Jul-31-01, 02:24 PM (EST) "Oh well" Thanks for the advice guys, but unfortunately, I just purchased my "Volkswagen" about a month ago brand new. I guess I'm pretty much out of luck for the moment. According to Microsoft, I have enough of everything to run Train Simulator, but apparently that's not true. It's not usable the way it runs now. Oh well. Guess I should upgrade one of these days. Aug-01-01, 01:12 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Oh well" Don't give up the ship, even if it's really a train. According to the box, the minimum specs are 32mb ram, 266P2 class, 4mb video. I find it hard to believe you actually have a new computer with a 5MB video card. I didn't know they made them that small anymore. My son has an AMD K6-2 450, 64mb ram, and a Voodoo3-2000 PCI card with 16mb of video ram, and that's an old card. I found that some routes are jerkier than others, but with the visibility slider turned down halfway and the texture quality set to 1 it runs at a pretty good framerate on his. Try saving an activity in a particularly scenery-heavy location, then exit, play with the advanced display options, and reload the saved game so you can see what each setting does. Hitting Shift-Z in the sim will give you an FPS display in the lower right corner. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-01-01, 02:33 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Oh well" Thanks for the advice! I could be wrong about the size of my video card. I thought that's what it was , but I could be wrong. Anyway, I sure appreciate the tips!! I'm definitely going to try them. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-01-01, 04:29 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Oh well" Geez, I'm running a 400 mhz PII and 256k ram with onboard graphics and sound cards (they use system ram) and I consistently get 17 fps on everthing I've tried so far. Unless I change to any of the exterior views and then I get a bad stutter for a couple of seconds. I've only been doing the Marias Pass activities so that may make a difference. If I remember right, the sliders are all either maxed or one notch below max. I would guess that you need to download the newest drivers for your video card and then set you resolution FOR JUST THE SIM to 960x720 or maybe even 800x600. I know you need higher rez for the editors, but you can run the sim itself at lower. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-01-01, 07:06 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Oh well" Know what you mean, that stutter problem was addressed heavily on another thread. What I use for my benchmark is Marias Pass explore route starting from whitefish heading toward columbia falls, then I save the activity just past the first curve. With the detail all the way up there is a pickup truck parked off to the left, and a stutter point just short of it. On less heavily detailed routes the stutter is noticable, but happens quickly enough that the FPS counter doesn't change. My system is an AMD T-bird 800 on an ASUS A7V mobo, 384mb ram, Annihilator 2 64mb AGP. At that spot I get 48 FPS suddenly dropping to 23. Again, the actual framerate is not as important as consistancy - 15 FPS will look smooth if it stays at that rate and doesn't change, whereas 60 FPS dropping suddenly to 40 FPS, altho an average of 50, it still looks jerky. This actually has more to do with the way the game engine caches the memory than anything to do with video cards. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
