Summer Job In a Winnipeg Rail Depot – image 1

Hello, this summer I'm planning on a summer job (2 mounths) and want to work at one the city's two rail depo's, CN or CP. Since I'm only 15, my ability's are obiously limited. Does anyone have any idea for the kind of a job I should apply there for? As of right now I'm thinking of yardmaster ( counting freight cars, swithcing swithches, etc.). But who knows? Anyway, can someone help me? ----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have or know a place where I can find diagrams of Tatra and Russian streetcars, please inform me at ussrtrainsim@narod.ru

Not to be the bearer of bad news.......BUTForget it !!CN & CP constantly make layoffs of their own employees. When they do need people, they hire back their own !!I know this for fact as 2 people I work with in Winnipeg have dads that work for the railroad. On at CP Weston / one at CN Transcona.Beleive me I have tried for 3 years to get their dads to get me even a 5 hour a week job doing ANYTHING to get my foot in the door. ( I already have a full time job thats Monday to Friday and pays quite well, BUT CN / CP or VIA has always been a dream. )Looks like it will remain so, for quite sometime !!My advice, If you wanna work for the railroad......Look ahead to college or university !!For now ........... well as you are aware there's about 500 McDonalds in Winnipeg that will hire you over the summerGood LuckLaterTim Kent

Interestingly enough, I was just reading and pondering about comments made on the Railway Preservation News message board regarding youth and railroading. The focus of the subject is getting youth who are interested in railroading (particularly historical railroading) opportunities to become involved in railroad preservation. I think in a way this applies to modern-day railroading. A number of months ago, I read William Gould's book "My Life on Mountain Railroads". (Great book, good stories, and a lot of neat railroading history in Utah.) He got started (young) with doing odd jobs in a locomotive shop, and eventually worked his way into locomotive service as a student fireman. Too bad it's not that easy anymore on the big railroads. In the meantime, look around for a tourist railroad to work for. At 15 the most you can expect is to work in the gift shop or concession car. Big deal. Show them that you work hard no matter what. If you prove yourself as a good worker over the next few summers, you might find that the Trainmaster, Dispatcher, Chief Mechanical Officer, or whoever is in charge of operations, will transfer you to his department as a brakeman, switchman, or conductor. This happens on our railroad almost every year, and we still anticipate the day some of our concessions kids will turn 18 so they can become brakemen and conductors. Skills learned on a tourist railroad won't necessarily be the same skills you learn on a big Class 1, but it will get you started. Maybe from there you could go work for a shortline or local railroad. Whatever you do, don't give up just because you're not old enough.

I'm 16 and I'd also love to work for CN or CP doing ANYTHING but I did some research and I've got to be 18 to do it. That sucks royally because a job in the rail industry would be perfect for me. I wish I could do something but theres nothing rail-related in the Hamilton area that I can do... harumph... back to waiting...*~þHÃt*Rat~**~classic american playa~*

Hey allI thought I'd relate my own experiences here. I recently applied for a job with CPR as a seasonal labourer. I applied for the position that was advertised on CPR's website in early February. There were positions for labourers all across the country pretty much. You'll never get a cushy job to start, like a yardmaster, unless you have prior experience. You have to start out at the bottom. I've been successful in my application, the only thing I have left to complete is the medical and drug screening.I don't have any friends that put in a good word or anything, just walked in off the street.Just some food for thought.- Andrew
