This is in Schellville, CA. I've passed it many times on the way up to the Napa Valley, but Wednesday was the first time I stopped and looked at it closely. Is it a GP-9? Isn't it pretty?Quentin

SD9....6-axle version of the GP9 for more tractive effort. And that's a heck of a paint job. Kinda like the diesel version of the blind-deaf-one-eyed-three-legged dog that answers to the name of Lucky. Mr. F

Poor old SP cadillac. I'm sure that unit has seen better days. And of course some low-class taggers had to put their graffiti on it.

The pattern on the paint in the middle of the long hood makes me wonder if perhaps this unit was abandoned after a fire in the engine compartment. Where is Schnellville in California, and was this one of the engines left behind when the Northwestern Pacific and/or Eureka Northern quit running?

RE: sleeping beauty! old GP 9?

Actually, I found a SP diesel roster which records that the SP sold #4433 in 1992 to the WVRD (Willamatte Valley Railroad?) in Oregon. So, UP can't sell it for a song, because they don't own it. It's not clear to me how the engine ended up in California, nor who owns it now. I'm still researching that question.

sorry john but I beg to differ, that is defantly grafitti. being a fire fighter and a Arson/fire inspector apprentus, I have a good idea what fire dose to metal. and that is not what happens. the side of a locomotive, if exopsed to enought fire to strip the paint, would causebowing and a rust color. I think it is just some low lives life work that has faded over time.
but that is just my 2 cents.

I'd have to agree that it looks more like graffiti. Although I must admit at first glance it did look like a fire, or atleast the heat from the DB's melting the paint off the side.Shows you how bored I am......er.....wasGreg

Delamaize,
I agree with you about an engine compt file would cause more metal damage, and that pattern does look like some sort of stylized bird (as mentioned elsewhere) but that black stain coming down from the dynamic brake housing looks like a soot stain. Burned out a grid that has since been washed out by the rain maybe?

Dan,Schellville is in southern Sonoma County, just west of the Carneros region famous for white wine. It's only half an hour north of the Bay Area. You are right, this was a NWP station in the old days.So it's an SD-9.Quentin

I checked over on the Espee Modelers site, and there's another picture of this unit (it's an SD-9E; one of the Sac Shops rebuilds) up in Albany, OR, in only slightly better condition. The link for the main SD9E page is: http://espee.railfan.net/spsd09e.htmlI can't find a listing for the reporting marks mentioned above (who this unit was sold to), but I suspect Dan is correct. It would make sense, since a lot of the SD9E's finished up their service with the SP in Oregon.Regards,

Kind of werid ain't it? Maybe in 10-20 years some new railfan may look at an SD40-2 and marvel at its anicent years of service, or at its telltale signs of battling long grades. Or maybe in 40 years a CW44AC?

RE: sleeping beauty! old GP 9?

My research on the web suggests that the WVRD (Willamette Vally Railroad) was a very short switching operation at Independence, OR. Listed as operating 0.6 miles of track with a single customer, a lumber mill named 'Mountain Fir'. The WVRD bought three SD9s from the SP in 1992. Besides the SD9s, they also owned a GP9 and two SW1200s. Seems like a lot of engines for a line only 0.6 miles long. The WVRD quit running in 1993 when the mill shut down. The listed owner of WVRD was 'Rail West, Inc.', who also owned and still operates several short lines in Oregon. Apparently the locomotives from the WVRD were transferred to other 'Rail West' locations. I haven't tracked down yet how the engine ended up on the NWP in California.

Looking at this made me consider that trains are gonna get real ugly in the future and not as nice as they used to. Aleady, many of the new EMD switcher designs are looking very ultra modern and drifting away from the true image of a locomotive. It's really sad... *~þHÃt*Rat~**~classic american playa~*

I think it's not a bird but letters in a tag. Maybe LS or LF, or even US. That big black mark is a shadow I think. Maybe a telephone pole casting something over it. Still, I can't help but think this thing is undergoing work, since other than the paint and body, it is in pretty good shape.

Guentin, if you can send me your email address to my train-sim inbox, we can get the ball rolling. Repasting isn't easier than repainting, but the results are astonishing (well, to me anyway).. -and I'm getting to where I enjoy it more than repainting! My photo collection is wearing kinda thin, and that's why I've been looking to see if anyone would want their photos of old engines brought to life. I mostly like to work on GP7&9s, SD7&9s, etc., but I've been known to also do GP30-40s.

How long has that locomotive been in that location. I am 99% sure I saw that loco in Beaverton, OR last summer on a WPRR (Willamette & Pacific--Now Portland & Western) track. I looked like it had been through a fire. I didn't have my camera with me. I went back the next day to photograph it but it was gone. Good question. I go by that small junction every couple of months when making an excursion to that part of the wine country, but I can't be sure how long it's been there. In fact, I expected to see one or two beaten up California Western locomotives there -- that was what I had recalled finding there. I'll try to get up there this coming weekend and see what's up then. Maybe it's not as dead a spot as I thought.Quentin
