I took these over the Thanksgiving & Christmas Holiday - it's a great time to take photos since the trains are parked and idle for the holidays. Thought I would share a few. Thanks! Michael

Great shots, by the way. In January, I'm going to be in Nashville, and have a whole Saturday to railfan the area. Obviously, you're the man I need to talk to. I'd like to know the best ways to get to Radnor, the best vantage points from which to see the yard action, and any other worthwhile hotspots within a reasonable driving distance of town. I'd be extremely grateful if you could throw some hints my way. Thanks in advance, I hope! PopBret Stringer jbstringer@att.net
Hey Bret....here's the information you requested...not sure if you are at all familiar with where Radnor Yard is located as directions would depend on where you would be entering Nashville from. Most of the Interstate system in Nashville will lead you to various locations for railfanning. I will advise upfront that there are not a lot of good locations to take pictures from due to businesses, traffic and weeds. The CSX Radnor departing yard is located off I-440 Nolensville Pike - again depending on which direction you approach it from. If you exist coming from Knoxville or Chattanooga you would make a left off the exit - go the the 2nd redlight (Melrose Ave) and make a right then an immediate left before crossing the bridge. As you turn right you will see the 13 track departure yard. Radnor Yard is quite large and goes from here back down I-65 South of which you can exit Harding Place and see the humping yard to the left and the arriving yard to the right. Some folks take advantage of the Harding Pl overpass and take pictures from there. Kayne Yard is located in downtown Nashville and has several places that you could take pictures from....we also have Nashville and Eastern RR here which is also located off I-24 and adjacent to downtown Nashville. Once you locate Radnor Yard you can follow it using several roads - Allied Drive, Grandview, Trousdale, Kline and Amory Drive. There are other locations that are worthy of checking out depending on time....trains going to Atlanta - can be seen from Hickory Hollow Mall off I-24 East towards Chattanooga...as I mentioned following all of the main highways in Nashville will always eventually wind up near or adjacent to tracks.Hope this helps and hope the weather cooperates. Happy Railfanning and Happy New Year.Michael
Yes, it helps a lot. I'm completely unfamiliar with Nashville, except for driving through it on I65/24, so just the fact that you listed some street names is a tremendous benefit to me. Now at least I've got some good places to start, and some names to be looking for. In fact, looking at the atlas, and finding the streets you mention, I can already see basically where the yard area is. Thank you! Couple more questions, if you don't mind: 1) Any spectacular bridges, or busy tunnels in the area? 2) If not the yard itself, what's the busiest "chokepoint" in the area. Any multi-line diamonds, or interlockings? 3) Is the RR museum in Nashville worth the limited time I have? 4) How far out of town, and in which direction, should I go to see trains running at full track speed (I assume 60mph there)? Or are the mainlines too little used, and I'm much better off just parking it by the yard and stretching out with the binocs? 5) And finally, if there's a bigger, better, or busier place to see action within 60 or so miles, please clue me in. Especially if I can get there by following scenic trackage. Thanks a bunch, Michael. Just the information you've already provided has made me much more optimistic about this trip being a success. Anything else you can provide will be lagniappe (Cajun French, for "a little something extra").Pop
1) Any spectacular bridges, or busy tunnels in the area? *There are several bridges around - one that crosses the Cumberland River which is located in downtown Nashville off of I-65/I-24 coming in the from the north....this bridge takes freight coming in from the north into Kayne Yard which is off Charlotte Pike and Church Street. There is also a long bridge that is close to Shelby Park which is nice as it also crosses the Cumberland River going NE. 2) If not the yard itself, what's the busiest "chokepoint" in the area. Any multi-line diamonds, or interlockings? Going north from Nashville Amqui is an interlocking with double cross-overs with tracks going toward Hendersonville/Gallatin (Steam Plant located there which CSX brings coal loads in from time to time)...and then to other points in Kentucky.3) Is the RR museum in Nashville worth the limited time I have? *Not sure as I haven't been there - however it's got a large membership and they help NERR with excursion trains and they also have N and HO scale layouts - this is also adjacent to the NERR yard which contains lots of old vintage cars and some E9s in preparation for the proposed rail commuter line. Check out their website for more information: http://www.tcry.org/4) How far out of town, and in which direction, should I go to see trains running at full track speed (I assume 60mph there)? *The line to Chattanooga and Atlanta is now all concrete ties and these trains typically run 60 MPH limit....these tracks are seen best going on 41A Murfreesboro Rd towards LaVergne, Smyrna and Murfreesboro TN. The Nissan Plant is located on this line. A Holiday Inn is located in Hickory Hollow and would be a great place to see these trains pass through - as long as you got a room on the back side....typically trains run through about every 2 hours RTC...from mixed, to intermodal, to coal and lots of Autoracks....Or are the mainlines too little used, and I'm much better off just parking it by the yard and stretching out with the binocs? *The mainlines are used allot going in all directions from Radnor Yard.5) And finally, if there's a bigger, better, or busier place to see action within 60 or so miles, please clue me in. Especially if I can get there by following scenic trackage. *I think the LaVergne/Symrna might be your best bet....I guess Chattanooga would probably be the next closet and it's 125 miles...now there may be someplace closer like Franklin TN but not sure of the traffic volume.Might want to check this out also: http://www.trainweb.org/csxtimetables/Nashville/NashvilleTerm.html Just for fun, I added the Tennessee Central (now Nashville and Eastern RR map)....they connect with CSX at Vine Hill. This is a route I would love to create one day when I obtain more skills in building routes....like the small short lines.Hope this helps and that lot's of trains are running when you are in town. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!Michael
