Rare Experience – image 2

Today I was at a furniture store downtown in Abilene. Across the street from the UP line that runs straight through town. I heard a train horn, ran outside, and to my surprise, behind the UP SD70 was a Rio Grande SD40 with UP stencils 2882! That was pretty cool. I didn't know Rio Grande units still existed! Hasn't it been a long while since Rio Grande was bought by the UP?------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to be involved with trains, the Union Pacific!Rare Experience – image 3John Ekhoff

>I didn't know Rio Grande units still existed! Hasn't it been a long >while since Rio Grande was bought by the UP?Yeah its been a long while (sigh). They are still around. But not for long. After the merger and with all the new units UP has bought they have alomst ran out of numbers for the engines. So having the designation of DRGW or SP helps them have multiple numbers. Rio Grandes fleet is also aging. A lot units have been sold or they are just getting old and being retired. Its a lot cheaper for UP to not paint the units and just get rid of them. in other words... you see a DRGW unit, take a picture!!Nick

RE: Rare Experience

Yeah DRGW units are not plentiful. 7 SD40T-2's, 2 SD-50's (5503, 5507) and a unknown number of GP40-2's. Alsocsome 8600 series tunnel motors are still in DRGW paint, with a UP patch. Also there is one ex DRGW SD40T-2 thats in full UP paint with wings, lightning stripe, and white roof. Its one of a kind. Its number is 8601.
