Hello, today I saw an intersting thing. 2 Dash 9's were coupled together Reversed and the head one had its door at the front of the train wide open! It is interesting as the weather was about +10C and there was no freight with the train, thus it was probably moving from the Railway staiton to the Freight yards, also it wasn't moving slowly either... A good explanation is air conditioning, but is that what's supose to happen? Dosen't the engineer have some sort of an inner cooling system and is opening the front door at speeds of 50km + considered safe? Explain to me please. By the way, the loc is CP and it happened in Winnipeg as it was moving from the Train Staiton to the Fort Rouge Yards.---------------------------------------------------------------------- If you know a place where I can download Visual Basic, please inform me at ussrtrainsim@narod.ru

I believe Dash 9's have 2 doors. One outer and one inner. Most likely one of the crew members forgot to close the outer door when coming into the locomotive.Jordan
If they were reversing, it was probably left open intentionally so the engineer or conductor could do the switching or whatever they were doing. It does seem a bit peculiar for an AC4400 to be reversing like in a switching movement. Myeh. Oh look, my 800th post *~þHÃt*Rat~**~classic american playa~*

Most likely, when the crew entered the loco, they went through the nose, and didn't pull the nose door hard enough to lock it shot. There iS another door between the nose and the actual cab.Or....maybe....one of the crew took a big stinky dump (the toilet's down in the nose) and the nose needed some airing out....
You're right, its probably for the air conditioning. As for the door it is what you call "at the nose". As alreafdy mentioned going 50km/h on the main track between a yard and a train staiton is not considered Reversing.
