Just read about this on my newspaper's web site. Apparently, a 56-year-old man with a known history of mental disorders threw a canister of gasoline into a subway train in the South Korean city of Daegu, and then lit it up with his cigarette lighter. The man was quickly arrested by the police, though his motives have yet to be determined. However, officials say there is no reason to believe he might have been involved with any kind of terrorist organization.

I've seen pictures from inside the train, made a real mess of it whatever he did. Reports down here indicate that he threw a milk bottle full of petrol (which he had just lit) into the train.Projects

Tragic story,200+dead now.
I'm surprised though of the "silence" being shown on this forum, regarding this event, considering the great outpouring of grief over the shuttle, and recent Australian train tragedy.

RE: Huge underground fire in South Korea kills 134

Well Larkie since you are intimating that we are all prejudiced then why don't you as our self appointed conscience express all our grief for us?
I for one was horrified.... Just like I was over the Tokyo Subway Nerve Gas Attack.... And the Australian fires once I comprehended that they were not a simple brush fire gone awry As I am sure most others on here were... Last I checked the Aussies weren't "wogs" as your countrymen have traditionally called the Japanese and Koreans. So pi$$ off on the smarmy accusations of prejudice! Any of the rest of you ever notice how prejudiced the British and Scots are? How they like to preach to us in the US about our "Racial Prejudices".... Reality check, ask an Indian or Pakistani who lived under the "Raj" or shortly there after about British "Non-Predjudice".... People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!Like it or not those incidents, horrible as they are, didn't have the same impact on us as the Challenger or 9/11 did... Those happened in our back yard... The Tokyo and Korean and Australian disasters are far away... That's just human nature... Chuck Schneider

A wog being the common cold? Must be a Western Australian term or something. Might have to head over to the ABC's website and see what they say. Projects

All respect, but an unschooled American isn't an Australian, schooled or not. And in Australia, the term wog might be different to what the poms (English) call a wog. The movie "Wog Boy" wasn't that about a Greek kid going through school in Australia? I believe I actually got to talk to the star of the movie while in year five at school too.Projects

Boweavel Sir,With all due respect to you.IMHO, Certain members of this community positively delight in getting in "Cheap Shots" at Americans and things American...I made up my mind not to tolerate it any longer...So I respond to posts like the above now....Note the subliminal message, inferring we are racist, about how there was no interest in disasters not here in America! Not true! But I note in checking a few web sites like the BBC an France Presse (??? I hope I got that right) these disasters got very little play there either....Chuck Schneider

Italians were called "Wops", stemming from the fact when many immigrated to the USA in the early part of the 20th century and arrived at Ellis Island (NY) those without all the necessary documentation were tagged with a card that said "WOP" meaning Without Papers.

RE: Huge underground fire in South Korea kills 134

Chill my friend this was not an attack.FWIW, Australia is referred to as Oz up here in the states!
I've heard it referred to as Oz in Australia by Australians many years when I was there with the USN. I think we got it in our lexicon courtesy of Paul Hogan/Crocodile Dundee, Steve Irwin/The crock hunter, Xena/Warrior Princess and Farscape/The Sci-Fi Series to mention a few of your cultural exports to us. However, I was referring to the British form of WOG...
And to the British Author Rudyard Kipling's use of the term...I note none of the guys from the UK had any trouble understanding me.
Or they didn't try to rebut me.If you don't study the History of the UK/British Empire and "English Literature" at least a little bit down there what is it you do study? Just curious not an attack. We are forced into a passing acquaintance with them up here, unless you are in one of our famous failing inner-city schools. I just assumed, yes I know what it means, that since you were part of the British Empire a couple of hundred years longer than we were there would naturally be more "English" Content in your educational system.

Huge subway fire in S Korea kills 134 – image 16

Watch it, they aren't "brush fires" they're "bush fires", but very tradgic, four people dead, and around 500 homes totally destroyed, leaving thousands homeless. A couple of years ago, we had really nasty bush fires right on Christmas day, but the people who were effected are now back up on their feet because of the Australian nature. Then on the last day of January this year, seven people lost their lives.Only a few days later, I found out at 5am (was playing MSTS until all hours and watching a movie) via a "special news broadcast" about Columbia, where again seven people died. Then to learn about South Korea (along with Zimbabwe where 42 people died in a head-on between a freight and a passenger), it is becoming a really bad year for rail. A total of (to my count) 183 people have died on trains in this year alone, and we're only in the second month of the year!Columbia, although half a world away hit me hard, and a lot of other people I know. I feel sorry for to everyone who has lost a loved one this year.We (Australian's) are by no means "wogs", the term 'wog' in Australia is used as a slang term by which to address people who have moved to Australia from the middle east (usually) however isn't in common use. Wogs however from time to time will call us (born and raised in Australia) skippy's, which is fine as long as no-one takes offence to the terms. I do however take offence to ANYONE Australian being called a wog by "outsiders", and normally take offence when an Australian calls a fellow Australian a wog too!
Before I ramble on too much, I'll shut-up, and hope I've stayed on topic. Projects

