Sep-02-01, 05:36 AM (EST) "Maris Pass " LAST EDITED ON Sep-02-01 AT 05:56 AM (EST)After doing Marias pass on MSTS, I just had to do the pass for real. It has been about 30 years since my last trip on over on SR 2. It is just great the way the roadway runs in tandum with the rails. My son and I just returned from a 4 day jaunt along ex- GN/NP/BN Main lines - Everett Wa to Shelby (SR 2)- down to Helena and back to Spokane and then back down the Coloumbia river (EX SP&S). Only four trains, all EB on the river route
. Traffic was fair on the ex-GN route but rather limited on the MRL from Helena West. First time I used a scanner to hear what was going on. Sure made a difference.Very smokey on the West side of Glacier National Park, we pasted by 3 different fire fighters camps. Lots of colors, ASTF Red and Silver, Blue and Yellow and a good mix of BN Green. There were even a few CP SD & GP units outside of Spokane. Nice trip...lots of photos (digital and 35mm). Will be doing some car repainting as I can get to them. Might try to get all the way to Duluth (sp) next year. LOL If your interesed you need to take your pixs before they are all repained over the the ugly punpkin c**p.Don

Sep-02-01, 10:09 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Maris Pass " !!!!! youre complaining about having brightly colored engines??? I guess its kinda bad but not compared to what happened on the Middle Division (PRR) and basically every other ex-conrail line I live near! because of the merger NS only got half of the conrail engines roughly, and they have cab signals- in other word eacdh train needs a conrail engine leading, and there werent enough to go around. So NS started getting all there C40-9Ws with cab signals, and now EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE 60 TRAINS A DAY ON THE MIDDLE DIVISION HAS BLACK C40-9Ws!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its sickening! weve basically stopped going there and gone to either less dense CSX lines or all the way out to New York and Ohio for heavily trafficed CSX lines. Sep-02-01, 06:20 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Maris Pass " It's kinda nics in central California. Wee see mostly Union Pacific Locomotives roll through. They really have a nice paint scheme. There is the ocassional Southern Pacific train, and Cotten Belt, but they arn't so bad. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-02-01, 07:17 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Maris Pass " Hey, I'd take a Black engine any day- Heck, I don't care if it's pink!! There aint a train around my parts for 50 miles in any direction and getting out to railfan is only a dream for me anymore- You guys quit griping about the colors of trains - be thankful you have some close by to see. A train going by is just as awe-inspiring in ANY color!- - Tim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-02-01, 07:41 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Maris Pass " Hey milwaukeefan, can you recommend any good spots in Ohio for me? Swanton and Bryan used to be my favorite hangouts, but things just haven't been the same there since the breakup, if you know what I mean. My GF and I stopped in Fostoria on Saturday Night a couple weeks ago, and the joint was jumpin'! Last time I went to Swanton absolutely NOTHING was happening, yet the scanner was chattering away with CSX traffic to the south. Hardly anything to be seen on the old NYC line, and yet the Lakeshore and Captitol Limiteds are STILL late as Hell. Go figure.Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-03-01, 11:02 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Maris Pass " Ok- here is the best spot in Ohio that we know of, and its only gotten better since the merger. Its called Attica Junction, and is located at the diamonds between the CSX to Chicago, which has at least 50 trains a day, and the NS ex PRR ( really ex they got it in the 70s) mainline between Bellvue and Columbus. But when the merger happened, this the line was single track as it had always been. But so many trains started going on it that they actually double tracked it last year! In fact, we watched some of it when we went there two years ago ( we go every year, 10 hour drive kinda long) So now Attica Junction has about 90-100 trains a day, and many are in daylight. CSX even has the Capitol Limited on it. The area where you sit is kinda large, and its right in front of the diamonds- but there is a giant transmission tower behind you that NS or CSX put up, but it doesnt interfere with everything. When the sun switches sides of the track, all you do is go down a little to the NS and you can cross on a private road, and sit at the other side. Another advantage is that you are right near NS Northbound signals, so you always know when somethings coming on them. If you want directions I could get them.
