I asked this question in another Tech Forum, but didn't get a satisfactory answer so I will put it to the Train Simmers here. I am seriously considering switching from XP Pro to 2000 Pro for various reasons and am wondering about the effect it will have on my MSTS and Flight Sim Programs. Other than that I forsee no other problems with my computer. I understand XP is nothing more than a prettied up version of 2000 with a few more bells and whistles that most people could live without in the first place.Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ken B.System info:Gigabyte GA-7VRXP MOB

I take exception to that remark, I use Windows 2000 Pro at work and Windows XP Pro at home. Between the two, Windows XP Pro is a much better package, much more than " a few more bells and whistles that most people could live without in the first place." But to each his own.

RE: 2000 Pro vs XP Pro

After reading the rest of the responses, I would add the following:While XP in indeed a newer rev., my experience to date is the 2000 is a much more stable system at this point in time. It is also much less finnicy about the drivers it uses. As someone else pointed out, it also has a lower operating overhead. Where I work, we are going to give XP another year before we look at it again for an in-house OS. If your 2000 install is patched to current levels, it does pretty much everything XP does and does it with fewer cycles. I fly the FS2001 and the MS combat fltsims and play Links golf and all three work splendidly on 2000.Brad Meyer

RE: 2000 Pro vs XP Pro

LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-03 AT 09:25 AM (EST)

Hi Brad,
Another Urban Myth.... LOL!
Actually 2000 is a lot more finicky than XP and has only about 1/3 the number of drivers available. The plug and play support is minimal in 2000 also...
Having said that, I should point out that most shops have their applications tuned and support desk focused on 2000 and to move to XP is actually a Major expense for them. In a tight economy it is hard to justify the expenditure if you have 2000 reasonably stable and the vast majority of you problems identified and fixed or worked around... Also windows .NET server (Windows XP Server by another name) is just starting to come on line and that is the missing piece needed to replace Windows 2000/Server-Advanced Server-Enterprise/Data Center Server)! Another reason you may be hearing what you are hearing from your management is that Microsoft is very aggressive about pushing XP (Its their revenue stream too, remember) and have gone so far as to label their sales support executives as Windows Evangelists... And in order to protect their pricing from Microsoft which requires that you be on the latest and greatest Large Companies will typically site uncertainty over stability and bugs and what not in order to defer upgrading (which maybe required under their contract with MS) and not P.O. Microsoft....
There are no Major stability issues with XP at this time... In fact it is faster and more stable than 2000 according to Data Pro!

I have to agree with Chuck. . .I run Win2K on most of my machines (I have an old one with 98 on it still), and have dealt with XP at work (sysadmin stuff). While they are both based on the same NT core, XP really does seem improved over 2000 for home/multimedia/general use. That said, I still run 2000. . .the only real problem I have with it is with my sound card drivers. No matter what I do, I just cannot seem to get my SBLive! running quickly with this OS (meaning the sound seems to stutter, be delayed, "pile up", etc). This seems to slow down my gaming considerably. I never have to reboot the machine, though.I'm just dragging my feet for some unknown reason on switching to XP (I guess I just don't want to have to move all my files around again ).

XP incorporates several improvements over 2000 Pro (which I run without glitch, and I dumped XP Pro for it some time back).XP handles the caching of DLL's better than Win2K, which wants to stock-pile them in RAM forever and ever amen.Windows XP has several (count 'em) critical security vulnerabilities that do not exist in Win2K or 98, or ME or DOS or, Linux, or, or, or. Do your own research on those and see what you discover.Windows XP calls the mothership and disables itself if you swap out some hardware, and Windows 2000 just sits there.XP included, I have never, ever, in all my computing days--and I started before Bill Gates landed with his IBM version of DOS with CP/M and a little Z80 prior to that in 1970--run as stable and solid a system as with Windows 2000.If I listed the software I had running on it most here would think it wasn't possible for so much to co-exist in peace under the roof of one OS.When I give up Windows 2K, it won't be for XP. Sorry folks. Not every new OS build is better than the previous one. If you don't believe that, consider what happened to Win98 SE with Windows ME.Windows 2000 began as a Windows NT with a comfy Windows 9x GUI. What happened with XP was lots more Madison Avenue than propellerhead it seems to me.Of course I expect to be bashed by the XP lovers.Oh well. AMIIC. Regards,Mike Apsey

