Aug-06-01, 05:41 PM (EST) "Eng coded file" Can anybody help???I use Microsoft "Word" to change the GP38, F7A, SD40 Eng file text, for any addons I am trying to add to the MSTS trainset. This has always worked in the past, now, there is a problem.Word will no longer save the coded text after the changes have been made, for some reason.Even after re-installing "Word", I still have this problem. Can anybody tell me what the problem might now be??Or what text editor do you use to make the changes??I think that I have read in the instructions, sent with the readme text, that Word Pad should be used, but every time I try it, my text editor defaults to MS Word and I continue to have the same problem.Any help would be Very Much appreciated.Sorry about the name fw190, but its a carry over from the Flightsim.com forum. Not very Trainish I know.
Thanks again for any help that may be offered.
Cheers

Aug-06-01, 05:48 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Eng coded file" You need to used MS Word Pad and save your *.eng *.S *.cvf and *.sms files in the "unicode text document" format. This can be selected in the Save File as Box. From what I gather on these forums here you may have corrupted your files and might need to start from the begining (using orginial files). Aug-06-01, 06:16 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Eng coded file" I have created a shortcut to WordPad on my desktop. To do that, right click on the desktop and choose New->Shortcut. Click Browse and navigate to write.exe in your Windows directory. Click Next, then Finish and your shortcut is done. Now you can drag the eng files from Windows Explorer onto the shortcut. These instructions work for Windows 98 or 95. Might be different for Windows ME or 2000. Aug-08-01, 12:33 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Eng coded file" They are the same for ME but you can also specify when you choose Wordpad the first time that you always want WordPad to open the same type of files. It's the checkbox in the lower left..then all you need to do is double click the file icon you want to open and Voila!

Aug-06-01, 07:06 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Eng coded file" G'day Joe,I downloaded a couple of files which stated to use NOTEpad to open these .eng etc files.
I spent ages and ages trying to figure out WHY my NOTEpad did not work on these files.
Also had on my computer NOTEpad+ (plus) and another exellent text editor EDITpad plus. EDITpad would open them perfectly and save the file... BUT..... I immeadiately noticed the file was half the size and of course they would NOT work.
I was getting quite upset till I opened another utility file from TrainSim and there it was.............
USE WORDpad to open these files. So all ended okay.
It just never occured to me to use the Windows WORDPAD.
So anyone be careful when reading Readme files. Its WORDpad, not NOTEpad. I'm sure its only a mis-print of those who uploaded those files, but sure gave a new comer to MSTS some trying moments.John Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-06-01, 07:39 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Eng coded file" THANK YOU EVERYBODY....who has responded with a suggestion.THIS TIME the problem seems to have been a corrupted set of files that I was using for my Eng changes. I re-installed the original F7 Demo package and using these new files for my changes, everything worked as it should.I then tried to use the older set of files and the changes would not work.So THANK YOU ALL, AGAIN for your suggestions. Cheers

