I saw these two "foreign" locomotives in my hometown of Whitby, Ontario, yesterday and today. They were CEFX AC4400 #1019 (on the CP line) and UP C44-9W #9708 on the CN line. Shouldn't have been too surprised by the CEFX unit though, considering the CP has leases on most of the CEFX AC4400s. The UP Dash 9 was quite a surprise though.

I am relativly new to the Toronto area, having moved here 9 months ago from the town of Prescott, which is 220 miles east of Toronto. I have gone out nearly every day since I moved here, but have not seen much foreign power until now.(Except for the Soo engines on the CP line and the GEC-Alstom SD40-3s on the CN line, but those are quite common in my area, and aren't really "foreign" engines anyway). I can't afford to spend more than two hours at trackside (if even that) on weekdays though, so who knows what I'm missing. I havn't had acess to the CN line until the snow melted here 2 weeks ago (allowing me to ride my bike down there again), and there is usually not much worth photographing on the CP line between 4 and 6 PM, the time period I am usually out trainwatching.P.S. I have taken 580 rairoad photos since I got my digital camera back in July, and I average 3 photos a trip, so go figure.

Actually.. It depends which line you live on.
If you lived at a large yard town say Vaughn(Mac Yard CN) Seeing foreign power is common because all trains come in to that area. But living out on a section of mainline and seeing UP or BNSF power is rare and a special event. BTW I have never seen a CEFX AC4400 in person on CP but its commomly used on transcontinental trains.
Nice shots BTW.Seeing foreign power is starting to be more common up here but is still not anyware near the amount you see on US railroad rails. And if you know someone who works in a yard or runs trains from the yard then they can tell you about it and you will become acoustumed to it. But my dad works for the RR and when we go train watching its a big deal to see UP or BNSF power.
Even IC is rare! (maybe because he's in management and all he can see from his office is the endless flow of GO trains
Going to work with him is like a day of railfanning! I even bring my camerra (not the best shots but still fun!

But living out on a section of mainline and seeing UP or BNSF power is rare and a special event. I suppose that is the reason why I don't see much foreign power. I live about 25 miles away from the nearest yard (The closest one is the CP Agincourt yard in Scarborough). BTW, in case you haven't guessed, the lines I photograph are the CP Belleville sub (should be obvious from my signature), and the CN York sub. I Have to bike three miles over hilly terrain to get to the CN line though, so I can't go there as often as the CP line, which is litarally only a minute away by bike.

Sweet.
I live near the CN Oakville sub.
Right near Oakville yard. Just GP9's GMD1's and an SW1200 here.
Hardly any mainline freights through. The York and Bellivile subs are nice.
Do you ever go to Cherryroad crossing.
Theres a HUGE bridge there!Nice shot too

To answer your question Rob, no I have never gone to the Cherry Road crossing to watch trains. As for the other part,
>Just GP9's GMD1's and an SW1200 here.Out here, I see almost nothing but mainline freight. There is a local train that stops by a Dupont plant near the CN line, but that's about it. On the CP line, ther is a "loop" siding nearby, so I can often get shots of trains sitting still (like the CEFX unit).
There is also a daily auto train on this line, usually headed by 3 GP9s, but the lashup sometimes includes GP38s and GP40s. I wish I could see more locals out here

You should head out to cherry road one day nice place to go!Last time i was there i saw MLWs and stuff (in like 1993)if i see anyfreight on the oakville sub its a local. there are like 10 out of here a day.And all the mainline trains come through here during the nite.
Except 149- which will occasinally show up here around 1-3. once i saw it at 5. I see lots of GO,VIA and the yard switchers.Foreign Power in my area – image 6

For some more shots check out the topic "Oakville yard" & "149 thru Oakville".
http://forums.railfan.net/forums.cgi?board=SouthernOntThe freight goin over the bridge is 230- he runs niagra falls or buffalo to Oakville and 231 runs OAkville to Buffalo or NF.
He was running extremly late.
230 is supposed to be here around in the middle of the night. but is usually that late.

There's a great train spotting area west of CP's Markham yard, between Midland Ave and Brimley Rd. On the north side of Sheppard Ave, there is a shopping plaza that has a decent promontory at the back, nice and even with the RR overpass. A constant parade of trains well into the wee hours (even then about one every 10-15 min.)Lots of foreign power.

RE: Foreign Power in my area

We lease power to make up for seasonal/regional shortfalls. CEFX, SP, UP and Helm are the most common..Cheers
