RE: Cab Forwards

To protect the crews from the smoke build-up in long tunnels. Cab first = smoke behind. That's the simple version.

RE: Cab Forwards

I'll second the observation that the 'Cab Forward' idea, at least in the US, was developed to avoid smoke problems. The Southern Pacific designed and used the 'Cab Forward' series on the Donner Pass route, which has numerous tunnels and snowsheds. On other routes, the SP used conventional rear-cab locomotives.

RE: Cab Forwards

I would imagine visibility in general was a lot better. Even when you're not in a tunnel, smoke can be a nuisance. Probably would be like sitting in a switch engine with the cab on one extreme end (or something similar to that.) It's not often you can look out the window and actually see your own coupler, as well as what's on both sides of the track. - dispatcher618

RE: Cab Forwards

Cab Forwards were also used between Los Angeles and Bakersfield. I've talked to guys who used to try and pace the Cab Forwards along side San Fernando road here in the valley. If you tried real hard, you could go from Burbank to just beyond San Fernando and never leave the side of the engine.

Not completely true. The Southern Pacific's primary power on the Modoc line were the AC-1, AC-2 and AC-3 cab forwards, numbers 4000 to 4048. In the late 1940s the rail on the line was upgraded from 75 and 85 pound rail to 132 pound rail. After this occured 10 AC-9s, 3801 -3911, were transfered from service on the Rio Grande Division to work the Modoc. Also in this same time period the older AC Cab Forwards were replaced by the newer heavier 4100 - 4200 series as they were bumped off regular mainline freights by the new diesels.Edit:
The other primary steam power they used on the line were C-8 to C-10 consolidations.Regards,

RE: Cab Forwards

Monon or Mopac (I forget which of the two) used cabforwards from SP. Thing is, they ran them "conventional" style with the cab beside the tender.

Beside the tender! Oh' I can imagine how it looks, Bleah! Cab-forwards have been a mind basher for my brain in ages. They look strange, but they still got their special charm.BTW: What happend to that crane? You asked me if I wanted it and I said yes, what happend? But, no need to rush.

RE: Cab Forwards

Another thing. Try going down a winding mountain track with a Big Boy, a 700000 ton frieght train behind you, going 40 MPH, you're squinting ahead and you can almost, but not quite see the teenagers close ahead kicking rocks along the tracks......
This story kinda explains why the SP tryed the experimental Cab-forward.-Hovertrain

RE: Cab Forwards

I think a couple of extra zeros got in there. Even at 200 tons per car that's 3500 cars, and at 50 foot per car ,over 33 miles. I Don't think so.
