Can anyone tell me what this train is/does?Seen on a siding in Pearl River, New York on the NJ Transit Spring Valley Line. Notice the shared trucks on the "gondolas". Charlie

Wow. They finally got around to motorizing that thing.Ok, here's what I know about it. (can't remember the company that owns it speficically) But it's a special designed articulated gondola. Basically, it was designed so a crane on treads (backhoe or magnet type) could run down the length of it without having to be lifted car to car.Normally, it's used by railroads that are demolishing lines. Basically the crane runs down the length of the thing, picking up ties, rails, tie plates, and other junk.
It's a self-propelled work platform towing a Slot- machine. The cars have overlapping floors and no forward or rear bulkheads so the backhoe can move the whole length of the train. It's used to clean out the ditches on each side of the tracks. It's made by Grex, I don't know if they sell them outright or lease them. Christopher
Thanks guys. Now I understand what this sign on the side means. (Sorry...best picture available...I was standing on private property below grade using a throwaway camera.) Charlie
