A Union Pacific Train crashed into a Tractor trailer today, the train was not derailed but it did dragged the tractor trailer along the tracks until it stopped. Thats all I know I dunno if the tractor trailer was trying to beat the train or that it got stuck on the track

It's usually not the manual-transmission car that stalls out, it's the driver's brain that stalls out.It makes sense if you think about it. If you worry about popping the clutch and stalling on the tracks, you greatly increase your chances of doing just that. Since you worry about it, you end up doing it because it's on your mind.I have a great example of this. When I used to play baseball, I'd catch every fly-ball that came to the outfield without even thinking about it; it was just second-nature. Until one day, someone hit one out to me, and I actually thought "what if I drop this one" and sure enough, I dropped it.That's just my theory. There's nothing in or on the tracks that would make a car stall.John G

RE: UP Train crash!

When a train hits a tractor trailer why does it drag it down the tracks, unlike a car?I've heard on railroad accident videos on TV at crossings that cars just stall out on the crossings.Do dispatchers know exactly where to pinpoint a train if you call in and report a stuck car on a crossing? If your car is stuck on the crossing and you have no way to call anyone can you stand down the tracks a good way and wave a stop signal somehow to oncoming trains? How can a route for a dispatcher be covered by a few PC screens?Adam-------------------------------Wishing you and your relatives, family, and friends to have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

If your car is stuck on the crossing and you have no way to call anyone can you stand down the tracks a good way and wave a stop signal somehow to oncoming trains? No that would never work, because most trains are pulling oh around 500 or so tons of freight and it takes them a long time to stop, oh about 1-5 miles. Beside most train engineer might think that you are just waving to them. So to answear your question no.

RE: UP Train crash!

Adam
In regards to being stuck on the tracks if no train is in sight, one can attempt to push the car clear if a train is approaching to hell with the car a person can't be replaced, the car can.
I did see a car literaly get stuck on the tracks(not the crossing but on the tracks) back in 78/79 the Chicago area got dumped on by snow storm after snow storm it finaly got to the point where the C&NW pulled in some Russell plows from Wisconsin & Iowa to clear trackage in the area, I worked at a gas station near the tracks we had one crossing right near us with an intersection about 60' on the other side of the tracks with the tracks running at an angle, anyway due to the plows working the 3 track main and the high snow some woman(not from the area obviously) thought it was a street turned on to the tracks(under a signal bridge mind you)and nearly made it to the other street before her car broke through the hard packed snow and got stuck.
We called the local police and as a freight train from Janesville WI usualy rolled through about 9 the cops had red fusees set out up and down the track either side of the car, luckily for the woman either the train was running late or the dispatcher got him stopped well west of town.

RE: UP Train crash!

Actually, we had that happen a year ago on the tourist railroad I work on. We got about 1 to 2 feet of snow in the canyon over a period of a few days, then our crew took the wedge plow down the line to clear the tracks for weekend operations. Some silly lady in a van thought it was a road that had been plowed, turned down the tracks and I think she got stuck. Fortunately there was no oncoming train right when she did it, but it did cause a bit of a dealy, if I remember right.- dispatcher618

well letsee, if a train hit the trailer straight on then that trailer would probebly find itself wrapped around the front of the train. cars are a bit too small to be dragged (not sayin they cant be) usually when a train hits a car, it slams it out of the way.My new e-mail is Arcanine241@yahoo.comUP Train crash! – image 32

Yes it does. And since its bigger and longer than normal cars, it takes more with it, like poles, small trees, and whatever garbage that was lying in the line of fire. It all depends though on the durability of the tractor-trailer and the type of train.

