Metro North RR to pull some M-1 units out of service – image 1

Yep...Metro North had to pull approximately 70 M-1 units out of service because of fuse or traction motor blowout problems, due to the snow storm that blasted through our territory this Monday. This, of course, means that trains will be shorter by either 1 or 2 cars per train, and of course, means a BIG crowd on each and every single train. Now in the long run, this means that the RR is running with 518 EMUs for at least a month. Bad....very VERY bad news.I bet you're wondering what we did on Monday with these units -- they were not used at all, but rather, the P32ACDMs (I don't have an exact count as to how many we've got, unfortunately) along with the entire fleet of Comet IIs (Shoreliner) Oy vey, what a mess! I'll be glad when we get out M-7s (LIRR has some of 'em in service already, btw)Stuart D. Guberman

Ouch! Let;s hope that the M-7's get there soon. Are you sure that only m-1's or the M-2's gonna go to? I wonder what happened in '96-NHtrain

Nope...just M-1s.What happened in '96 was that (unknowingly at that time) the RR left the EMUs in service after the snow began to pile up and almost the entire fleet of EMUs were taken out of service for fuse and traction motor blowouts. As for the M-7's I haven't heard anything about their MNRR delivery yet...Stuart D. You know Stu I think the PRR had the same problem with the GG1s in the '50s IIRC, Don't know for sure as I was living along the NH then but read about it. This problem is, IIRC, what led to the moving of the Air Intake Grills up to the top sides of the long hoods... Instead of down low where it was built... I don't recall how many G's got this mod... But I think it was quite a few...
The funny thing is, it sounds like that particular piece of North American Rail Road history was lost and the current contractors have no knowledge of it... The Shops/vendors directly involved were Altoona/Wilmington/Westinghouse/GE... Guess you got the M7s from "Brand X"... Sometimes you get what you pay for... and overseas vendors (Not Bombardier since they SHOULD know better) make assumptions about North American Rail Road conditions that turn out to be disasterous... But allow them to save money on the Bid...Chuck Schneider

Not only were the GG-1's modified with the higher air intakes due to sucking in snow from down low, but many of the Metroliner MU's were also modified by moving the electrical gear from underneath to the rooftop humps. The M-7's, BTW, are being made by Bombardier......

So far Bombardier has only made the M-7. Hard to belive they started out as a snowmobile company in canada in '46 -NHtrain

That's correct. The M-7 is being built by Bombardier. The M-1 all the way through the M-6 (odd # except the M-5 is MNRR, and even number <2, 4 and 6> are all CDOT and are equipped with BOTH 3rd rail shoes AND pantographs for operation on the NEC from just north of Mt. Vernon West all the way to New Haven.) were all made by Budd at various times.Stuart D. Guberman

You're right about the M-4s being built by a Japanese company: they're Tokyu along with the partnership of Kinki/Nippon Sharyo. The M-6s are made by Morrison Knudsen.
