I heard on the radio that there was an electrical fire at Penn Station today. Amtrak doesn't seem to have anything about it, so I assume it was a LIRR car or engine. If anyone knows what exactly happened, please post here.

RE: FIRE AT PENN STATION!
It was in a restaurant on one of the restaurant/shopping mezzanines (LIRR and Amtrak and NJT all have their own mezzanines now...about a year ago, Amtrak and NJT shared the main Amtrak concourse...), but Amtrak and LIRR was affected, as was the entire 7th Avenue subway line. NJT at the time I heard the report come over the wire at GCT (at about 1635 Zulu) hadn't had any delays or cancellations due to the fire.Stuart D. A low hanging cable hit the third rail on track 21(I think that's the last track??? Anyways, it caused a lot of smoke however it was contained rather quickly. It did cause a whole evacuation of Penn Station which made nightmares for people trying to get home and ruined a lot of plans for peoples Valetines Day. Then again, that's just a small price to pay for not a single person getting hurt. Timeline: 3:45-3:49- Fire starts on Track 21 3:50- Total evacuation of Penn Station 6- People started to be let back into Penn Station 6:30- NJT and Amtrak trains begin to run 8:30- LIRR trains begin to runThere were a few nervous people who thought it was something more than a fire, thankfully it wasn't.Chris Lee Train Artisan

That's what I get for listening to heresay...grrrr.And yes, Track 21 is THE last track at NY Penn -- it's used solely by LIRR. Despite that, yes, catenary is installed for pantograph operated engines.Stuart D. Guberman Chief Operations Officer Atlantic Coastal Railway http://www.atlanticrail.com