No bashing, each person has their preferences. I stayed with 98SE and then moved to XP. It was a revelation after dealing with the unstableness of 9*. It was like moving from 2.0 - 3.0 - 3.11. each got a little better. Now if work would get rid of 98SE, getting tired of having to reboot two or three times a day.Kevin Arceneaux

Yes, Kevin. The move from the archaic completely different, 9x OS structure is an awakening. That you never paused for 2000, explains part of your love of XP and it is so many, many light years ahead of 9x anything that I understand completely.Oh, and earlier in this thread someone mumbled something about Win2K not having the drivers? That may be true, but keeping your OS up-to-date is good driver medicine for the critics. And Windows 2K is still fully supported and with Service Pack3, it has been endowed with bits of the XP functionality that have survived NT Core the test of time.I'm not an expert, a crusader, or one who looks "down" on anyone using a different system. I merely thought this thread was a bit out of balance so added my .02¢Regards,Mike Apsey

To chime in again, I can understand why someone who already has Windows 2000 installed wouldn't be compelled to upgrade to Windows XP, Windows XP is just Windows 2000 Plus. To downgrade from Windows XP to Windows 2000, the initial subject of this thread makes no sense because your giving up things and gaining nothing in return. For someone currently using Windows 98 or buying a new system, it makes no sense now to purchase Windows 2000 with Windows XP available, XP's a better OS. I use Windows 2000 at work and Windows XP at home, Windows XP is much better in my opinion. Any system that can comfortably run Windows 2000 can easily run Windows XP with equal or better performance, the OS has proven itself over the last year to be the most stable OS MS has ever released.None of this is bashing, just different preferences.

I just can not seem to get the stupid thing to work correctly. I have spoken to others running Win2K who have similar problems with this card. All in all, my preference is still 2000 (I'm compiling a list of all of the extraneous services that need to be turned off in XP, for when/if I do upgrade. That network plug and play crap is evil, for example.)

RE: 2000 Pro vs XP Pro

Having read all the replies to this post I am more inclined than ever to go with 2000. I am going to do a clean install on a new 40 gig 7200 RPM HDD and reinstall everything from scratch so I won't have any left over garbage to contend with.To answer some of your questions as to why I want to change from XP to 2000 the activation BS is the major reason. I actually like XP, but if I want to make a major change like changing HDD's as I am doing I have to call MS and go through the activation BS. I want be able to make these changes and not have MS dictate to me what I can or can't do with "MY" computer. With XP it is as if they own the computer I am using and have to get permission to make changes and I don't like that one little bit. It is not the time and effort involved, but the principle of the matter. I just take exception to the fact MS controls how, when and where you can use XP on your own computer(s). I may be overstating that point a bit, but to a certain degree it is fact. Anyhow thanks for all the input from each of you and to all a very Happy New Year.Ken B.

Well your right, you are overstating another XP computer myth. Windows XP does not require reactivation from Microsoft for simply changing your hard drives. I have added to and changed mine around several times with XP installed and never had to reactivate anything. With XP you can make many major changes to your base system without ever needing to re-activate, if you have a legal copy re-activation is a complete non-issue anyway.Whatever.

RE: 2000 Pro vs XP Pro

I am a hardware fanatic. I probably change my hardware in my systems more than I change my socks! I currently run four systems ... 2 WinXP Home, 1 WinXP Pro, and 1 Win98. The Win98 doesn't really count in this discussion, and it doesn't do much right now anyway (in fact hardly ever gets turned on at the moment). However, my three XP systems are my main computers (one is mine, one is my wifes, and the other my file/game server). Collectively I have installed WindowsXP close to two dozen times (like I said, I change things ALOT!!). Only ONCE have I had to actually call MS to activate ... and I tell ya I really had things screwed up that time!At first I was very reluctant to go with XP, very much because of the activation. However, now after using it for several months you couldn't convince me to roll back to any other OS. XP Home or Pro beats 'em all, hands down. And in the past I have used Windows286, Windows 3.1 (3.11), Windows 95, Windows 98, WIndows 98SE, and Windows 2000.My two bits.Ray

