It was a surprise to see this unit yesterday. It was assisting a Dash 9 pull a combination autorack / UPS stack train through Franklin Canyon (near Martinez, CA) yesterday afternoon.I had never seen one before.Quentin

RE: interesting cabless BNSF GP60B

Agreed! I didn't know BNSF kept them. I thought I saw an earlier post before about this locomotive, and someone making one, but I'll have to look again.

Yeah, they do look quite a bit better in ATSF paint.

What I cannot figure is why BNSF repainted them into the older Heritage livery, while the GP60M's I've been seeing (the old AT&SF 100's) are being painted into the newer Heritage II livery.

What exactly is the purpose of a cabless unit? I see they just provide extra traction/HP for the train but why do they have to have no cab?*~þHÃt*Rat~**~classic american playa~*

RE: interesting cabless BNSF GP60B

cheaper to build,
easier to maintain,
Lighter, there's a number of reasons. Mostly, the idea is using a B (booster) unit would allow one operator or crew to operate two engines, without tying up one of your cab units.
