it is mainly concerning people that have dial up, loading up 300 different gifs, text and sig pics can take up to 5 minutes, the train gifs post in the train simulator forum takes a good 2-3 minutes to fully load...this also means less load on the servers.. which means the forums will be faster...much faster.

I have dial up, and I don't have any problems. anywyas, I had a Idea earlyer, if people would take their .gif trains and make them all one pic, you can reduce the load time. I did this when I hd the TGV in my signiture.

No. Despite the fact that I use a dial-up connection on a regular basis, I don't mind those cheery little locos and so forth zipping about the bottom of posts. I can be patient, although our friends in metered access lands might not be.

The Use of Train Gifs is Permitted, however only Static consists only. This means around no more then a few cars/locomotives. An example such as this Get Rid of the Train Gifs? – image 223 Is ok. The allowed limit is One Line.Scrolling Gifs are not allowed on Train-sim.com. If complaints via forum or email continue, train gifs of any kind, static/non static will not be permitted.This is what the new rules regarding train gifs are.

Come on folks, lets just calm down a minute. The mods have been getting complaints because the gifs take a long time on dial-up. I have cable so it isn't me, but having been around since 300 baud, I can relate.These forums aren't about gifs anyway. Discussion and sharing information and experiences is what is important here. Forcing folks to wait 2-3 minutes because someone wants to have some pretty animation in their sig is kind of selfish on the part of the sig writer (IMHO).And besides, this isnt' *really* a democratic organization. Brian was kind enough to poll us for our opinions and the majority have spoken. But truth be told, he could have just made the ruling and told us all to like it or lump it.

Well, I don't see why because of 1, yes 1 person, that we should have them banned, but to be honest, 1 line of 5 gifs, takes a while, that's why I CONDENSED mine a LONG timeago to 1 single combined train. There are a few of us who do like the gifs and DO NOT abuse the RULES and we are getting punished because a FEW dialup users. To me, this isn't fair, no matter WHO it comes from.Thanks,

Hey Kev, I'll be sad to see them go if they do. To me it is a personal touch. Mine is a display of my intrests, and a actual CNW train. CBPRA/PRCBA. Guess I'll just have to post a nice small shot of a CNW train as my signature. Things sure are changing around here. I imagine for the several who still use dial-up it can be a pain. The way I see it, this "rule" (look at the rules of the forum) has been abused for a long time. It's not just train .gifs, but there are many who have just out of control banners. It smacks of disrespect to Nels and the moderators to blatently slap a giant banner on your posts when they have politely stated their wishes. Because others do it doesn't make it right.I'm not saying your banner is excessive, but posted this comment in replying to your post as you made an issue of fairness.-Jeff

Far as I'm concerned it seems that it's a bunch a kids raising all the squaller about the gif's in this post, As far as the language they use goes I'm not impressed. If it were'nt for the gracious attitude of the moderators in allowing them to stay they'd be long gone by now in other forums, I know because I see foul mouthed kids get banned quite frequently on a number of different forums.
There's a few here that certainly would not break my heart to see get thrown overboard.

I see very few adult members who post with such vulgarity, and I'll say this to those young people with attitudes such as they display here, quite a few want to become engineers for a railroad, continue to grow up with your attitude as you have now and you most likely will never make the grade, pop off to a training supervisor like you do here to someone and you'd be pickin out railroad tie splinters from your lower posteroir. Said what I want to say. John