Whatever!
Your reasoning is totally specious and not based in fact....
The reactivation BS typically only happens on Motherboard changes or a hardware and a video card change... And then it doesn't deactivate its self like some one else wrote.... It asks you to call in and get a new activation code... They only ask why you are reactivating and don't tell you what to do with your computer!! Never taken more than 5mins start to stop for me and I do this all the time.....
If you payed for XP then its not a problem!>>>>I want be able to make these changes and not have MS dictate to me what I can or can't do with "MY" computer. With XP it is as if they own the computer I am using and have to get permission to make changes and I don't like that one little bit.<<<<<Thats all in your head! You've been watching too many Oracle-Apple-Linus cartoons.... They could care less about your machine.... all they are trying to do is prevent theft (remember that piracy and hacking is actually stealing???) of their intellectual property that they spent billions developing! That is what activation is all about! Period!!If you're a thief or pirate then you deserve the inconvienece....
Remember MS didn't do this until the entire country of mainland China (and large portions of Russia and India) licensed about 6 copies of windows95....
Go complain to them! Its their fault... MS would rather not do activation... it costs them millions to do it!
Professionally (I do this for a living remember and have for over 35 years) you are making a gross technical and tactical error choosing Win/2k over XP/home for a home office-Gaming rig.....
If you seriously don't want to deal with "MS' BS" then go get Linux and learn.... After all Windows 2000 is expensive (more so than XP) and you do intend to pay for it don't you?
But its your money and your machine not mine so have a nice day!

OK Mike as a professional with over 35 years experience I gotta correct some of the mis-information you are promulgating here!>XP incorporates several improvements over 2000 Pro (which I

>back).
>
>XP handles the caching of DLL's better than Win2K, which
>wants to stock-pile them in RAM forever and ever amen.
>Its called a completely re-written memory manager with improved core recovery! The phenomena you are referring to is called a memory leak in the trade and is particularly vexing on machines that must stay up for long periods of time. Its correction was one of the major design goals of XP!>Windows XP has several (count 'em) critical security
>vulnerabilities that do not exist in Win2K or 98, or ME or

Win2k uses the same mechanism to keep its code up to date (as far as updates to 2k are concerned) This argument is specious! >Windows XP calls the mothership and disables itself if you
>swap out some hardware, and Windows 2000 just sits there. ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE! WINDOWS XP DOES NOT DISABLE ITS SELF IF YOU SWAP OUT NEW HARDWARE! If you make a significant change in the order of a motherboard or CPU or multiple thinks like NIC and Video and Hard drive then the activation checker decides that it is possible that this is not the same machine that it was originally installed on so it halts asks you to call MS and get a new code and starts a 10 day timer. THIS IS A PIRACY-WAREZ-THEFT PREVENTION DEVICE! If you are legitimate the only question you will answer is some thing like yes it is the same machine and I just upgraded it... they will give you a new code and you're off! MS DOES NOT WANT TO HAVE TO RUN THE ACTIVATION SERVICE AS IT COSTS THEM MILLIONS OF $$ TO DO SO! MS did not do this kind of copy protection until it was discovered that the entire country of Mainland China and big pieces of India and Russia had fewer than 100 licensed copies of Windows 95... You are talking theft on the order of billions of $$$... IF YOU DON'T LIKE ACTIVATION GO COMPLAIN TO THEM NOT MS!>XP included, I have never, ever, in all my computing

