F40 question – image 2

So far as I know, the only F40s still in active duty are the "cabbages" that are basically used for the nonpowered end of push-pull service. Somebody around here has pics or you can do a google search.Blake Harris

Coaster, the North San Diego County commuter line, has the 372. It has Amtrak colors but the nose has been repainted to Coaster colors. It's been there for three years now.

RE: F40 question

Okay I got all the answers for all of you of the (displaced) Amtrak F40PH
(I'm not racking my brain for numbers)Coaster has one of themAMT Montreal has zero because they were returned when the F59PHI's started showing up. Their role was only to pinch hit and augment FP7A's. They also leased VIA Rail F40's as well but they held down the Blainville line and had the Canadian flag removed. It shows that on the Blainville line separtist parties live along it. Acadian has 3 I think and I saw one here where I live. Tri-Rail purchased 2 of themThe Isthmus (Panama Canal Railroad) has 5 of them along with 8 ex Clocker coaches. They are used in passenger and freight services. CSX has 2 of them repainted for their business trainVIA Rail Canada still has all of theirs but their P42's are more likely to be seen in the Windsor-Quebec City Corridor. The Canadian-American Railroad has 15 of them, 7 with modified front ends.Over the course of 24 years, 30 have been scrapped, the AC trolley #202 is in Colorado, and I think 30 have been converted to cab control cars. The last role for the F40PH was the Maple Leaf train because VIA Rail Canada had not yet recieved it's P42 locomotives from GE and were not qualified so the F40 came into bat for that.

>that. Wrong, wrong, and wrong. The 4 I mentionned above are now in Montréal getting their refurbs done. They came through Toronto last week. It is true that they had others several years ago (no numbers), but those were returned long ago. I don't know if these are still owned by Amtrak, or recently sold.VIA has lost either 3 or 4 of theirs, all from the first order, IIRC.The Maple Leaf recieved P42's a couple of months before VIA recieved their order. In fact, an Amtrak P42 was shipped to Toronto ahead of time to help get the maintenance guys aquainted with them before VIA's showed up.Dan

RE: F40 question

Check the number. If it is 90---, then it is a cab control car or NCPU. If it has a baggage door, then it is a NCPU. These do not count as F40s.

F40 question – image 21

No, I don't think they do. The only thing in Texas that would have the remotest(is that a word?) possibility of having F40PH's is the Heartland Flyer, and I'm 90% sure they've gone to P42's there.Bradley Linda

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-02 AT 09:38 AM (EST)

I don't visit Toronto that often, but I was born and raised there, and did some work for CP Rail. (I live in the US right now, 2 1/2 hours from Cornwall and 1 1/2 from montreal) I know the Amtrak one was shipped to Toronto. I saw that one on a trip to visit my sister. They also tested F59PHI's and P42's. I liked the F59PHI, not the P42. Can't see a dime's worth of shi* out the window, I've operated one before and it's crap. I kept on swearing about it. If you have tunnel vision it's for you. If you love driving minus the left hand mirror it's for you. If you LOVE the brakes sliding on the thing and non-accurate readouts, then guess what IT'S FOR YOU. The P42 is absoultely the worst damn thing out there. The only thing I like about them are the seats and that's it. Everything else I don't like. For one thing they could've used analog brake readouts on the damn thing not the digital ones. I read that engineers like analog readouts and I agree. the computerized ones are for freight locomoitves. I guess it was cheaper for VIA to get P42's because the Transportation Minister (who my dad loves to hate and also attended the same high school I went to albeit a different lifetime), had a brain (unlike everyone else in Parliament) and thought it would be cheaper to tack on that order alongside Amtracs. Personally I wanted them to get the F59PHI's, but with the Nightstar coaches the thing looks like it belongs on a model railroad than on the mainline. The P42 would be better if they didn't have the sloped windshield. For all intents and purposes the P42 can bite me. My apologies to anyone who is offended but it's the truth.

