missed America. You used helpless American bodies, to
take out other American bodies, but like a poor marksman, you STILL missed
America. Why? Because of something you guys will never understand. America isn't
about a building or two, not about financial centers, not about military
centers, America isn't about a place, America isn't even about a bunch of
bodies. America is about an IDEA. An idea, that you can go someplace where
you can earn as much as you can figure out how to, live for the most part,
like you envisioned living, and pursue Happiness. (No guarantees that
you'll reach it, but you can sure try!). Go ahead and whine your terrorist whine, and chant your terrorist litany:
"If you can not see my point, then feel my pain." This concept is alien to
Americans. We live in a country where we don't have to see your point. But
you're free to have one. We don't have to listen to your speech. But
you're free to SAY one. Don't know where you got the strange idea that
everyone has to agree with you. We don't agree with each other in this
country, almost as a matter of pride. We're a collection of guys that
don't agree, called States. We united our individual states to protect
ourselves from tyranny in the world. Another idea, we made up on the spot.
You CAN make it up as you go, when it's your country. You guys seen to be incapable of understanding that we don't live in
America, America live in US! American spirit is what it's called. And
killing a few thousand of us, or a few million of us, won't change it.
Most of the time, it's a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of Spirit. Until we're
crossed in a cowardly manner, then it becomes an entirely different kind
of Spirit. Wait until you see what we do with that Spirit, this time. Sleep tight, if
you can. We're coming.