IF YOU ARE ALREADY RUNNING WINDOWS 2000 AND DON'T PLAN ON UPGRADING YOUR HARDWARE SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE NEAR FUTURE THEN YOU SHOULD STAY ON WINDOWS 2000! There is probably not enough of an incremental change to justify the upgrade until your organization upgrades to Dot Net Server from Windows 2000 Server. (Note I said organization not home user... If you are a single desktop home user not connecting to a corporate network then running Windows 2000 or XP-Professional is like killing ants with an elephant gun IMPO!
>
>Windows 2000 began as a Windows NT with a comfy Windows 9x
>GUI. What happened with XP was lots more Madison Avenue than
>propellerhead it seems to me. Again not true! There are lots of underlying changes... For openers all the hot-fixes such as what you went through with SP3 are bound/complied into the kernel and not overlayed! This improves stability a lot. Then there is the memory leak issue we discussed above. The WDM or Common Driver Module Architecture is a major shift in direction and brings lots of improvements in code stability!
But, you are right in that the Luna Interface is the most visible part of the changes. Just there are lots of things that happened at the kernel level also.>Of course I expect to be bashed by the XP lovers. I'm not an XP lover! I am a professional who gets paid to advise and assist customers on just these kinds of issues. I also do and have done large scale implementations of several thousand desktops and literally hundreds of servers! My business card has and has had initials like MCSE, MCP, MCSA, CNE, Certified Solaris Administrator, CCNA on it!
I REALLY TRULY COULD CARE LESS WHAT OS THE CUSTOMER BUYS AS LONG AS IT MEETS THEIR NEEDS AND THE CHECK CLEARS! Seriously all I really care about is giving the customer the most bang for their buck with the most stability in a total package that meets all the customer's business needs! If that's Windows then great! If its Linux also great! If its Solaris even better as there is a higher profit margin! (LOL!)
If I can only teach you one thing it would be... This is a business not a religion and Microsoft (or Oracle or Sun) are/is no more inherently evil than any other corporate entity! What you have done is down graded your system! Even if in your mind it was only incrementally so, That's a fact..... Most of your DLLs are of a lower revision and your code base in general is not current. You have active bugs that are fixed in XP! That is also a fact. Code upgrades, Driver upgrades and newer hardware are increasingly targeted at XP not 2000! As far as MS is concerned 2000 is a mature product whose replacement is already on the scene (XP)....
While your downgrading of XP to 2000 worked for you it is not a viable solution for the vast majority of users and probably not even for you if you looked at it objectively! BTW, what did you do with the Windows/XP license you bought and paid for, when you downgraded??? And no I wouldn't believe you if you told me MS swapped you even up. Any MS rep. who did that would have a serious problem with his employer.
YOU DID PAY FOR XP DIDN'T YOU????????

I thought rather highly of the later OS/2 releases, I tend to agree with your comment above. I wouldn't argue with anyone claiming XP was a "better" system based on whatever benchmark one cares to use. My point is that 2000 is up to the task the original poster outlined in his post and is, in my experience, more stable. It is also, as you pointed out, much more forgiving of h/w upgrades.Brad Meyer

RE: 2000 Pro vs XP Pro

Actually Bryan its not more forgiving...
It has a smaller driver base so is less likely to be able to deal with new hardware unless the manufacturer provides Windows 2000 drivers....
On new "strange" hardware 2000 has a habit of going on "French Leave" at times! Much more so than XP does.
My point above is if you already have 2000 and it is working well and you don't want need the interface and networking improvements in XP and are happy stay there, but if you are buying for a new machine go straight to XP. Unless you want pirated software as 2000 is pretty common on warez sites now... something about not having activation.Chuck Schneider

RE: 2000 Pro vs XP Pro

Ask a simple question in a forum and more often than not a few simpletons will respond and it turns into a battle of who thinks their chit stinks less. Sounds like a bunch or 3rd graders arguing about who has the toughest father. All I wanted was a simple answer to a simple question. I have XP Pro and love it, not only that I plan on keeping it in my computer. I was basically interested in how MSTS ran in 2000 Pro as opposed to XP Pro due to the rescorces XP eats up. Now is that too hard for somebody with past experience with both OS's to answer? I am building a new computer that will be totally dedicated to MSTS and Flight Sim only with major upgrades when I feel they are necessary.
Tell you what Chuck (chucksc) if you ever see another post from me in any of the forums don't bother to post your opinion or . I can do without opinions from somebody that implies I am a thief or a pirate. I bought and paid for my full version copy of XP Pro and I have "NEVER" been into a warez site once I found out what they were several years ago. That you would even mention them smacks of somebody with first hand knowledge and/or use of said warez sites. I don't need the hassle of undoing something that may or may not work, may or may not be legal, etc. Furthermore who cares how many letters you have behind your name or on your business card or what you do for a living? These forums are here to HELP others and not belitlle them if they don't know how to do something or whatever. Remember this...There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers. Enough said on this matter and remember I don't need or want your less than imformative help from here on out thank you.To the rest of you that did provide me with informative suggestions and help without attacking me I thank you very much.KEN B.

