Correct - The Santa Fe Railroad full name is Atchison, Topek & Santa Fe Railway, and the Burlington Northern was created by the merger of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, Great Northern Railway, Northern Pacific Railway & the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway in the 1970's I think it was. Mind you, it was extremely difficult trying to decide which of those roads was to go first in the new name, and what it was going to be called, with four roads being merged, but Burlington Northern was chosen to keep it simple, and probably because the C B & Q and Gt. Northern roads were the biggest, and thus deserved first place in the naming. I may be wrong but it's pretty logical here Regards...Jim McDermott

"RE: What does BNSF stand for?" nd the Atchitson Topeka and Santa Fe hasnt always been that, very few railroads ever are, because most were formed from very short railroads combined together in the middle to late 1800s. Aug-18-01, 01:15 AM (EST) 8. "RE: What does BNSF stand for?" Some clever cynic nicknamed the Burlington Northern the "Big Nothing." After the merger with Santa Fe, it became "Bigger Now, Same Foulups." (The "F" may have abbreviated another word, possibly, which I will leave to your imagination.GK Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-18-01, 12:46 PM (EST) 9. "RE: What does BNSF stand for?" ??? whoever that was is an idiot, because BNSF is the 2nd best run railroad and is trying to merge with the first, CN. If you want to criticize, go for NS and in 1997-1999 UP. But BNSF, with very fast reliable intermodal service, does not deserve that name. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
