"RE: E and F units" LAST EDITED ON Sep-06-01 AT 00:03 AM (EST)E unit, named for the first General Motors "streamliner" cab-units with Eighteen hundred horsepower(hence the "E" for 1800). They had two 900 HP switcher diesel Prime-movers powering four traction motors on two six wheel trucks:
F units, named for 5400 hp FT- first freight cab-unit(1939-45)usually in A-B configuration. From GM, One prime-mover, four traction motors, four axels.Developed through 1955 to the F-9:
This is an F-3, built 10/48

E7(A or B) - 2000 HP
E8(A or B) - 2250 HP
E9(A or B) - 2400 HPF3(A or B) - 1500 HP
F7(A or B) - 1500 HP
F9(A or B) - 1750 HPThe FT prototype was permanently coupled as a ABBA set with a total of 5400 HP.

Sep-06-01, 10:51 AM (EST) 3. "RE: E and F units" Actually the FIRST E Unit was the EA - produced in 1937-38 for the Baltimore and Ohio RR -HorsePower- 1800 That's where the "E" nomenclature stuck, even though the rest of E production, from E3A&B to E-7A&B were 2000HP-and E-8&9's were 2250 and 2400 HP respectfully.
The original FT was as Raildriver says, in A-B-B-A configuration.Tim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-06-01, 05:33 PM (EST) 4. "RE: E and F units" You guys sure know your locomotives I think there's also a simpler answer that's more useful in recognizing locomotives though. E units have 6 wheel trucks while F units have 4 wheel trucks. It's similar to the more modern SD series (6 wheel trucks) versus the GP series (4 wheel trucks). Of course, there are exceptions like the FL9 with a B-A1A wheel arrangement, just to keep things interesting.

Sep-06-01, 08:38 PM (EST) 5. "RE: E and F units" The original EA is preserved at the B&O museum in Baltimore, but without it's B unit. The original Baltimore & Ohio set (A-B) was used on the Capitol Limited between Chicago and Washington. I have an HO model of the set. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-06-01, 10:09 PM (EST) 6. "RE: E and F units" Just an addition to Nels' information: the E units were 6 wheel trucks, but only the outer axles were powered, effectively making them A-1-A's at both ends, and the truck wheelbase was 14' 1".
