This is what the FL-9 is. Not a GP-9. a FL-9 stands for a F-9 that is lengthed. They were also used by NH. They were bulit to go into the NYC GCT tunnels in Third rail mode.

Thanks Kevin - that's what I, on the opposite side of the pond, understood him to mean. Having delved into a couple of websites I can now understand the confusion.Bill

Prefer Family lines/L&N/Seaboard to a FL9 any day. The correct designation is FL9, no dash, for the engine.Kevin Arceneaux

Well since J-C, Phil Moberg and I all steal ideas from TriRailF39.25 and have never had any original thoughts we may as well proceed with the project we are working on, eh?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-31-02 AT 11:26 AM (EST)

The FL9 model was designed for, and ourchased only by, the New Haven. It can operate off overrunning or underrunning third rail by means of a movable shoe, but not off cantenary. It engages either type of third rail at speed. It resembles the FP9 except for the A1A Flexicoil trailing truck and third rail pickup equipment. There were two versions, FL9 1750 HP. and the FL9 1800 HP. I'll bet Hercule knew this info and provided it to Jerry Pinkepank for his 2nd Diesel Spotter's Guide! There is "NO" FL-9 locomotive ever designed, fabricated and constructed by EMD!

RE: FL9 issue

Say Don;I do not have a picture to show you, but the early FL9's did operate off catenery in NYC. They had a small pantograph on the roof right behind the cab door.
Because of the extra length of the FL9's due to the A-1-A rear trucks, and numerous switches, the pickup shoes were not able to reach the third rails in the tight reverse loops under Grand Central Station in NYC.
The small pantograph was used to access the overhead Catenery only in the tunnel loops.
Hope this added info helps.Daniel Marra, Sr.

RE: FL9 issue

That really wasn't to access catenary...
in the really complex 3rd rail track in the bowels of Grand Central there were places where 3rd rail shoes couldn't make contact (double slip switches and the like) so they had a third rail mounted to the ceiling of the tunnels and such in those places.... that is what that mini pantograph is for.... FWIW the NYC-CUT 3rd rail electric motors all had the same think mounted on their roofs.... The NH quickly found out that it wasn't necessary as the FL9s could coast through those spots and in the rare event that they got "stuck" in one of the dead zones could fire up their EMD567 prime mover and motor off them at which point they would switch back to DC 3rd rail and power the diesel back down.....Chuck Schneider

RE: FL9 issue

Chuck,Was the cantenary pick up-shoe on FL9 similar to the pick-up shoe mounted on top of the NYC S and T Class Tunnel Motors used in New York city? I do not believe that the NYC used the term pantograph for this type of equipment.
