Aug-08-01, 10:42 AM (EST) "Trains running with lights on in daytime" Here in Norway all trains run with lights on even in daytime. How is it in other countries? Do US trains run lights on also in daytime - that would make the "AI lights" upgrade on this site highly recommended.. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Trains running with lights on in daytime" Here in the U.S. it has been FRA ( Federal Railway Administration ) rule since the days of dieselization that trains must run with their lights on. About 15-20 years ago RRs also added Ditchlights to their mainline locos to cutdown on grade crossing accidents......hasn't helped much.....people still try to beat the train to the crossing (just as they do in certain spots in MSTS.....Marias Pass approaching Essex for instance).

"RE: Trains running with lights on in daytime" Full lights when operating.....dim only for the train waiting at a signal for a "meet" when they are supposed to dim their lights. Switchers operating in yards are also allowed to use dim lighting....otherwise its full blast ON!

"RE: Trains running with lights on in daytime" When approaching a directionally opposing train and its headlight is out it is taken as a stop signal and you are not permitted to pass. The reasoning is that there maybe some type of obstruction on your track. Usually a flag would be sent forward to stop your train and provide you with information! "RE: Trains running with lights on in daytime" In the UK trains must run with lights on at all times. The lights are turned on to make them easier to see from a distance, they are useless for seeing the track ahead. I'd second that, on the network I used to drive on th lights were purely 'running' lights and completely useless for visibilty for the drivers during the hours of darkness. However that did mean that drivers are not blinded by the lights of on-coming trains, as I'm sure many of us have been by cars when driving at night! So I think broght headlights on trains are a double edged sword - good for seeing the track ahead, but blinding for other trains. I think the reason for this in the UK is that the vast majority of railway lines are fenced in and people and animals shouldn't!! be able to again unauthorised track side access and authorised rail worker have to wear the brightest flurescent orange clothing available when track side!CheersBill

Aug-09-01, 02:49 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Trains running with lights on in daytime" In Canada it's headlights and ditchlights on full night & day. The ditchlights must be turned off and headlight to dim when being approached by an opposing train.Richard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-09-01, 03:12 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Trains running with lights on in daytime" Same here........dim setting for running and stationary "meets". As a previous post also noted... lights off on mainline locomotive is supposed to be a warning to the opposing consist that something is wrong and this must be acknowledged by the engineer of the other train!

>of the US?) It's not mandatory at least in Ontario & Quebec, but is recommended. Each province has their own jurisdiction. Automobiles built or imported to Canada after aproximately 1990 are designed to turn on the headlights automatically when the ignition is turned on. Later models also turn on the tail lights.Richard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
