Aug-03-01, 09:48 PM (EST) "Dissappointing locomotives" It just looks I'm NOT going to get over my RR Tycoon2 addiction, not atleast with the release of microsoft's train sim.WHERE ARE THE ENGINES? Only 9 of them? This was a terrible dissappointment to me - even the 2D RR tycoon2 has dozens of different engines; steam, diesels, electric, from different styles, different decades. As for now, this sim is a dead duck unless some serious fans out there with the talent, can add new engines to this game. And fast. (it looks like my wish is to become true, but I only believe when I see it)Speaking of the great RRT2 game, I was also dissappointed of the campaigns this game has to offer: after you have finished the short and fiew campaigns, there's not much to do in this game, except ride and watch the scenery. When I read the game-developers site it said the sim would offer "lots of work on the yards with cargo etc." Well, I just can't see it there. A couple of short working-schedules, that's about it. The lack of a Business-motive, in a way of managing your own railroad company and your trains and locos, is the prime reason this game doesn't come even close to what RRT2 is. I just think that the yard-switching and scenery-admiring aren't really that interesting. After reading the "locomotives"-section of this site, I'm reaffirmed of my opinion, that the main attraction of this game SHOULD have been the engines, not the sim with the nice scenery. The enthusiasm with locomotives is just clearly very absent in this game. Oh, I just WISH someone would bundle up RRT2 and this game, and I WOULD LOVE IT! I really would, and I'm dead sure I'm not alone. It would be without ANY doubt a major HIT. Please? a hint for microsoft team: release a "new engines package, new routes & campaigns"-cd for this christmas. Because if you don't, people are going to forget all about this game, and it won't become a classic like the notorious flight sim. That said, I'm anyway clad that someone took the time and effort to develop this genre just a bit. I admit the scenes are beautifull, especially the mountains and valleys. What's great, it all looks nice even with an average-powered computer, so that's something plus. Aug-03-01, 09:58 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Dissappointing locomotives" Yeah but when you consider how HORRIBLY unrealistic rrt2 is... And I know alot about locos and like them but I am not a loco buff- I like to see the whole train, and like the operations and track layout. I cannot stand 6 car trains as in rrt2!!! If it were actually realistic any engine in the game could pull that many cars at a decent speed! and there are no YARDS, and frieght trains stop at stations. plus a mile is like 50 miles in the game. And Id rather have the 9 good looking realistic 3-D enignes than tiny unrealistic engines. Santa Fe never had sivler and red warbonett painted SDP40s. Of all the enignes to pick! they pick an SDP40 which there were less than 30 of compared to the 3000+ sd-40-2s!!! And all the cars are from different eras making trains look really odd, plus you only have one distant view of them. And worst of all, when the "pass" they go through each other!!!! that sounds like a glitch!! this is just the opinion of someone who likes to see 253 car empty NS hopper trains with 2 engines on the Ohio flatlands and long manifests labouring up Sand Patch grade rather than going on a trip to see a GP40 sitting there. Aug-04-01, 09:22 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Dissappointing locomotives" You are exactly right about those unrealistic points in RRT2. Those 6-car-trains are ridiculous, I know! I quess it's all down to the fact, what a gamer prefers more: realistic graphics, or game-play. As a BUSINESS-STRATEGY-game RRT2 beats 'em all, in my opinion.
I just checked yesterday-evening this game named "rails across america" - tried the demo and was dissappointed. It proved to be something like a RRT1 with better graphics, nothing more. Even RRT2 has better realism then that game, also it was strangely slow, so...
I'we given a look at times to that "trainz"-project, I hope it gives something out soon. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-06-01, 06:50 AM (EST) 4. "Taking back some things I said" After checking the downloads-area for MSTS, I just have to take back what I said about this game being a "dead duck". It's not that I'm a complete jerk, I just didn't know what this "third party development" really meant. I was really astounded by the cheer amount of work and sophistication these designers put into their work, and all this on their freetime! (atleast not a full-time job, though it probably IS time-consuming! -Well, artists rarely count how much time they use for a particular work, so...

Aug-05-01, 02:23 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Dissappointing locomotives" MSTS VS Railroad Tycoon 2?????
I loved railroad tycoon 2 (just ask my wife) but I also love MSTS (again ask my wife..... ) Railroad Tycoon 2 was good as far as building an empire goes, but MSTS give me a chance to drive those trains, something Railroad Tycoon 2 did not. While I would love to see a game that can do both, with today's tech I don't believe it's possible so I'd have to say both games are great for different reasons. Cheers,
James.P.S. If TOPPOP want's to top MSTS they better find a way for train driver to drive in the game, and they better find a way to make the consits more than 8 cars long. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-06-01, 07:12 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Dissappointing locomotives" Well, you are right about that: RRT2 is NOT a simulator, and probably the things are gonna stay that way. But, on the other hand, RRT2 has been made for sony playstation2, and what I know, was received well in that market-gap. RRT2 also runs under linux. So it's truly a classic of it's time. Now, considering what a financial success RRT2 has been to TOPPOP, and also the fact how much graphics have developed since that game was made, I wouldn't think it as "impossible" if TOPPOP pulled together a new, enhanced version of RRT2 with smoother graphics (like the locos and cars turning smoothly in all directions and not in the eight directions as in the old one( which looks REALLY stupid, don't you agree?), also more realistic downhills and uphills-running would be nice. The zooming could be closer (at present, you hardly can see the details of the locos or cars, they are too small) and cars could be more accurate to the decade. It's not much to be asked, and as a fulltime-RRT2 gamer (I know I can run a two-digit number revenue-company in RRT2 better then my own household ...I'm waiting and I'm waiting and not giving up hope. By the way, what I remember reading, the TRAINZ-game HAS somekind of "run your own railway-company"-campaign builded to it. I'm not too sure about it though. Anyway that would be nice - I like much more the idea of running a WHOLE FLEET of trains, instead of driving just one all by myself. As things are now, MSTS fills the gap as an ok-trainsimulator. "RE: Dissappointing locomotives" rrtycoon,You do know that RRT2 is going to be re-released later this month as a platinum edition featuring RRT2, the 2nd century campaigns, plus several more new campaigns? Aug-13-01, 03:47 AM (EST) 10. "GREAT!" Yea, I know NOW! Just read about it yesterday at poptop's home-site. Really great, since I only have the RRT2, and not the Second century.
What just bucks me, is that according to what poptop has told by now about the package, the train-modeling isn't improved at all. Hell, it should. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-08-01, 12:39 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Dissappointing locomotives" I agree that this sim lacks the business motivation and personalities of the Robber Barons to offer a real life economic challenge....that program is still a classic. This has different advantages particularly for a former HO and N scale modeler like myself. In effect giving us the opportunity to be in the cab and running the locomotive. Hopefully a better Route Editor will be forthcoming. I have read some of the posts on this site about the horrors people have experienced trying to design their own routes and I'll simply enjoy what I have for now and wait for better things to come.

Aug-11-01, 10:40 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Dissappointing locomotives" Well something that could answer all of your wants is Transport Tycoon 3D.
I don't know too much about it but from what I've seen it will allow you to drive the locomotives (or at least travel in the them!) as well as handle the business side of things. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
