I have noticed FREDs on the rear engine of several distributed power unit coal trains sitting at the East East Leavenworth siding in Missouri over the last several weeks. I had never noticed them before.I know a FRED is used to provide feedback on brakeline pressure at the rear of the train and now in the last few years, at least here in the US, dump the brake air from the rear. However, my understanding was that the rear engine was electonically coupled to the front engine and normally did everything the front engine did. This included setting the brakes and recharging them. If the rear engine can do that, why the FRED?
