Aug-12-01, 10:32 AM (EST) "Here's a brain teaser!" Yesterday, on the radio station, they have these little trivia questions for prizes and they asked a good question that nobody could answer. "Who is the world's largest employer"?
Now they got answers like the US government, GM, the military, etc.Ready for the answer? The world's largest employer is....Indian Railways! Interesting, huh? A railroad, and it employs more people than any other industry.Rich

Aug-12-01, 05:18 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Here's a brain teaser!" Perhaps because Indian Railways is still operated like it was in the 19th century to a degree. Although steam has now been abandoned, indian railways still employ a lot of on train staff, for example in restuarant cars etc, as well as employing a huge army of station staff. In many western countries of course often even quite busy stations only employ one or two people, or even none at all. There is also far more frieght that goes by rail in India due to the poor standard of the road system and the efficeincy of it going over long distances by train. We have Russian train tapes and they have people getting paid for jobs that have been eliminated, and when train pull into some station hordes of people come out to wash it. Aug-13-01, 11:23 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Here's a brain teaser!" They attribute a lot of employment by Indian Railways to crossing guards, since India has few over or under road crossings and crossings are manual not automatic. And then too, it takes a lot of stong Hindus to push people into packed trains! Rich
