Today at breakfast we saw a UP ttrain heading east. One of the engines was painted red and blue with the lettering HLCX on it. Anyone have info about this road?

RE: HLCX

It's not a "road," it's a leased unit, from Helm Financial (HLCX). Any time you see an "X" in the last position of the reporting marks, it means the car is owned by a private company, either for their own use (as in DOWX), or for profit lease, as in HLCX and FURX (First Union Rail Leasing).Pop

RE: HLCX

CSX Transpotation (the train part of CSX Corp) has reporting marks of CSXT. Look hard on all CSX power and rolling stock, and you'll see the marks "CSXT" somewhere on it, although obviously not as noticable as the CSX logo.

RE: HLCX

Helm has a lot of former railroads engines, some include ex UP C36M's still in UP paint, ex BN SD40-2's still in BN paint, and also former NS C30-7's with the NS blacked out. Some in the bule and maroon include ex CR/EL SDP45 #6515, and several others. The question I have is that it HLGX the same company?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-22-02 AT 09:08 PM (EST)

The "C" is for Chessie, and "S" is for Seaboard, and the "X" is supposed to be the multiplication symbol, representing that Chessie and Seaboard together represent "many times more." Kind of a "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" concept.Pop Addendum:
Below is from the CSX web site. It's explained a little differently than the story that was run in Trains Mag a few months ago. According to the Trains account (told be people that were a part of the process), The "C" and the "S" were a given. They spent a lot of time looking for the third letter, and trying to decide what it should be. In the meantime, they needed something to use for the reams of legal doucuments and filings that the STB, ICC, FTC, and whoever else watches over mergers was reviewing. So they chose "X" as a temporary fill-in for the paperwork phase, until they could decide on a permanent final letter. Eventually, after they had used CSX for so long in the legal procedures, everyone had gotten used to it, and it appeared on thousands of documents, so they decided to just stick with it, and explain it as the multiplication symbol, as quoted below from the CSX site:"What does CSX stand for?
CSX was formed in 1980 by the acquisition of the Chessie System Railway and the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad -- thus the 'C' and the 'S.' These two entities brought with them subsidiaries that were not transportation-related, such as resort, video production, and mineral companies. Thus, the 'X' stands for 'and all others.' "Pop
