RE: What is the safest form of transportation?

Apollo 1 did not burn.It was a static training mission, not a launch error. The actual apollo capsules were redesigned to avoid future Oxygen fires. It was a freak accident caused by a simple miscalculation. It can happen with railway boilers safety valve settings too.
There's "Absolute Pressure",and there's "Gauge Pressure"I'll try to explain. The atmosphere inside the capsule was oxygen enriched, compared to the normal air we breath, and it was pressurised to 15PSI,when in the vacuum of space,IE the same pressure as here at the earths surface.Pressure gauges in general use read "zero" at atmospheric pressure. This is "gauge" pressure, but that is still 15PSI above "Absolute zero" pressure. The oxygen content was calculated not to be so high,at this pressure,as to lead to fiercer fires than normal(A pure oxygen atmosphere promotes uncontrollable burning, and even the spontaneous combustion of oil etc). However,on this test, the capsule, although reading that it was internally pressurised to the correct 15PSI,it was forgotten, that on the launch pad,the outside atmospheric pressure is also 15PSI.Thus the gauge inside was reading+15PSI to that of the 15PSI outside, and not 15PSI above the ZeroPSI(vacuum) in space. It was,in fact pressurised to twice its design criteria.IE 30PSI.At this pressure, the oxygen content was rich enough to lead to rapid combustion, and when an electrical spark happened, the inevitable ocurred. That is why steam pressures are referred to as "x"Lbs\SqIn\Gauge,and boiler surveyors use twin bourdoned pressure gauges. Nobody was killed,or even injured travelling,to and from the moon, although Apollo 13 was a close call.

High speed train, although it depends where you are. In the US the safest form of transportation is stated as being the school bus.Bill

The ANSWER is.............!

Okay here is the answer as given on the radio this morning, I might add nobody that called in got this one. Most people said commerical aviation, how false we know that is.Without further ado, the answer, based on records kept from 1901 to 2000 is the ELEVATOR or as the Brits call it the LIFT! Elevators (in a single day) around the world carry more passengers (and freight) than all the aircraft flying, even if every one was full.I was stuned when I heard this and all the facts about elevators that were mentioned on the radio. But thinking about it further the elevator is the safest and also the most used form of mass transit in use! Rich

RE: The ANSWER is.............!

Seems nobody considered vertical transportation. And there are plans to make elevators that go horizontally as well. I would imagine once that comes to pass, buildings in a city like New York might be connected by elevator shafts so that you would just take the elevator to go anywhere within a mile or two of where you are. For further distances, or to buildings not yet connected with the elevator grid, it would be the subway as usual. The safest mode of ground transportation by far is high-speed rail. No operational passenger fatalities in over 30 years.

I can't remember the date, but there has been at least one crash of the German ICE that claimed several lives. Can't remember the location either, although it did destroy a bridge in the process.Dan

RE: ICE Crash

That crash was at only 125 mph on a conventional line. There have also been fatal crashes involving TGVs, but running on conventional lines, not high speed lines. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been an operational passenger fatility on a high-speed train running on a high-speed line. I should have been a little clearer. When a high-speed train(or any train) runs on a conventional line, it is obviously subject to the same hazards as any other train on the line, such a grade crossings or a poor signal system. The lack of grade crossings and a fail safe signal system is what has kept high-speed lines fatality free for over 30 years. This is quite an achievement in my opinion, and given how unsafe airliners and especially autos are, it's a wonder anybody still uses these modes any more.

Unless, of course, some drink/stoned engineer puts his locomotives into the path of an oncoming Amtrak train... Chase, MD, 1987. 17 people (i think) killed in that one, train was at 110, which was the legal limit. Amtrak's worst wreck until a barge driver decided to re-align a bridge at Big Bayou Canot...------ BUZZ ------

RE: ICE Crash

I remember that Chase, MD crash. 10 people died, including the Amtrak engineer, IIRC. The Amtrak train had been pulling some Heritage coaches that were limited to 105 but the recorder from one of the two wrecked AEM-7s said it had been going 128 just before the engineer went into emergency when he saw the three Conrail locomotives blocking his path. He was down to 105 at the time of impact, and was killed instantly. The first locomotive was unrecognizable, the second wasn't much better. Given the speed of the train, it was a miracle there weren't more dead. Had a Metroliner been coming on one of the other tracks at 125, you would have had scores of dead.Anyway, this just shows what happens when you mix freight and passenger on a heavily used line. I think Conrail was kicked off the NEC shortly after that crash.

RE: ICE Crash

That was where the CR engineer actually served jail time for being under the influence of alcohol. He pulled his light enine consist just beyond the switch before the two-track Gunpowder bridge (if there, it would have been worse). The first AEM7 practically disintegrated, the second was mashed. 10 people died, most in the 2nd and 3rd metroliners (the first was empty, or else there would have been more dead). The CR engineer was just ten feet too far out, but it was enough.

RE: What is the safest form of transportation?

Space Travel huh? did we all forget the Challenger in 1986?The skies were clear and the sun shine on the cold freezing morning of January 28, 1986. Kennedy Space Center in Florida was busy preparing the launch of the 25th space shuttle into space. Mission 51-L, the 10th flight of Orbiter Challenger. This was one of the most publicized launches because it was the first time that a civilian, a school teacher, was going into space. The launch of Challenger had been delayed five times due to bad weather, January 28 was the coldest day that NASA had ever launched a shuttle. The time had come, at 11:38 AM Eastern Standard Time, Challenger left Pad 39B at Kennedy. Seventy three seconds into flight, the Orbiter Challenger exploded, killing all seven of its crewBob

I'd say Train...
if you exclude people driving around gates and walking around them...If a plane has an error at 30,000 and goes down, its likly no one will live. But a train derails people have a better shot at living. Not many people do space travel, once lots of people start too, there will be problems and fatalitys as well.
