I love to listen to old classic rock stuff in general but especially while playing MSTS.
I find it easy and relaxing Music to listen to while watching that 100 car freight train slowly creep over Marias Pass.
I took all my favourite songs and put them together as an Internet Radio Broadcast a while ago.
So maybe some of you check it out and enjoy it as much as I do.

Ahhhhhh....Dream Theater. Highly underrated. When other guitarists are literally taking a couple strings off there guitars because they don/t use them Petrucci is using a seven string.Way big talent.

I am a Petrucci Fan big time. Although I play Synth / Guitar in our band, I am only the rhythm guitarist. Our lead guy cant play Petrrucci either.............I have the John Petrucci instructional video, and although I can't play 90% if what on there, the technics and exersises have shot my keyboard solo capability through the roof !!Watch out Jordan Rudess ....... I will be Dream Theater keyboardist # 4.Oh well back to watching " Spinal Tap the Movie "Our amps go to eleven !!LaterTim Kent

What? No jazz? What about blues or bluegrass ? For those of you that might have watched a program on PBS called "The WoodWright's Shop"(if memory still functions), the opening with the host walking down a stretch of track, has music played on banjo and fiddle by the late great John Hartford, and Bob Carlin. The track is "Big John McNeil"found on the LP/CD titled "The fun of open conversation" Rounder Records 1995. Works for me when I'm in steam mode. Keeps the Gandy dancers happy too!

Woohoo! Yes! Someone who likes Bluegrass I often listen to that stuff Mostly MIDI cuz they don't interfear with the train sounds The one and ONLY rule: driving The General or John Fowlis Mogul or 10wheeler, then you MUST listen to bluegrass When driving Mikados and Berks or other heavy steam locos I usaly listen to heavy blues. (PS. My entire MSTS roster is steam... And mebbe one or two diesels ) Keep on steamin'

Oh, I don't know, Rush has done pretty well fo a group of guys who had no real music education. On the other hand if you or I had spent 3 or 4 years at the Berkley School of Music, I dare say we might be in the same position as Mike Portnoy and Co.

Agreed,Maybe I'll head off to Berkley for 4 years to see what that does for the keyboard / guitar playing !!Chuck !!If you were listening to files on the Dream Theater website, I hope that it was NOT the MIDI files you were listening to, cause those are NOT Dream Theaters doing !!That is some-one at home recording their songs on a MIDI compatible device for others to listen to....( For the most part MIDI sounds like cheap karaoke !! )If it was actually Dream Theater tracks then "Yes" all of your comments still apply !!LaterTim Kent

Metallica- Anything else before 1990
Led Zeppelin- Kashmir and Stairway to Heaven
Pink Floyd- Anything that is live (Esp. Wish You Were Here)
Megadeth- Symphony of Destruction or Peace Sells
Van Halen- Anything from either era (Hagar or Roth)
Black Sabbath- Iron Man
Stone Temple Pilots- Anything
Nirvana- AnythingI don't like almost anything before 1974
Most of what they play today is bad
Dream Theater is awesome
For modern, it is usually local bands demos and other recordings (Boston area)

I enjoy a good mix Doors, Pink Floyd, Yardbirds, et al, but also some Counting Crows, Smash Mouth (before they got stupid), and Disturbed. Then there are movie soundtraks...the depression-era music from "Oh, Brother! Where Art Thou?" is a keeper. Kind of a strange mix. Cheers!

RE: Good Classic Rock for your Driving Pleasure

Some pretty good selections indeed! However, I find it hard to beleive with all the guitar players in this group(yep, me too!) not one mention of either Eric Johnson(Texas blues meets jazz-fusion and then goes to Mars) or, Joe Satriani. You Mettallica fans may know him as your hero's (Kirk Hammet)'s tutor. Much of what he does is in a very classic rock vein (with a groove that won't quit). Check out Ice 9 for a sinister hard rock groove or, maybe Summer Song for a feel good rocker (I played lead on that one to consistent accolades in my band). How's this for classic rock?
