Actually, this isn't too bad of an idea for a poll..If the title was 'Which train simulator is better' instead of 'Which do you like better'; I'm sure there would be a major conflict..

First off, you would have to pick neutral ground to do a poll like this. Of course MSTS is going to win, this is an MSTS forum. The reverse would be true if it was held in the Trainz forum. There was also no selection for those of us who use both Trainz and MSTS.Some of you have stated that you tried Trainz "a long time ago" and thought it was too toy like. Agreed. Now you need to download the new UTC demo and try again because unlike MSTS, Trainz has been growing and improving in leaps and bounds over the last year. If you base your opinion on the old demo it would be like judging Ford based on the Model T, judging Quake III based on the original Doom, etc.I would have to say that a LARGE percentage of Trainz users migrated over from MSTS so we have a hands on, long time comparison of both sims. It seems that 90% of the Trainz bashers have either just tried the old demo, have never tried Trainz at all and are basing it on early screenshots or are just plain trolling. They are BOTH good sims. It is a shame that, God forbid, someone comes over here and say, "Hey, just wanted to let you guys know about this great new feature that has been added to Trainz". He usually gets bashed and flamed to death. Why the moderators allow this I have no idea. Now granted, an MSTS user can't go the the Trainz forum ans say the same thing because there haven't been any "great new features" added to MSTS yet. This is not the fault of Trainz users, go take your frustrations out on Microsoft. Anyway MSTS visitor are rarely bashed when they visit the Trainz forum unless they come in in bashing mode themselves. Their creative comments are always welcome and if MSTS gets some really great new features, we WANT to hear about it.One of that MAIN reasons that I spend most of my time with Trainz now is because of support not because one sim is any better than the other. How many times has the Director and COO of MSTS posted in both this forum and the Trainz forum?Anyway, I just hope we can get to the point when the bickering stops and we can all cooperate towards improving both sims. Especially since ALL that content out there can be easily made compatable with both sims should the authors choose to do so.Peace to all and Happy Holidays! Paul Doty

Trainz The next level UP

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-02 AT 10:43 AM (EST)

You must not have tried Trainz yet.
Unless you like to be told how things must be. I like a programe where I can make my own layout of any where in the world. I can even make one that you could never find in the real world. Scenery that can be custom made by people from all over the world. I don't think you could ask for any thing better.
MSTS was a good start but Trainz has taken it to the next level.

Not too familiar with Trainz and Trainmaster, but in regards to the other 2 (MSTS and YardDuty), IMHO, it depends on your interest.MSTS is more geared to modeling, with it's very nice graphics, while YardDuty is more geared to operations, with it's national freight system, and unlimited possibilities for creating and sorting whole trains of cars(up to 100 car trains at present), forwarding them to actual industries, unloading them, and sending them back to start all over again. I prefer the operations, so YardDuty gets my vote. No put down of MSTS (or Trainz or Trainmaster), just the part of railroading that interests me more.btw, YD is newer, so some of you might not be familiar with it. I invite you to take a look. http://groups.msn.com/YardDuty/Paul Metzger

14000 polygon locomotives and 2000 polygon freight cars.. all freeware and easy to skin. top notch online community, graphics and sound that cant be beat, 3d cabs with multiple panning locations, multiple cab support for dual end locomotives, all engines run at same notch.. unlike 1 in notch 8 and the rest idling!! Smoke that actually looks like smoke, the list goes on! what do you have to loose... is it illegal to own both sims..? I play both.. one a lot more than the other

RE: MSTS Rules!

Nice loco!!I'm not against people voting, but I'm wondering what we'll learn from this poll? That there are more MSTS users than Trainz? That more MSTS fans come to this web site? The vote should really be limited to those that have played both sims anyway, so that a valid vote can be made. What I think would be a lot more useful would be if people posted why they voted the way they did - what they liked about each sim and what they disliked (without slagging the other sim). Over the past year we have made some enormous changes to Trainz based on user feedback. It is now a lot more realistic (with prototypical routes of over 100miles appearing) and we have introduced scenarios to give players feedback from their driving. Anyway, just an idea. If we can get this type of feedback and still be friends, the world of train sims will be better for it.CheersTony Hilliam
Auran Director and COOP.S. I think owners of the company that made the game should get 100 votes, so if Bill turns up here, MSTS will get 100 votes too

RE: MSTS Rules!

I like both, but Trainz is more to my likings for a few reasons...It's a bit easier to work with at times, I like the cab views better, although at times I wanted a cabview like what MSTS has. They both have a different look and feel, which I like both, there is something about the MSTS look and feel though... it seems somewhat cruddy, but still there is something there that is nice about it that I like.Although in the end Trainz is more to my liking, besides that it has a really nice looking sandtower in it :p

RE: MSTS Rules!

Very nice reply, Tony.In recognition of your post, I will state that I own both MSTS and Trainz. Currently, MSTS is my favorite. I bought Trainz quite some time ago and had it installed for a little while. However, it didn't strike my fancy out of the box ... I just didn't find it as realistic overall as MSTS. In all fairness though, I was never able to find time to invest into learning it fully and before I found the time Tim Kent peaked my interest in Ghost Recon. After purchasing Ghost, I had to remove some stuff from my already full hard drives and that included the unused Trainz. NOW, I just picked up another hard drive for my machine tonight (80 gig ... brings my total to 160 gigs ) so as soon as I am able to install it (hopefully Sunday ... I gotta add an ATA expansion card also) I will be reinstalling Trainz, updating it and hopefully over the winter I can give it a thourough try ... IF I can ever get my machine to stop running Ghost Recon (darn you Tim).Ray

MSTS is certainly not a bad sim, but I prefer Trainz. The reasons are as follows:The cabviews beats MSTS quite a bunch. True 3d, view from multiple positions and dual cab for the appropriate locos.Better train physics when put in realistic mode.Better graphics, esp. custom content (this is subjective).Better sound, more lifelike train noise.Working turntables.Ability to just put down a number of consists and drive without having to make consist and activity files.Route building is easy, but not more limited than MSTs.Each route doesn't need to have it's own copy of each scenery item.Scenarios have more possibilities than MSTS activities (but are harder to create).Ease of installation of custom content. Standardized installation utility.Great community.
