In Pine Bluff AR, it is the only place where two southbounds can meet each other and two northbounds can meet each other. Lets see if you can figure that out. These are not made up, the are the truth. Pine Bluff-I think it's like two diffrent raillines through the city, cant rember how it became to be but Union Pacific got a hold of two diffrent parrallel lines and were able to make one line northbound, and one line southbound only.Did You Know – image 1

RE: Did You Know

roigrande,
The deal on that is there were two primary lines in arkansas, the old MP which the UP acquired and the SSW/SP. They ran pretty much parallel to each other, no more than 70 miles apart through the whole state. In 1996 the UP merged the SP into it. And so due to the parallel lines a monopoly was created. So then the BNSF was granted trackage. But another line comes off the UP at Little Rock and runs south to Monroe LA. At Pine Bluff they run side by side through the downtown area. The SSW ran down the middle of 3rd St. in Pinebluff untill the late 80's and then they shared the same trackage as the UP. Now trains leaving Little Rock going to Monroe are classified as southbounds and they head towards Pine Bluff, and trains leaving Pine Bluff yard on the old SSW side headed towards Texarkana are classified as south. These trains head away from Pine Bluff. And when the two meet, they are both southbounds.
But traffic usually runs north on the old MP line from Texarkana to Dexter MO and runs south from Dexter MO, back to Pine Bluff and Texarkana, and on south into Texas. This was done to aoid 100's of meets daily. It can get boring sometmes they all run in the same direction, but we do have a few northbound trains, which adds a little variety.

>1. That the SP GS4 Daylight didnt have a steam whistle, but
>it had a horn. i didnt wanna beleive this one either. WRONG!!! It most certainly DID have a steam whistle...AND a horn.In fact, when it was touring the country on the American Freedom Train, Doyle McCormack even added a second whistle...so then it had two whistles and a horn to sound off. The extra whistle may even stillbe on the loco now.>2. In Pine Bluff AR, it is the only place where two

>These are not made up, the are the truth. Do you have any? What about Cajon Pass, California....where two UP trains heading from (for example) Devore Road up to Highway 138, on parallel tracks, are actually going OPPOSITE directions! If one is on the BNSF, it's eastbound -- if it's on the former SP, it's westbound! (Actually, in recent months, the terminology on the SP line has changed from east-west to south-north for some odd reason.)

RE: Did You Know

Shoskins
The horn/whistle combo was fairly common, right off the top of my head I can think of the C&NW's Pacfics for the 400's and the NYC's Niagra 4-8-4s,there are a number of stories of railfans attempting to get pics of the Niagras in their last days encountering diesel after diesel and deciding to wrap it up after the next train that the CTC is lined for clears and upon hearing a distant air horn, pack up as it's only another diesel only to see the Niagra roll by in their rearview as they drive away.Gary S

RE: Did You Know

oh i always thought that it was a horn only. well shucks. But I thought cajon was set up differently than that. I thought that north and southbounds meet instead of northbounds meetingeach other.
i should have said the only place in arkansas rather. But do both the hornand whistle blow at the same time?

RE: Did You Know

SSW
I would imagine that both could be used at the same time as they used 2 seperate source systems(steam/compressed air) so I would have imagined it would be up to the hoggers descretion.Gary S

Hey, I wonder If MSTS can be set up to have the bell do a horn instead, thus emulating one of these horn and whistles jobs?Did You Know – image 3

RE: Did You Know

Yes, MSTS most certainly CAN be set up to have a horn and a whistle. BUT -- you would then do without the bell.Go into your cab.sms and eng.sms files, and wherever the .wav for the bell is shown, substitute whatever whistle you would like. Then you'd press for the horn and for thw whistle.

RE: Did You Know

Cajon Pass has two routes. The "big" route (double-tracked) is the former AT&SF (now BNSF), upon which UP has had trackage rights from Daggett (just east of Barstow) to Riverside. The "smaller" route (i.e. mostly single tracked) was built by the Southern Pacific in the late 1960's -- and became UP in 1996 when they took over SP.So, a UP travelling from San Bernardino to Barstow (on the BNSF owned track) is traveling EASTBOUND. A UP traveling from West Colton to Mojave (on the UP, former SP) is heading WESTBOUND -- though tye are both facing the same direction for most of their travel up to the summit area of Cajon Pass -- and they are usually running within a couple hundred feet of each other.Perhaps a look at a map of the area -- with railroad lines shown -- might be in order to help you understand. (It's eady for those of us who live nearby the Cajon Pass and visit it frequently...)

RE: Did You Know

There used to be a switcher near here (old diesel) that had an old steam whistle. Literally running off of compressed air, it sounded much like an old steam engine. Really unnerving.
