Aug-06-01, 06:02 AM (EST) "Found a VERY strange-looking picture of this Mogul-type engine..." I found a strange-looking picture of this Mogul-type steam-locomotive-built in 1899- in the "World encyclopedia of locomotives"-book (Colin Garrat):
It's taken at night, and there's coming something that looks like lava, out of the steampipe. Being a person that doesn't know next to nothing about steam-engines, would someone know how to explain this? It just doesn't look like it's steam, whatever camera they used...strange. Is it actually WATER that was captured by infralense(or something like that)? The strange thing is, there's also - I suggest - some steam coming out of a whistle, that is NOT red! I really wonder... So, I'll suggest that what you are seeing is in fact steam. Photographs taken in the early 1900's were shot on very slow film, often by simply removing the lens cap for maybe a half a minute, then covering the lens again to stop the exposure. Anything that moved during that half minute might take on a ghostly look. Even today if you take a photo at night, you might make a "time exposure", locking the camera's shutter open for (in my case) 20 minutes. This would allow you to take a flash attachment and walk around the subject, firing off open strobe flashes, until you've lit up your subject. Anything that moved during that 20 minutes would take on a blurred effect, including the movement of the Earth, which would streak the sky with "star trails".Message Areas - "Found a VERY strange-looking picture of this Mogul-type engine..." – image 1CB&Q O1a #4960 at Madison, WI on 6/30/66 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-13-01, 03:54 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Found a VERY strange-looking picture of this Mogul-type engine..." thanks. I think it was probably a case of "red-eyes"-effect on the film. The locomotive was photographed somewhere in brazil, and probably a few decades ago. so the film wasn't like the modern films nowadays, which don't have so much color-problems. the steam was therefore colored red, instead of white or gray as in real life. It surely looks funny and odd to see red steam coming out of there! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