FWIW, Bush isyet another term possibly unique to Australia/Oz.
Up here in the States we have no proper noun "The Bush".
Fires of that ilk if they are mostly in low hanging shrubbery are "Brush Fires"... If there are a lot of trees, usually forested, they are called "Forrest Fires".... Up here anyway.Chuck Schneider

Much more tragic then the 34 killed in a stampede at a nightclub in Chicago last weekend.Lets see, If I apply the gun control logic to both tragic events, there should be screaming and massive protests by liberals to their governments for milk carton control, (used to throw the flaming gasoline), cigarette lighter control, (used to light the gasoline in the milk carton), flammable liquids control, (the gasoline that resulted in all of the casulities), and mace control - in the case of the Chicago event which started the panic at the packed night club. After all, if such controls were in effect, such a mass murder would never happen.Of course, those same liberals will use the excuse of the mental illness in defending the act of this insanely evil individual who is responsable for the deaths of the 134 who were going about their daily activities totally unaware of his threat to their safety.SRV Ron

I wonder if the same hilarity will permeate rail topics like this if a perfectly sane Al Qaeda terrorist decides to try a similar exercise,on one of the US\UK underground systems with nerve gas etc?If all airport passengers are searched prior to flying, then why not extend this to all other forms of mass transit?
I realise that such measures won't be taken, because only an aircraft can be turned into a human cruise missile,as shown by 9\11.

RE: Huge subway fire in S Korea kills 134

Stopped for a train today carrying the following labeled tank cars. Butadyene Momoner stablized, Sodium Hydroxide, Trichlorosilane, Acrylnitryle, and many other hazardous stock feed chemicals for Dow and Dow Corning. Such chemicals travel every day along this route in numbers from 50 to 100.Last month, a fully loaded propane tank truck crashed through a guardrail and exploded in a huge fireball on the railroad tracks below in Flint when the driver died from a heart attack. Part of that overpass will be closed for months. There used to be double bottom tanker trucks in Michigan, they hauled two trailers full of gasoline, until one exploded after slamming into an expressway overpass and destroyed it.The raw materials for a terrorist attack travels daily on the rails and highways of the world. It's another reason why railfans and professional truck drivers are being harassed daily by the authorities.Oh, the nerve gas thing has happened before in Toyko, the attack was carried out by some environmental extremist cult several years ago.SRV Ron

I understand the harrasment issue over railfanners, truckers etc,but in my opinion a "dirty" truck would be the greater danger.Regarding the sarin nerve gas attack in Tokyo, extremest yes, environmentalist no,religious yes.The Aum Shinrikyo(Supreme Truth) sect was set up in Japan and gained religious status in 1989.The "master" was one Shoko Asahara, and amongst their beliefs was that the USA would start WW3 by attacking Japan. They lost that religious status in Aug1995,after the attack on Tokyo on 20Th March 1995.see http://www.fas.org/irp/congress/1995_rpt/aum/index.htmlI am one of the few "legal" gun owners in the UK,but no handguns\rifles are allowed by law, only shotguns, maximum two shots,so I have some sympathy with your "gun control lobby" remarks.
The hoods and gangsters however still have full access to "Illegal" weapons,so overall gun crime keeps on rising.Sorry for drifting off topic, but some environmentalists are good, others well meaning, and some plain silly, and all tolerated in a democracy, but none were linked to that Tokyo subway mass murder attack.

RE: Huge subway fire in S Korea kills 134

Ironic how the government, in their quest to protect their citizens from themselves, have disarmed the law abiding ones, but failed miserably to disarm the criminal element, which no longer have any fear of those they prey on.History continues to repeat itself all over the world. Where guns are outlawed, the outlaws will be the ones with the guns who will prey on the defenseless law abiding ones and have little fear that anything will happen to them.I see that you did your homework on the Shinrikyo cult. I understand that Shoko Asahara hadn't bathed in years. The authorities that arrested him were easily able to find his hiding place just from the smell.I believe that one of their goals was to reduce the worlds population for the sake of the environment and the subway attack was just a test of bigger things to come.SRV Ron
