Well we can't blame it on Iraqi's, unless you want to blame them for America's high calorie diet. I bet there's still gonna be someone who's gonna find a way to blame this one on Iraq. Geez, it ain't Sadaam's fault that this guy went for a BigMac everyday after work. The guy had a heart attack, its only a big story cause it happened while he was in Iraq. If it happened at home, nobody would have given a rats ass.CHARTER MEMBER - Since August 2001 Looks Like a Pony, RUNS LIKE A STALLION

While it is a shame that he died, his death is (most likely) independant of the fact he was covering the war in Iraq. While what BNSF4723 said may sound a little harsh, it is unfortunately, probably true.

Actually Dave IMO BNSF4723 IS behaving like an a$$hole. However, the unfortunate gentleman in question was based here in the Metro DC area and according to the local media of which he was a member he was in pretty decent shape and a regular denizen of a health club. A local MD this morning said it was more likely caused by sitting for an extended period of time on the flight over or in his Humvee/AMtrak which may cause clots in the legs or maybe even lack of proper hydration and heat exhaustion given he has been living in his CBW Suit for an extended period... The Dr. went on further to say that in his (the Dr's) judgment it was probably caused by a combination of all of the above coupled to being 39 and not 19 like the troops. No mention of Too Many Big MACs!BNSF4723 Dude! You've got to stop believing every thing the Iraqi minister of (dis)information tells you! If you can't I can get you a hell of an exclusive deal on a Florida Swamp or a franchise on a toll booth on the Brooklyn Bridge.

David Bloom's reports were truely a class of it's own. His reports were flawless, true to the heart, and he always had alot of information. The coverage that he brought during the sandstorm in the desert, from when they first entered Baghdad was incredible, my prayers go out to his wife and 3 children. He was a great man indeed...

Yep, I agree LAHDPOP.I beg to differ, 4723. His untimely death would have gotten coverage here in the US, and have been a big deal. Mr. Bloom was about the only MSNBC reporter besides Lester Holt and Tom Brokaw that I could stand to listen to (voice wise) My thoughts and prayers go to his family. I will admit that I was wrong about some of the facts I stated, I was mis-informed on Iraq's history. I'm sorry. BUT, I will not tolerate being attacked like that and having people hounding me cause I don't support the US. This forum is an international forum, you don't have to be an All American Supporter to talk here. What I say is not intended as flaming, its IMHO. Alert away now...

I didn't say squat about your support for the US. I called you an idiot a-hole because of your ridiculous, insensitive remarks about a kind father of three little girls dying. Why don't you go tell them tonight, while their mom is hugging their sobbing little bodies, that their dad ate too many Big Macs, and that they may be sad, but at least they can't blame this on Iraq.
What a moron. I stand by my original opinion of you. You're a waste. An absolute embarassment to other carbon-based life forms.

RE: OT: NBC Reporter dies in Iraq

The problem, BNSF4723, isn't so much with the opinion you expressed, but the way you wrote it. I, myself, am a great expert in tactless writing - which is why I often asked my boss (or whoever else was around) to proof read messages I had to send to customers or colleagues when they were of a negative or critical nature during my technical support days).I quite agree that a surfeit of western food may well have contributed to this gentelman's death (I assume he was a gentleman until given strong reason to believe otherwise). I, too, am suffering health problems which are almost certainly due to eating a western diet - too much meat (especially red meat), not enough variety in the vegetable and fruit departments, not enough excercise, etc. In my case I'm dealing with prostate cancer, which is almost certainly diet related. You could quite easily have expressed your oppinion that this gentleman had a poor diet in a much more tactful manner than you did, and that's why you got the critical response - which I heartily agree with. Oh! and by the way, don't go slamming me as another pro-war person - I'm not, I'm quite strongly against the war in Iraq.John

Lets not forget that another reporter covering the war died when his vehicle flipped into a ditch.David Bloom was responsible for the set up of the "Bloom Mobile" and because of it, the excellent coverage that we were able to watch. My condolences goes out to his family. The news metioned that he died from a pulmonary embolism which is basically a blood clot in the lungs. I would think a heart attack is different or is it?Edit: Michael Kelly is the other reporter that died. My condolences to his family as well.Edward K.

I can express my point of view if I want. I don't agree with the United States and this war. I believe the United States are just putting their head in where it doesn't belong and trying to get more status as a power country. I love the United States but this war serves little point. I personally don't care about your flaming. I'm a Canadian against this war and I dont care who knows. I also don't appreciate the things the U.S. has said about Canadians against war. RE: OT: NBC Reporter dies in Iraq

As an Australian of Iraqi Descent I believe you are seriously mis-informed about the reasons given for this war. You or your family have not had to cope with the fear of an oppresive madman or his goons standing over your shoulder everyday. I still have relatives in Iraq and I know they would welcome an Iraq free from persecution, subjection and domination from a sadistic megalomaniac such as Saddam Hussein. I bet you don't go to sleep at night wondering if your door will be busted in and family members taken for interrogation because they dared to speak against the regime. The people of Iraq quest freedom from Saddam's rule. The problem is most don't talk about it because of fear. Fear of death, torture or beatings. So before you judge what you may think this war is about get a clue about the history of Iraq and the other reasons behind the actions of the coalition forces.

