Can someone help me on this area? I am trying to find out the differences between the SD70s operated by various railroads..
Here's how I think it should be:SD70 (standard cab): Illinois Central, Norfolk Southern
SD70I (widecab, conmventional control stand): Canadian National
SD70M (widecab, computer screens): Southern Pacific, Susquehanna, CSX
SD70M (widecab, analogue instruments): Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern
SD70M (widecab, FIRE): Union Pacific
SD70MAC (widecab, computer screens): BNSF, Alaska Railroad, CSX
Anyone forgotten? Also, what kind of cabs do BNSF's SD75Is and SD75Ms have? Normal widecabs with desktop controls and computer screens like BNSF's SD70MACs, normal widecans with analogue instruments like UP's SD70Ms and ATSF's C44-9Ws or widecabs but conventional control stands like the Canadian SD75s?
Does anyone have an SD75M cab shot?

There are also many of the standard cab SD70's in Conrail. Of the standard cab varieties, all of course have control stands, and I'm pretty sure the Conrail and NS ones have computer screens on top. The IC control stand is very strange--no computer screens in the ones I've seen, but there are displays that look like LCD (think calculator screen) screens.

YEP!The Westrail Q class, also a SD70 according to my many books. Next time, do some research and look up all your SD70's, world wide. Then again I might be wrong. Projects
- 421 class Public Transport Commission of New South Wales diesel electircs:
Fuel & Air tanks - 99%
No. 2 end - 88% (Pilot details and number boards/headlights need to be added)
No. 1 end - 05% (Headlight & handrails are on)
Sides - 33% (frame work is up, about 1/2 of panels on)
Overall - 16.0%
- 422 class New South Wales Government Railways diesel electircs:
On the drawing boards for a project after the 421's.
Overall - Not official

The Q class and 90 class are actually slightly different locos, they have different model numbers, however any changes between the two classes must be tiny, the engine, traction control and stuff like that may be the reason though. Projects

I think the picture speaks for itself, although isn't is possible that they were re-fitted after that picture was taken?Projects

RE: Operators of SD70s and cab layouts

In that case that would mean they were retrofitted _from_ desktops _to_ Control stands as CN isn't very fond of desktops AFAIK

Actually I'm quite sure CN SD70i's were specially ordered from EMD with the normal stands. I know a guy in the know on this so I'll confirm this when I get a word with him.*~þHÃt*Rat~**~classic american playa~*Operators of SD70s and cab layouts – image 9

RE: Operators of SD70s and cab layouts

To the best of my knowledge from photos i took in London and other releavant crapola:The SD70's that NS, CR and IC own have standard control layouts and computer screens. The SD70M's that were part of the GM Leasing fleet and the demonstarators had the computer screens. The SD70M's that Southern Pacific and NYSW owned i have no idea because the photos are misplaced. The SD70I's that CN have have standard control cabs without computers. All prehistoric stuff. The SD70M's that UP have all have analog layouts and desktop controls. They opted for this because the SD70M is really a better SD40-2The SD75I's that CN Rail have are perhistoric and the same as the SD70ISD75's that were part of BNSF's fleet (except the first 50) have computer control screens. The Ragged they come and the ragged they kill

RE: Operators of SD70s and cab layouts

Here's an inside look of a UP SD70M #4306 taken at the Portola Railroad Museum. UP had loaned them the locomotive for making an equipment move to a rail festival since the lead unit had to be equiped with cab signals. The first shot is taken from the cab of an SP GP9 while we were waiting for the SD70 to be turned on the baloon track. Next is a picture of Mary and the Radio. Mary is the device that comunicates with FRED (the thing that replaced the cabooses). After that is a picture showing the air guages, spedometer, and barely visible to the left is the ammeter, plus there is the array of idiot lights across the top. Finally is a picture of the controls including the reverser, combined power handle, and brake valves. The buttons to the right of the clipboard control the sanding valves, bell, horn and the alerter. Of note is the fact that the reversing handle is missing, unattended locomotives are never left with their reversing handles in place, at least they're not supposed to be. Anyways though enjoy the pics.
