RE: Wvlatecab_atsf.

It is a caboose. A Santa Fe wide view cuppola caboose. If you download it, be aware that it has, IIRC, a nasty bounding box problem.Brad Meyer

>Has anyone fixed the WVcab box problem - or can they i
>noticed it too I fixed it in my trainset using bboxedit (which is in the library here). So far as I know, no one has corrected the original .zip file in the library. IIRC the problem was that the bounding box was to wide and would "crash" against a consist on the next track.I am a frim believer in the notion that the individual MSTS user is ultimately responsible for the condition of his/her trainset. The tools are available to tweak eng/wag/sd files so the physics, of which the bounding box is technically a part, are as the user wants them to be. Note, there is a difference between "fixed" and "what the user wants them to be". There is no one "right" set of values for any of the parameters involved. Some folks want, for instance, the coupler break values set at such and such. Others want a different value. I repeat, there is no one "right" way. I like the bottom of my bounding box at lest two feet off the rails. Others have different views. Based on my little more then half year of d/l-ing locos and wagons for MSTS, I can say for almost a certainty, that if you accept everything you download "as is" you will have continuous minor frustrations. Newer units (in terms of when they were uploaded) tend to be less trouble then older ones, but even the newest can have errors. If you take the time to run your new equipment through bbox edit and the test functions in ConBuilder (also available here) as soon as you get them in the trainset, you will _know_ the values are as you want them and your simming will be the better for it.Brad Meyer

RE: Wvlatecab_atsf.

>I agree to a point but the model builders should work these
>problems out If one third of the community wants one set of values, another wants a different set, and the remainder still a third, how does the modeller/skinner "work that out"? IMO, if I'm getting freeware, it seems a tad presumptuous for me to say what the providers of that freeware ought to do. Also futile. I'm grateful as hell for what they do provide. If this was, say, N guage instead of MSTS, and someone gave me a few dozen engines and pieces of rolloing stock, I darn sure wouldn't start bitching about how the cars were weighted or what sort of trucks they had.If modelers/skinners want to build great .wag/.eng/.sd files that great, but if their are really 3d artists looking for a place to perform and don't care so much about those files, that's fine too. It is their hobby (and bliss), not mine. If I decide that I absolutely have to have that 48ft Tobasco tanker (hmmm . . .), I will take responsibility to see that it works as I want it to. Just because I want it doesn't mean he is required to build it to my specifications.Another issue: Take Enocell -- if he isn't the best around at what he does, he'll certainly do untill the best hits town. A substantial portion of my freight cars are his creations. Several weeks ago, he did a set of gondolas (he did several actually) and when I d/l'ed it and ran them through my normal check out prior to use, sheezam!, two or three of the files had errors. Enocell put a fix in for them a few days later. He was tierd. It was late. He was trying to get the set out for someone. Something like that, I forget the exact details. The point is, if Enocell can make a mistake like that, think of what kind of mistakes can be made by mere mortals.Another issue:Many of these cars were up loaded before such things as the bounding box problems were fully understood. I think there are many variables in the .eng/.wag files that are still not fully understood. The caboose in question was one such. Now if the original autor doesn't want to correct it, or give permission to correct it, it is not going to get corrected. That is his creation. We just get to use it. Now, if you want to fix your own personal copy of it, that's another thing, but don't try distributing the "fixed" version without the proper permissions.Brad Meyer

RE: Wvlatecab_atsf.

"If one third of the community wants one set of values, another wants a different set, and the remainder still a third, how does the modeller/skinner "work that out"?"The modeller/skinner (refered to as the author from here on in) should build the values which best replica that of the prototype (if it doesn't have a prototype then values which best replica that of the demensions of the model), taking into account that sometimes what you tell MSTS to do and what MSTS does are two different things.Sometimes, the odd person will want values which they think are better suited to the model OR which will allow the model to run on narrow lines (sometimes with cuttings or the like "crashing" into the model). However, if the author hasn't made the values anywhere near correct then most people will want to change them.Everyone is different, some people want "install and play" add-ons, while others will want install, then tweak the add-on then play with it. I myself however install, play, find problems, fix the problems, play with it and let it become a part of my regular fleet.Anyway, I'm not really certain if anything I siad made sense, so I'm off to do some work work on my 421.Projects
- 421 class Public Transport Commission of New South Wales diesel electircs:
Roof - 90%
No. 2 end - 88% (MU sockets, pilot details and number boards/headlights need to be added)
No. 1 end - 05% (Headlight & handrails are on)
Overall - 11.2%
- 422 class New South Wales Government Railways diesel electircs:
On the drawing boards for a project after the 421's.
Overall - Not official

I dont think it is presumptuous at all to have the model makers have bounding boxes on their models that actually work - sure some people want to tweak the models but if you cant initally have a car you can actually couple to - freeware or not - then it is useless.same thing goes for the LOD - not many modellers use it and after a while it becomes apparent with the frame rate loss.Enocell is a great no excellent model maker and when there is a bounding box problem then he addreses them - Jason Webb