I'm not quite sure how the military allowed journalists to travel along with them in the first place.
First off there's a chance they could give out information which would compromise the troop's security (Geraldo already got himself kicked out of Iraq for this). Secondly, traveling with the troops puts the journalists in danger. They don't have the training the military does in how to handle the various situations they could get run into. IMO, this "imbedded" reporter idea doesn't sound too smart.Jordan

RE: OT: NBC Reporter dies in Iraq

Jordan,Who knows, maybe they wanted to use imbedded reporters to show not only the american public, but the rest of the world how the war is going. A portion of the world refuses to believe we are in Baghdad, but we know better. As far as the training is concerned, I heard on television that all of the imbedded reporters went through a form of basic training before going to the field. What Geraldo did was extremely stupid and he should have known better.

RE: OT: NBC Reporter dies in Iraq

The reason for having "Embedded" reporters,is pretty simple,to give the American public the US military "view" of events.Much the same as the Iraqi information department does for the Iraqis. So much so that one town was "liberated" nine times before it was admitted that resistance was still being experienced, and it was byepassed. No doubt this post will also be taken as being a political one by my mate Chuck. There seems to be new wave of McCarthyism, thinly disguised as so called patriotism,in that Chuck is allowed to air his views with impunity, whilst any contrary to his is "alerted" by him to the moderators. They in their wisdom then lock or remove the thread, thus reinforcing this extremism. It's a funny sort of democracy that demands 100% of political support from its population, and the populations of its allies, when embarking on a military campaign, and I trust that this is not the "model" that will be imposed on Iraq.If it is,then just change Saddam to Bush and leave things as they are.
Indeed I thought the whole point of this exercise(now that WMD's seem to be off the agenda) was to "free" the people of Iraq from such a totalitarian imposition of Saddam's views on his people. What the Iraqi information ministry has to do with American dietary habits,IE the original "Big Mac" remark escapes me,but it seems to have some relevance to Chuck,as some sort of fifth column propoganda "scheme" to enable him to have a rant.Six reporters have died in this war,so far,and I trust your sympathies will be extended to them also,as are mine, especially those killed by "friendly" fire.If you really want to see "unbiassed?" war reporting, then try http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/ and form to your own opinions,"right" or "wrong".The cornerstone of democracy is to know the views of the opposition, and the defeat of those views comes from education, not imposition,or short sighted ignoring of those views.

RE: OT: NBC Reporter dies in Iraq

Embedding is a new term - but the idea is ancient. There were huge numbers of "embedded" reporters with the allied armies during the second world war, and some of them made reputations which lasted for the rest of their lives.Certainly they do tend to provide the view that the military they are embedded with want's propagated - but not always. They tend to be a two-edged sword - as the US Military learned in Vietnam. Also, a good news organization, provided it is not being subjected to censorship (externally enforced or sef-imposed like much of the current US news outlets) will use many sources beside the embedded reporters when making up a good report - they will also be using reporters in various other places, each filing their reports, to make up the complete story. This is one of the reasons why you get better reportage from good newspapers and radio than from TV which tends to go for the visual. Here in Canada were we have 2 national TV networks the CBC give the best coverage (it's the public network) while the private network CTV is great for watching the "The News as Entertainment".CheersJohn

Larkie is just annoyed that "his side" has lost the war! LOL!The official reason behind embedding is that there was a command decision at the highest levels not to lie to the media and to make sure that the American people and the world (Including the Arab street) have a direct window on the Facts. The operative policy was that in contrast to the Iraqis we would do every thing open and above board.
Naturally reporters tend to bond with the people they are embedded with. That's only human. Most of the ones I've watched are very careful to call that to your attention. FWIW, I Watch ABC, BBC, CBS, CNN, Fox/Sky-News and the English Language of Al-Jazeera when I can get it. That way I, as an intelligent consumer of news, am sure to get as much of the total picture from many different viewpoints as I can. But AFIAK the only censorship being employed/imposed by the US-UK-AUS military is the requirement not to give away operational details and intentions. This is what got that Bozo Geraldo Rivera booted out. He basically said on Air/Live we are here and we are going there at such and such a time.
Did you know that Al-Jazeera has embedded reporters also? And no one has made any attempt to censor or interfere with them?Contrast that with the way the Iraqi Minister of (dis)Information/Spin operates.BTW, This and my post above was just reporting news not politics...
So Larkie and friends lets just let it go shall we?Chuck Schneider

Come on Larkie...
You know you are expressing a political opinion here and that's not allowed....I am biting my tongue until blood runs down my cheeks....
To be fair you should too...I thought this guy (BNSF) was insensitive and that is what I originally slammed him for. I wasn't even aware or didn't remember his politics (Senility at 58?) at the time for that post! He then proceeded to express an opinion on the war... That is the part that got him alerted....
Sheesh I have even alerted people who support my point of view....
So lets not "spin" this too much shall we??????BTW, The BBC is now reporting that a WMD storage facility full of chemical agents has been found in central Iraq and also that some Allied troops (US Marines) exhibited symptoms of exposure to Sarin earlier in the week in eastern Iraq...FWIW, The prevailing theory here (Wash. DC) is that the "Blitzkrieg" to Baghdad over ran and destroyed most of the delivery systems and command and control sites before they could respond. It also helped that the "Man at the Top" (Saddam) has been MIA as far as coordinated military Command and Control has been concerned since the initial Strike on his "bunker".....Also, The Arab news agencies (Iran-Kuwait-Al Jazeera) are now reporting that "Chemical Ali" is KIA and the Brits have recovered what they believe is his body or parts thereof. IMO Good riddance to Bad Rubbish and the Kurds and Shiites must be dancing in the street over that.... Also same sources are reporting Iraqi revolts against the Baathists (new Arabic name for Neo-Nazi thugs) in Basra and Baghdad...
I will go back to sleep now....
