Damn that is a strange loco! Guess it would grow on you but at least it isn't a box on wheels, it has a curved nose. Interesting.... Projects

120mph if I remember correctly, would look ODD to see that thing going by at 90mph..... I wonder what the 0-60mph is very the F59PHI... I know the F59PHI gets up to 60mph in 24seconds with the Talgo set, 79mph around 47second range, 90mph near alittle over a minute... using 2 locomotives of course.

RE: Caltrains MP36PH-3C

Not sure of the actual specifications....I lie 1.8 track miles from the Tustin Metrolink station, and right at the edge of my residnce is a talking detector. Listening on the scanner, I've heard Metrolink F59PHI's pulling four Bombardier coaches (109,000 lbs. each) start from the station and hit the detector at up to 76 miles an hour.Amtrak F59PHI's, 2.4 miles out of Santa Ana station with five Surfliner cars (unknown weight) are hitting the detector almost always at 76 miles an hour as well.In both situations, track is level between the station locations and the detector. Now if you wanna really see speed, west/northbound Surfliners leaving Irvine come down the hill (it's downhill from Irvine to Tustin stations, about a 50' drop in four miles) and the Surfliners are doing, well, let's say -- the 90mph speed limit and then some. I(I just hope nobody important listens to that detector; I have heard some obscene speeds for Surfliners coming down the hill. One of these days a speed tape is gonna get pulled and some engineer is gonna cry.)

Sure does look like a real "high stepping" unit....reminds me of the special GP39-2's that were built for Kennecott Copper up in Bingham, Utah. Those units were built with extra bottom clearance -- traction motors even mounted in a special way somehow -- to clear chunks of rock, etc. on the tracks in that huge open pit copper mine.

RE: Caltrains MP36PH-3C

Actually there has been some discussion of these on Train-Orders and they consensus I get there is they are behind schedule on acceptance and have a long laundry list of problems at this time...
If any of this is accurate it sounds like another DM/DE30 fiasco in the making....Kit Bashing GM locos in 12" to the Foot scale from parts manufactured or re-manufactured by suppliers other than GM is kinda risky it appears. Other than the MK F40-3s which are almost completely made from reconditioned GM parts there appears to be problems doing this.... The prime mover for these beasts is IIRC a GM 645E3 built from replacement parts manufactured by GE not GM...This should get interesting as time goes on.Chuck Schneider
