I am researching the F45 and have only found Santa Fe units. Did any other railroad own any of these??? I have found a website that lists 86 F45's as being built between June 1968 and May 1971.
Thanks for any replies with additional info, Jim

Nope. Amtrak had 150 similar-looking SDP40F locomotives, but these were 3,000 hp units. In fact, they were practically lengthened SD40-2s in a cowl carbody. As the folks in this thread said: Burlington Northern, Wisconsin Central, and NYSW all had F45s. Other owners include or included, Milwaukee (non-dynamic), Montana Rail Link and (briefly) BNSF. Also, some of the BN units originated with Great Northern prior to the merger. The Utah railroad also operated F45s in BN paint, but I believe that they were leased rather than owned outright.Henry

I honestly thought only the ATSF owned them...w/ the SDP40's being owned by other R.R.'s

CN
They have WC's.Plus they bought some a while back, used, someone up there in management thought that the parts would work for the SD50's and 60F's.None were ever used in revenue service.

RE: What railroads owned F45 Diesels--other than Santa

Santa Fe and Great Northern were the original owners of F45's. I know Santa Fe had 40 of them, they were originally 1900-1939, then in the major renumbering in the early 1970's they became 5900-5939.
And in a later upgrade/renumbering, they became 5950-5989 series.I believe only two actually of the former ATSF fleet made it into service in the BNSF merger, but neither were repainted into BNSF colors (now that would look sharp, I think...)Some of Santa Fe's were sold to Wisconsin Central and I believe some also were sold to the New York, Susquehanna & Western (I could be wrong; these all could have been ex-GN/BN units). And maybe some other second-hand units elsewhere. Not sure of the status of any of the Great Northern units, though I'm sure most people will figure out they went to BN.

Amtrak, Santa Fe, and BNSF also owned SDP40F/SDF40s but they were all scrapped recently.

RE: What railroads owned F45 Diesels--other than Santa

I seem to recall that a company called 'Transcisco Tours' bought two ex-BN F45 for a short-lived passenger train project between San Francisco and Reno. I believe that one of the two units is now owned by Doyle McCormack, who painted it into a livery resembling Southern Pacific 'Daylight'. It has been used several times to accompany the 'Daylight' GS-4 4-8-4 on excursions.

RE: What railroads owned F45 Diesels--other than Santa

The Great Northern ordered 46 units split into a few orders between 5/69 and 5/71.GN 427-432 - to BN 6600-6605
GN 433-440 - tp BN 6606-6613The following were ordered by the GN and delivered to the BN in cascade green.BN 6614-6625
BN 6626-6645The early orders had the headlights over the windshield and the early units came with the headlights in the nose door.Where did the BN F45's go? The only Railroads that purchased directly from BN were the Utah and the NYSW. Several went to CN for Parts, Doyle McCormack bought one and several resellers.I'd like to see one of our payware folks offer this locomotive in several versions.Regards,JohnLong Live the Green and Black.

RE: What railroads owned F45 Diesels--other than Santa

Here's a link to a website with some photos of a F45 in 'Transcisco Tours' livery. Maroon carbody with a broad blue stripe. Elsewhere, I have found some photos of passenger cars also painted into this livery.
http://n6ecv.net/trancisco.htm
The website says that Transcisco had three F45, not two as I incorrectly recalled above. Apparently Transcisco had a rather short history. It started operations in 1990 and liquidated in bankruptcy in 1991.

In this (or maybe last) month's railroad model craftsman, there's instructions on how to make an F45a and b set. (now the b was never made) painted in the new bnsf colours. To be honest, it looks really nice.

Sorry about the quality, but here is a pic of a WC F45 (trailing unit) entering Shops Yard in North Fond Du Lac. These were actually ex-Santa Fe diesels. I believe, if my memory serves me correctly, these got the scrap torch after the CN takeover, but somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

All the WC F45's are safely in the hands of Ed Burkhardts latest venture. "Rail World" they are currently stored. As for the CN purchese of some BN F45's some of the hulks remain near Montreal. Finally the Utah Railway MK5000C's are reciving AR11 Alternators and 16-645F3B prime movers from retired UP (MP) SD50's, they will all return to service by summer.
