Ah, so you like the teeshirt I had a batch of them made up special for this event. Originally I had expected to have several people come along to take photos, all in matching logo teeshirts, but as it turned out only one person could make it and it was too cold and rainy to show off the shirts.I have a few extra if anyone is interested that I'll let go for cost plus shipping. Drop me an email if interested: nels@train-sim.com

Other than any age restrictions, there are at least 3 heritage lines in Ontario. All of them run diesel and one also runs steam from Victoria day on. I'm sure they are all looking for more volunteers to help them and 2 of them aren't that far from Oakville. The South Simcoe Railway has 2 steam locos, one of which may be the oldest operating steamer in Canada (I may be wrong on that), built in 188?. They also have a diesel they use for last-run-of-the-day fire checks, and at Easter it will be hauling the Easter Bunny trains. This line is on all that's left of the Hamilton - Barry line, between Tottenham and Beeton. http://www.steamtrain.comThe York-Durham Heritage railway ( http://www.ydhr.on.ca ) runs between Stouffville and Uxbridge. All diesel - old locos and stock. They haven't published there schedule for this year yet, but they are looking for volunteers in all departments, including opperations. The Port Stanley Terminal Railway ( http://www.pstr.on.ca ) runs between Port Stanley and St. Thomas. Also all diesel. They have published their 2003 schedule. If you're looking for the chance to drive, you could try approaching any of these about volunteering with them. From some of your other posts I have the impression that you are a young man, so there may be some legal age restrictions. However, as was mentioned in another thread, establishing a good record as a volunteer in those activities you can legally do would put you in an excellent position for when you come of legal age.Oh! and for a somewhat different type of railway heritage, there's the "Street Car Museum", more formally the Halton County Radial Railway near Guelph. Unlimitted rides once you've paid the admission, and some rather attractive old stock. If you have a valid driver's licence you can drive the street cars if you are a member (according to the membership page on their website, http://www.hcry.org/ ).
CheersJohn

Nels, If you want the chance to operate a diesel next you have to go to the Naugatuck Valley railroad museum. They have a course similar to Essex called engineer for an hour where at the end you run a train from Torrington to Waterbury and I believe back. The engine can be one of several depending on the day and whats running. When I can afford it I intend on going myself. Heres the link http://www.rmne.org/

No wrecks allowed here!It is a beautiful engine and just think, it's just their backup locomotive. The Mikado that's all taken apart in the engine house is their main power.Even if you don't go drive the locomotives, the Valley Railroad is well worth the trip as the ride is nice, as are the river boat trips that connect to the train trips. There's more equipment in the yard to see too, but it was just too wet to photograph it all.

Glad you enjoyed it. I have had several days in years gone by on the footplate of the R H & D R in Kent (UK) which is a 15" gauge railway operating a scheduled service nearly every day of the year with diesel and during spring to autumn with steam. Also on a couple of mainline diesels in Scotland. You are right in that it is an opportunity not to be missed. That's a great bell on the video out of Essex. Any chance of a .wav file for that in the downloads?Bill

RE: My Hand On The Throttle

I was thinking of doing some audio capture as I agree the bell is nice. I had to go buy a video capture thingie to take the videos but it doesn't seem to be able to capture sound separately and I don't seem to have the cables to wire the video camera to the sounds card to capture it that way. I'll get to it somehow...

RE: My Hand On The Throttle

Having spent one season running std. gauge steam for a tourist line, as well as other seat time, you nailed it:MSTS (fun as it is) is NOTHING like actually running a locomotive/train. There is no "feel" in MSTS, you can't hear the stack telling you what needs to happen next, etc. (BTW, every steamer I've run to date has a stiff throttle.) Thought MSTS is a lot of fun... it's not the same.Glad you had the chance to experience it.Andre Ming

Right, there is some level of detail that you just cannot simulate. It's the same thing with flying and flightsims, except there you can get a pilot's license and your own plane (which I did as a result of flightsimming!).

RE: My Hand On The Throttle

Hi Nels, great story and a beautiful engine. It must have been a great experience for you…Trainwise, I came the other way round. Will say, I started dealing with real life trains during my studies in the late 1980s. In thisn time, I owned a little white card giving me the permission to ride on the footplate on nearly the whole East German network (Deutsche Reichsbahn). So I quite well remember my first ride on a footplate. Although it was "only" a Diesel, I won't forget that trip.
A very special experience was a tour with a 750mm narrow gauge steamer between Freital-Hainsberg and Kurort Kipsdorf (the line that was completely destroyed by last August's floods). Nothing compares with firing and driving a real steam loco.BTW, if you ever manage to come over to the "Old Europe", you must join the "Dresdner Dampflokfest" (Dresden Steam Locomotive Festival). It became one of the World's biggest railway festivals.MarcoTrainsimmers of all countries - unite!

Yes, I've heard that too. I'd be very happy if it were the FL9 being used the day I go down there. Their New Haven RS3 wouldn't be a bad choice either though. The Train-Sim.Com teeshirt would go better with the FL9 though

RE: My Hand On The Throttle

That was a great read! Thanks for the story, Nels! It's interesting that you mentioned the heat in the cab. Back in 1984 I managed to spend several hours in the cab of SP 4449 as she was laying over in Houston on her way back west from the New Orleans Worlds Fair. (I didn't get to run her though. <g>) I estimate that I sweated away between 5 and 10 pounds just standing there talking with the crew. I could only imagine what it must have been like working a steam engine for a full shift during the summer in these parts!Take care,Henry