If you ask for people to offer their opinions on a public forum you shouldn't get your back up because people responded with what you asked for. When a question is asked, the answer to that question isn't stupid just because it's not the answer you wanted to hear. Enough said.

RE: 2000 Pro vs XP Pro

That is exactly what I said and I got a ton of intelligent and worthwhile opinions as well as insight to the differences in 2000 and XP. It was very helpful and I saw no stupid answers or opinions. Everything posted was the respectful opinion of the user of 2000 or XP as far as I could see. I also had the courtesy to thank those that did respond. What I took exception to was Chuck implying I had a pirated copy of XP, which I don't have by the way. That is unless Office Max is selling pirated copies at $300.00 a crack. All I did was express my opinion about the activation process and my dislike of said process, along with millions of others I might add, but does that qualify me as a pirate or a thief? I think not and I fully understand the MS stance on the activation or some process to cut back on piracy due to the $$$ loss each year. Hey I deal in Sportscards and it isn't fun when you find out a several hundred dollar autographed card is counterfiet as has happened to me twice in the last five years.I learned all I needed to know from the posts and based on what I have seen I think I will try 2000 in my new computer and I fully intend to keep XP in my present computer because it is a fantastic OS and I have yet to have any sort of problem with it since it was installed about a year ago. Do self induced screw-ups count against XP? Thanks again guys.Ken B.

RE: 2000 Pro vs XP Pro

LAST EDITED ON Jan-03-03 AT 00:08 AM (EST)

OK Ken here is your original Post"I am seriously considering switching from XP Pro to 2000 Pro for various reasons and am wondering about the effect it will have on my MSTS and Flight Sim Programs. Other than that I foresee no other problems with my computer. I understand XP is nothing more than a prettied up version of 2000 with a few more bells and whistles that most people could live without in the first place.Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
"So being a good samaritan and in the business for 35 years I responded to your question with technical data in an honest attempt to help you.....A bunch of other people responded with Urban Myths and personal opinions with out supporting facts. Most of them negative concerning XP!i reacted to all the misinformation that was being spewed and tried to correct it. Again in an effort to prevent you from making a technically ill-advised decision! You still haven't stated why you felt you had to downgrade so I assumed your main issues were with MSFS and MSTS and based my advice accordingly! You came back and regurgitated the same opinion again! Did you really want help or did you just want to validate a dumb a$$ decision you had already made? I did not accuse you of being a pirate! I asked if your were one! I pointed out that in my experience the primary reason for people to do what you were contemplating doing was to beat the MS licensing and activation system and asked if your copy of XP was valid/licensed. You know what MS encourages all their certified professionals to ask that very question when in doubt. Something about all that piracy! I also asked what you were doing about the licensing costs and pointed out it was unlikely you would get anyone at MS or a reputable dealer to engage in a swap! >>>>>You said
"That you would even mention them smacks of somebody with first hand knowledge and/or use of said warez sites."I sure do as I deal with Information Security professionally on a daily basis! "Furthermore who cares how many letters you have behind your name or on your business card or what you do for a living?"You should when you are asking a question about Information Technology! It is a way of my certifying to you that I know what I am talking about and have been publicly certified after a rigorous examination regimen by the people that write the software as some one who does know what he is talking about and doing! People pay money for my advice and I was giving it to you for free! Methinks you have over reacted (as in the lady protests too much) and as far as me not answering any more of your 13 posts don't worry! I won't... As for the accusation of Piracy, If the F00 $hits then wear it! I personally now think you are a troll! If you ask that same question enough times maybe you'll finally find some idiot to say you did the right thing!Have a nice day!
Oh yeah explain to me again where I belittled you! The only people I belittled were the pirates...
You're not a Naval Aviator are you?
