I seem to recall seeing SP's Daylight train running through
the town I grew up in way back when (I lived south of San
Francisco)..I can recall my parent's fascination with it,
and also seeing passengers in the dining car as the train
came through town.Does someone in here know what the route was that the train
followed (I lived in Belmont Calif, about 20 mi south of SF..
I don't think the train stopped there, however). And thanks to those that made the daylight cars/engine.

Sep-06-01, 11:52 AM (EST) 1. "RE: SP's Daylight Train" The Daylights departed San Francisco and Los Angeles at 8:15am
daily and arrived at their terminals at 6:00pm. They stopped at San Jose, Salinas, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Glendale. Both trains had helper power over Cuesta grade with the southbound helper added at Santa Margarita and cutting out at Serrano or sometimes running thru to SLO. Northbound the helper was added at SLO and cut off at Santa Margarita. There was also a Noon Daylight that made all the same stops. It's train was smaller and didn't require any SLO helpers. No, they sure didn't stop at Belmont; in fact they usually went through there at maximum speed!Ken

Thanks! I knew someone in here would know..the memory
is rather fuzzy, but, yes, I do recall them zipping through
Belmont rather quickly..but the orange loco's/cars also stick
out rather clearly in the ol' noggin.

I should add that the SLO helpers were only used until the end of steam power. The diesel powered Daylights didn't require any helpers. Also, the Noon Daylight was discontinued in the early 50's as I recall.Ken Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
