Not sure that anyone other than perhaps Plainsman will think too much of this, but accordnig to the local news, a big study is underway to determine the best approach to adding a commuter rail line for eastern and central Nebraska. Seems pretty funny to me that such a thing is even considered, much less at a point where a commitee including UP, BNSF, the state Public Service Commission, Omaha area transit authority and a few other entities have been formed to take plan to the next phase. The plan as it exists now includes a high speed commuter line from Sioux City, Iowa, southward through Omaha. Branch lines to/from the Norfolk, Columbus, Lincoln, and Grand Island areas are included. Eventual extension of the north/south line going as far as Kansas City. Obviously such an effort will take many years and lots of dollars, but results of studies indicate that in the long run, the cost of building and maintaining a rail line such as this would actually be less that what would be required to upgrade and maintain existing highways and the Interstate system to keep up with the increase in population and traffic in the proposed service areas. The way the wheels of progress seem to grind slowly along, I may not be around to see the finished product if it comes to fruition, but it's certainly going to be an interesting topic to follow.
Not that familiar with Nebraska (been thru there once), I can not believe a commuter service would be waranted. Hey, its not the northeast or California or even down here in Florida. We here in Florida voted two years ago for High Speed electric trains, willing to pay extra taxes even. So far our republican governor and state senate/congress has not even done studies on routes. Why put someting on the ballot that the government has no intention of ever doing.Rich
Actually, I disagree, I think this idea has merit. You don't really understand the area, much of the shopping and services in Nebraska are concentrated in Omaha and Lincoln. For the residents of Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney (about 100,000 total) this is a 2-3 hour drive. Air service is very limited out here, and only goes to Denver or Omaha. The interstate highway has become a domain of the long haul truckers, and requires very frequent maintainence. Shuttle bus service leaves a lot to be desired. This would facilitate a better air service in Omaha, and reduce the need to staff and maintain airports outstate. I would support it, nice idea! Bob
