Aug-12-01, 09:02 AM (EST) "PC locks up with my new GeForce 2 Mx" Yes I know its the wrong forum but I hope someone can help meI have a problem with my P3 800, after buying a GeForce 2 MX to replace my dusty old Voodoo 3 2000, I installed the card and screamed as I saw my FPS drop from 38 FPS at Whitefish yard with the Voodoo 3 to under 20 FPS followed by a full system crash with the new card (no blue screen).
Other programes crash to like Counterstrike and Deus Ex
I installed the VIA 4in1 drivers, the new 12.41 nVidia drivers and checked all my BIOS settings one by one. And I have my original Drivers disk from the manufactures.To check my AGP card was ok I borrowed a freinds ELSA AGP card and it also crashed after a few seconds.My PC is a Vigelen Contender 800 Mhz P3
128 mbs ram

If you're not comfortable poking around in the CMOS, you might want to get someone to help you, but most computers you hit the delete key when you're booting to get the CMOS screen. Just don't save any settings if you're not sure what you're doing. Hunt until you find the setting for the AGP aperture, and check your info sheet on the card to see what it should be. If you're going from a PCI to an AGP it might not even be enabled. I have a geforce 2, without the mmx thingie, and for mine it says it should be at least 8mb (I think, don't remember) and preferably higher. Some say you should set it to the size of the ram on the video card.
Also, somewhere in the setup for MSTS is a setting to have it check your display card again. It might have looked for the voodoo, didn't find it, and went to software mode. Let us know how you make out. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-16-01, 08:40 AM (EST) 4. "RE: PC locks up with my new GeForce 2 Mx" I had a similar problem when I went from a Voodoo3 to Asus V7700 64 megs. I would get a consistant system lockup about 18 minutes into MSTS. You could almost set a clock by it. No way out but to push the button or power down. I tried everything under the sun, juggling IRQ's, tweaking every video, DirectX, bios parameter I could think of that made sense. Finally I set the AGP apeture to 16 megs (from the original 64 megs) and no problems since. I have no idea why that works but it does. I expected lowered frame rates but didn't see them. I would think a higher setting of the apeture would be more logical with a 64meg video board and 512megs of system RAM and I had tried settings up to 256megs earlier with no success. Al