Aug-06-01, 10:54 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Eng coded file" G’day again Joe,When I read your post, I read and answered it on-line and read over this bit you stated.
***************************
I think that I have read in the instructions, sent with the readme text, that Word Pad should be used, but every time I try it, my text editor defaults to MS Word and I continue to have the same problem.
***************************I got to read your post again off-line and here is my answer to this bit above. Hope it helps you out.
The reason your computer defaults to MS-Word is the File Types are set to be associated with Ms-Word and not Wordpad. But the .eng, .sd, .wag, and .sms files would normally are NOT associated with any File Types at all, as these are rare filenames. (well to me anyway)Here I speak for Windows 98.. Windows SE would be the same (I think).
Try this if you like,
Open your Windows Explorer,
Click VIEW
Click on DETAILS (personally I find the files are much easy to see and to work with this way). Now Go to where your Train Sim Folder is.
Normally.... C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator
Click the TRAINS folder,
Then TRAINSET folder.
As an example:- click on say the DASH9 Folder.
In it you will see the .eng & .sf files.
The ICON on these files if you have not messed with them before should show a Windows icon or such associated with them.
If this is so, then click, or double click the .eng file and it will then open a box called "OPEN WITH"
Scroll down till you find WORDPAD, make sure the "Always use this program to open file" is ticked on. Normally this box is defaulted ticked on this way in Windows 98.
Click on Wordpad and click OK.
Now when you click a .eng file it will then open everytime in WordPad.
Do the same to the .sd and .sms and *cab.sms files. Or any files you want WORDPAD to open.PLEASE NOTE…..
Better idea if you use this method is to FIRST un-tick the "Always use this program to open this file" first, before selecting WORDPAD. This is to make sure WORDPAD can READ that file okay.
Some files you open you will get Gobble Gosh, so you do not want a link to that file. (Get my drift)
If WORDPAD will read it okay, then exit, and do it again, but this time with the "Always use this program to open this file" ticked on.
THIS box is usually on by DEFAULT, personally I wish it was NOT, as it is annoying because if you forget to un-tick it and then open a file using this method and it does not work, you then have to go into Windows Explorer, VIEW, Folder Options, FILE TYPES and delete that linked associated file reference out. This can be a darn big pain. Now IF your .eng, .sf are linked or associated to MS-Word, then open Windows Explorer
click VIEW,
click FOLDER OPTIONS,
click FILE TYPES tab.
scroll down till you find ENG file
Click REMOVE.
If the .sf and .sms etc are also linked to MS-Word, also delete SF and SMS as well from File Types.
This then deletes any associated links references to these files.
Go now to your .eng file etc and click them, and in the “OPEN WITH” box select WordPad and these files will then be linked to Wordpad anytime you need to EDIT them.Personally I always use Windows Explorer to do all my work of editing through these file references.
Works well and easy for me.Your only other alternative is to open WORDPAD and go find the file you want to edit.
That's heaps of hard yakka (work).
Hope this is of some help to you or anyone else.John.

Aug-07-01, 02:43 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Eng coded file" I must be doing something wrong, its too easy for me. I just open the Dash 9 folder, double click on the .eng file, it opens, I make whatever changes I like, I click on the little X in the upper right hand corner of the screen and it asks me "Save changes?" I punch OK and thats all there is to it.Glad to see you're back alive and well John. I was worried that I hadn't heard from you for a spell.Jim McCarthy Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-07-01, 04:12 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Eng coded file" G'day Jim,No I'm still kicking, been busy though. Last two mails to you were returned to me, so I wondered what happened to you. Glad to see your still alive and kicking as well. So you got MSTS as well. The Wordpad note I posted above you must have clicked the .eng file and associated WORDPAD correctly the first time. Oh hang on your got Windows ME, sorry do no know much about it. Maybe different than my old faithful Windows 98.Yes these files are certainly easy to open when you get it right first time.Starting to get the feel of MSTS. Not as quite good as the real thing though, but certainly very good for us retired railwaymen to again play with freight trains, even if it is on a computer and not our own country railways. Having great fun with the Marias Pass and my Santa Fe and CP SD90macs. Love em....

Aug-07-01, 04:17 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Eng coded file" Good to hear from you John. I just posted a note about an experiment I did on Marias Pass. You might find it interesting if you've had trouble climbing that steep hill. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-07-01, 04:39 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Eng coded file" I think that where confusion is coming from is that Notepad does work with Unicode files on some of the newer versions of Windows. However Wordpad works for all versions of Windows, so should be recommended in download readme files. If you have accidentally associated the .wag file type with something else (eg. Word) the easy way to change the association is to find the .wag file in Windows Explorer, press 'Shft' and click the right mouse button on the file and 'Open With ...' appears in the drop down menu. Select Wordpad from the list of programs, and make sure the 'Always Use ...' box is checked.Ian M.

*******************Thanks for that afraid I'm from the old school haven't caught up with some of these better shortcuts.
Both get the same result, only yours is much quicker Ian. Good one.John Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