I might as well tag this onto the order sheet. I was there when CP Rail towed the first 2 production F59PHI's out of the London Plant. (my sister holds the pictures from that episode) I was also there with my dad when they shipped out GO Transit's F59PH's and Southern Pacific's GP60's. I was also there when the first SD70MAC left the plant. I was also there to see some of Union Pacific's new SD70M's be shipped from London to Chicago to get their first miles in. I was also there when CP Rail recieved it's first SD90MAC (the convertible model), because I drank a Mountain Dew in the cab when it was being towed to Toronto, alond with my ex-girlfriend eating Pizza hut (with my father driving) I also attended GMD's 50th Anniversary riding in an F59PH and riding behind me CP Rail's new true SD90MAC-H. The H engine is good, but then I don't like it because there is only so much you can do with a 6000hp locomotive. if you've ever wondered how they get that stuff out to be shipped, they leave it out in the yard which is not far from CP Rail's Quebec St. Yard. Either the work orders will say pick it up and tow it, or you're told to do it via dispatcher. They are shipped dead-in-tow though unless you have to put it online because the train won't move up a hill. Or in the case of the F59PHI's you go in to get them. My sister has all the photos from those experiences and trust me that's something you will treasure. She has held onto them for meAs with the P42 saga. Ask any engineer that has driven them and they will tell you they suck. you can't get them stopped in front of the depo. It's that bad.

RE: F40 question

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-02 AT 03:55 PM (EST)

You know that's amazing that both of you with (emotional?)ties to EMD think the Genesis series suck....
And I especially liked the part about engineers hating them....
In fact in several conversations I've had with Amtrak runners and lurking on many of the boards frequented by Amtrak personnel I've gotten quite the opposite impression....
Most of them told me they preferred the Gennies to the F40s at the end (those that have any hearing left).....
The local guys who run the leased Sounder F59PHIs here in Northern Va. have been some what critical of them (the F59s) and say they compare poorly to the MK RP40s and RP39s used in commuter service around here... Supposedly they(the F59s) are not very reliable.... Friends that work for the LIRR have basically voiced the same opinion about the DE30s and DM30s... And the FL9, while a beautiful engine especially in McGuiness' Red-Black-White, were notoriously unreliable and prone to fires.....
Goes to show you that diversity of opinion makes things interesting....
My guess would be that Railfans hate the GEs because they sound like a John Deere eating a Learjet..... But guess what the new GM H Series prime movers are 4 cycle too and they sound an awful lot like a GE to me.... LOL!
In commuter service the GEs being "slow to load" makes train crews prefer the GMs and MKs.... The problem is that the "slow to load" phenomina is caused by computer settings required for Tier XX (??)emissions controls which none of the two cycle GMs can meet.... And I have heard annecdotal evidence that the H series is much slower to load just like the GEs probably for the same reason.....

RE: F40 question

Mr. Bottle washer:Could you at least wash the windshield too? lol. Anyways I have nothing against GE's it's that I like the freight models rather then the passenger ones. The F40 I have nothing against, and if GE could only improve the design of the P42 I'd like them too. Variety is the spice of life, yes we all have heard that but being born and raised in Toronto, I have seen nothing but GM and MLW products. GE's were very rare, confined to Western Canada and the Rockies until 1998 then I started seeing things. Even then I did not like the Alco's and love the GM's. Maybe I might be biased since London was 2 1/2 hours away from my house when I lived in Toronto. Anyone will tell you that they like the F40. Anyone will tell you that the love the GP38-2 and SD40-2 (I know I do), but since reading your post sir, I have to say that only some like the P42's but ask the older people. I like the 16-7FDL though. It's got that choo choo sound that mimicks a steam locomotive. Personally if I had a choice on what to run, I'd probably choose the P42 if it can overcome all it's faults. You might want ot ask the engineers on Amtrak if they can see out the left hand mirror and if they can carry everything abord without going down multiple times. I sure as hell can't, and neither could my father, even he hates them. Yes I do have emotional ties to GMD, because I saw everything they have built at one time or another but I hold no gruge against GE. I like both actually, but am now starting to recently turn towards GE rather than GM.The Tier XX thing I can relate to