Well, I honestly don't know what I think about all this. Makes me wonder about my sig, because though it's not a "scrolling" train .gif, it's still a "non-static" .gif (which I've had as my sig for what...a year and a half now?) I guess if it violates the rules I'll find out about it.However, it seems to me like things are becoming more and more dictatorial around here. Nothing against Macster personally, as I think he's a bright & mature guy, but I remember the heady days of *NO* mods other than Nels. Saddens me to think that there have been so many trolls sign up since then that we're up to *Insert number of mods here* people policing the forums. On the upside, the growth of Train-Sim as a hobby (or a way of life) leads me to believe this could be a continuing franchise for MS.I guess the decision has been made and whatever is said now doesn't make much difference. As a dial-up user who rarely gets a connection above 26400 I can say that the .gifs don't bog me down at all. This post, for example, took me about 45 seconds to completely load. You can't even read the initial POST in a thread in 45 seconds....let alone the entire thing. The time it takes to load is somewhat irrelevent, because it takes far more time to read the topic and replies than it ever does for us dial-up users to load the page. I don't mind following rules, but within the past few months on this site it seems as though people (including myself) are walking on eggshells. So long as somebody doesn't use a racial or ethnic slur or anything along those lines I personally don't think our speech here should be regulated. Terribly sorry if it "offends" you to be told you suck, but that's the breaks. If this is how sensitive we are these days, I REALLY hope I don't run into anybody on the golf course....they'd probably end up suicidal. Seems to me we'll be losing something that gave just a little insight into our personalities. Guess the wants of the few outweigh the wants of the many. very well said..there never has been a compliant about your .gif kinda cool how it just pops out of nowhere. The main problem is just isn't bandwidth, but more along the lines people having to edit out a "page" of nothing. I know Nels has said he hovers around the site, but would like to see him more around then usual, I usually handle 70% of what goes on around here, and get a mass amount of email from users that would like to see improvements, alerts and other things. I don't mind that at all, it goes with the "job"*btw, thanks for the compliment* After a while, getting between 20-30 emails a day about somebodying flaming something, somebody posting a nude picture *just happened in the Traction Forum and other various things. It takes alot and I usually make snap judgements after a while. Some bad, some good, it really all depends on the situation... I would like to see a better presence of the mods and return of emails that I send out *granted if they get to them* I know Nels runs another website *Flight-sim.com* But i don't want to feel like i'm the only one "guarding" the website. But of course, there is only so much a person can do.

Without dropping the fire on the tracks,whilst rocking the firebars,I'm of the opinion that the original post,and the subsequent discussion,demonstrates the indecision of the forum moderators.Or perhaps a natural uneasiness to cut back on member's perceived freedoms. The "Forum rules" state quite clearly that freedom of speech etc,as applied to normal situations,does not exist,and that modification to the rules can be applied,arbitrarly by the mods,as and when required(or not required?).Thus this quasi-democratic "get rid of the Gifs?" question need not have been posed at all,as the concept of posting it is redundant under the existing rules.I didn't care one way or the other about gifs,as I have no problems with page loading etc.,even as I'm "dial-up",but if pushed would vote "no",as a convoy has to travel at the speed of the slowest vessel.
I find it sad that younger members have resorted to what is classified as swearing whilst defending their opposition to the rule change.However by posing the initial question,the route was opened,unintentionally,for such an argument to happen.Some recognition of this possible result was recognised by the request for a straight "yes\no?" answer to be posted.A straight "gifs are banned from (date)",would have sufficed,and yes,probably would have attracted criticism in the shorter term,but at least it would have demonstrated consistency in forum rule making within the constraints of "no free speech".My comments will I trust be taken as constructive criticism,and not as an attack on the moderators,who I feel have to make the best of a bad job at times.
They may also be seen as being redundant,in the present situation,as the decision to remove gifs has now been taken.
However they may be relevant if a similar decision is pending for future forum rules change.

Never mind - read the original post, post the answer, then read everything in between and realise I have missed the closing date of the competition.I will just say the language from some of the younger members borders on the appalling sometimes. Certainly wasn't happening 12 months ago. I feel the moderator(s) are far too tolerant and should strip posts out of threads where necessary. As has been said before both on this site and others, the owner of the site is responsible for everything that is posted which is why we have moderators. The last thing any of us should want is complaints being made to Nels by irate parents after their offspring have learned new words.Other sites have been closed down in the past because of the threat of legal action against something that appeared in a forum. I know this does not apply to this thread but we have to think before we push the button.

I used to have the '38 Hi chugging along, as one image. But when I had trouble loading it and others at home, I removed it... I didn't complain though. Maybe now pages will load halfway decent on my dial up. Thanks, Brian.EDIT: Oh, BTW, thanks for removing that gif poll last night. I was in the process of alerting it for foul language. I reported, and went back, and it was gone.. Must have had other complaints, I guess.

Get rid of them. There like a 3 year old kid, cute at first but after a while annoying. I find banners annoying also, guess thats why I just sign my name. And an observation, if this is a big issue with a person I would strongly suggust you need to reevaluate your priorities. This is a web site about computer generated trains, hardly something that is important. Its a hobby for Gods sake, not an issue of life and death.
