RE: Future Darwin Award Winner

What the??? Why is he doing that? Is he trying to smooth out that load, or just be an idiot in general?I mean, he's an idiot either way, but an idiot without a reason is worse.-Jeff

RE: Future Darwin Award Winner

Iv'e seen this operation several times. It's used as a means of unloading a railcar into trucks at a location where a below-track pit is not available. The backhoe is fitted with some special lugs on the stabilizer arms at the rear and on the front edge of the front bucket. The lugs are designed to fit over the top rails of the hopper car and hold the backhoe suspended above the load. The photos show the operation of getting the backhoe up on top of the car. Once he gets up there, the operator uses the back hoe scoop to unload the car into a truck parked alongside. The operator can move the backhoe along the length of the carr, too, and move along to the next car.

Yep, I've seen 'em up on hoppers in Terre Haute unloading like that. I just never knew getting the backhoe up there was so wild. I always assumed something lifted the backhoe up there. I wonder what the OSHA Risk Analysis looks like for that operation!

>>Getting it down must be a trick and half too,
ehh, thats the easy part, drive it off, then you just re-weld all the pieces/parts back on. Seems like it would just be easier to dig a temporary pit under the rails, and scoop the stuff out from under the car. MattFuture Darwin Award Winner – image 11

RE: Future Darwin Award Winner

The use of heavy equipment to unload hoppers is a common occurence on a line not far from where I live. It seems like theres always a string of hoppers or gondolas in the siding being unloaded like this. They use a set of ramps to get the machine up on top of the cars though. This method in the pics doesn't look to safe to me.