<Was just wondering why does everyone say manual transmission cars tend to stall out when crossing railroad crossings?>This is exactly what happened in Castle Rock, CO about a week ago. A high school student's car stalled near the tracks. Her boyfriend following behind her in his truck, then tried to ram her out of the way of an oncoming train with his truck, but ended up pushing her right in the way of the Union Pacific train. Thankfully, she survived but may lose vision in one of her eyes.Jordan L.

being nervous, so you get sloppy with the clutch and end up dumping it( get off of it before the engine can crank enough RPM's) and the vehical stalls, as for semi's being dragged and cars not, that's because a truck and 53' trailer gives alot of surface area to push, where as the car would just get tossed to the side

When driving a tractor trailer it is illegal to shift while going across a railway crossing. I know because I am a driver by trade. The thing is sometime. I shift because I dont even think about it. I find that a lot of other drivers do so too.

Once you high-center a vehicle, you're stuck. I've hi-centered my toyota truck a time or two off-roading, and you can't go forward or backward. Also, somebody mentioned earlier that a train weighs 500 tons. That's just a bit low. A dash-9 locomotive by itself weighs 200 tons. Many freight cars are rated at 100+ tons each. Most typical mainline freights weigh anywhere from a couple thousand tons to over ten thousand tons.John G.

If you own a manual car and you dump out the clutch too fast, you still have time to restart your car. Sometimes if your lucky you'll have your foot on the throttle and drop the clutch accidentaly. At least it wont stall. Maybe burn out. It could be from when the car hits the crossing section that the shock from it gets to the transmission or the clutch. ~Anyways~ My point is I was at a Conrail crossing ( this was back in 99 or 2000 cant remember )b4 and there was a train 15 feet from the car and I think they stalled as they tried to outrun it. Trying to outrun at 15 feet is crazy. They fired up the engine and I thought they was going to pull a wheelie. I am thinking there should be a law prohibiting the act of trying to outrun a train while the warning lights are on. Maybe some lives would be saved that way. But maybe not. You never know.

Being a log truck driver, i wont say its illegal to shift going over rr tracks, but its certainly not good. Can make it slip gear or jump link, and then we have problems. But its not good to get t-boned in a 18 wheeler.

I used to have something about that. It was a joke about killing the dumb people to raise the overall IQ of the population. It was worded, however, so that the dumb people didn't get it. I showed it to everyone in my 8th grade class two years ago, and all of my teachers. Sure enough, only the teachers and myself got it (note: I was easily the smartest in my grade level at that school). As one of my friends who moved to Colorado last year said, government has two purposes, to give fat cats easy jobs, and for dumb people, such as grade crossing racers, who need its laws to protect them from themselves.

RE: UP Train crash!

HI All;Several years ago (about 40), during the mid 1960's, I stalled an empty Transit Bus on a Double Track Mainline crossing in Mineola, Long Island, NY.
It was late on a Saturday night, and I had just left the formerly famous Roosevelt Raceway in Westbury, with a load of passengers heading to NYC on the Long Island RR. The trains waited at Mineola Station for our buses to arrive.
I dropped my passengers on the southside of the station, and they had to cross over to the Northside platform via the Mineola Blvd bridge.
As I left the station, I noticed the automatic transmission was slipping and took longer to shift into direct (gear) drive.
My deadhead route back to the bus depot paralleled the RR tracks for about 3/4 of a mile, then turned right over the tracks at grade.
I made the required stop, at the crossing, then proceeded across. As I stepped on the accelerator, the bus began to move slowly over a slight rise, then as it straddled the tracks, it died.
With the pedal to the floor, the engine was working against the governor, and the slipping tranny, and refused to budge.
Other motorists and bus drivers were yelling at me to get the H out of the bus. With no flares handy, all I could think of was flashing the interior lights on and off as the Train I unloaded my passengers to began to approach.
I finally jumped out, and luckily for me and my employer, the Motorman of the MP54 Electric train saw me stopped on the crossing, realized something was wrong, and proceeded to the crossing at less than 10 mph.
Once the train was stopped, the bus driver behind me pushed me off the crossing and off to the side to await the tow truck.
If not for the fact the train was still stopped at the station, instead of moving at 60 mph, I would have bailed, and Mr Schenck's Bus would have been history!!Daniel Marra
