Just recently, I've noticed that BNSF has been putting some ads on BC tv stations that are to appeal solely to British Columbians. I've never seen these ads up here before and was wondering if anyone knew of BNSF's motivation for doing so? Could it possibly be to pave the way towards a take over of BC Rail? (hopefully NOT! ) Or have other people seen similar BNSF ads across North America, appealing to their locals as well? Thanks, cdntrains

Hi DevinI've seen NS ads and others on some American stations, which I've never seen before. Perhaps it is just the railroads trying to secure some more business?Although a BNSF takeover is possible, it seems almost like a conspiracy theory to assume they are advertising prior to such a takeover.- Andrew

Hey Andrew, Ya maybe I have blown the whistle a little too soon? And yes, the securing of more business is certainly another possibility.btw, I have also seen the NS ads with the running horse too but the thing was, those ads had been directed on a much broader scale and were not specific to a particular region.. Maybe I'm just suffering from another case of overanalysis! Haha, I won't worry about it too much now. cdntrains

I've been seeing a lot of UP commercials lately, and anybody who tuned in to NASCAR's Busch Series might have noticed that UP was a sponsor, something that I have never seen before. I don't know why there's a sudden surge of advertising, probabley just looking for more business, but i thought that the railroads were doing fairly good on that end.

There's always room for expansion, Thus advertising, And in that note, I've seen a Acela commercial, a few UP ones, and one NS one, Not any BNSF thoughBNSF-can I have your investment/support?-ads – image 39

RE: BNSF-can I have your investment/support?-ads

The railroads have seen some traffice drop off in the last couple of years. I am sure the ads are trying to help shippers remember that there is another form of transportation besides trucks.BNSF taking over BC. I would say that is a good possibility. It would have been done by now if the US Government had not put a hold on things about two years ago. That hold has now expired. The only thing which would hold it back now is where BNSF gets the money to merg.Rail line to Alaska probably is not in the cards. According to Trains Magazine BNSF has about between $4 and $5 Billion in upgrades they need to do and have only identified where about $1.5 Billion can be obtained. It will be interesting to see what happens.Newton Kid

RE: BNSF-can I have your investment/support?-ads

Building a transcontinental line to Alaska has long been a dream of most people up here and continues to have strong support in the state government and the Alaska congressional delegation. It is also said the original Alaska railroad bill authorized funding for 1000 miles of track to be built in the state is still valid, as only about 500 miles has been built so far since 1914 when it was authorized. This would get the line most of the way from Eilson AFB (the current EOT), to just outside Whitehorse, YT. All that would be required after that then, would be the connection to Fort Nelson, BC. Probably never happen though. Environmental groups vigorously fight just about any kind of development up here. You can't even build 5 miles of road up here without the Sierra Club or Greenpeace filing some kind of lawsuit. Here's an interesting link for those interested:http://www.repjames.org/index2.htm

> It would have been done by now if the US Government had not put a >hold on things about two years ago. I'm not sure the US government has the authority to restrict mergers inside Canada. When CN proposed to BNSF they had to go through the US system since the BSNF trackage wasn't in Canada.I'm not 100% sure about this, but we did do a lot of in depth research on the CN/BNSF merger in one of my classes, which leads me to beleive that Canada would have to approve it.BC Rail wasn't on the block two years ago either, the sale is a pretty recent development. Mainly because a new government was elected. - Andrew

I've seen 2 different BNSF ad on our Global affiliate 1 about lumber and the other about cars, so my angle is that BNSF is trying to drum up some business for shipping goods South by train.Theodore Webster
