RE: Looking for info on track torpedos.

Last time I seen one it was a small square about 2in in size maybe 1/4inch thick. Found one laying by the tracks, many moons ago. I gave it to a brakeman I knew at the time.

See this post on torpedos. http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID1/4287.html Main fact about them is they are dangerous so don't go looking for them.Just a little advice if that thought crossed your mind.Frank Roberts

Just let you all know: they are about 2 inch square with a lead strap running though them also the bottem is sand covered. And when they go off VERY LOUD, after all they have to be heard over the train noise.

RE: Looking for info on track torpedos.

Torpedos come in various shapes, size, and colors. Basically, they are a small charge of explosives triggered by impact of wheels. Generally, they are about 2 inches square, Ihave seen red ones and yellow ones....and they have either a wire or metal strap which which one would secure them to the railhead. When a train hits them, they explode -- very loudly. And sometimes those metal straps fly.Do NOT play with them. They may be cute and make a lot of noise, but basically they are yet another very dangerous tool of railroading.

RE: Looking for info on track torpedos.

Don't hit them with hammers.
Don't put them under the corner of your friends bed.
Don't put them under the wheels of your friends car.
Don't put them in the back pocket of your friend's pants.
Don't put them in the road by a drive-in window.Yes, now, some of them sound like great fun, but they are all EXTREMELY DANGEROUS manuvers!

The FRA still mandates that all locomotives and caboose have a certant ammount of fuses and torpedos are on board, YOu can fail a unit's inspection by not having that number. I know the number and location to get them on the locomotives, but due to the ammount of kids and otherwise on this forum I am not telling. While most new ones require 200Lbs of force to detonate they are stil quite dangerous.

They just have to be in the cab area "somewhere".I was surprised when I noticed where they put them in the Pacific Surfliner cab cars....they are NOT in public reach (unlike the former ex-Metroliner cab cars, where they'd be in a flagging kit laying somewhere in the baggage rack (sometimes even at the other end of the car from the cab, as it slid with a hard stop!!!)

RE: Looking for info on track torpedos.

YES INDEED! They are NOT to be played with!We had a box of bad torpedoes, I noticed during my truck inventory, that several were "sweating", a dangerous sign. I gave them to the Train Master, who I think gave them the fire department to dispose of. They are certainly not for anyone who has not been trained to properly handle them!
